10 TIPS ON HOW TO SURVIVE COLLEGE
1. SEEK A BALANCE - The social and academic aspects of college life are intertwined.
Don't sway the scales too far in one direction or the other. "Study hard so she could play
hard," used to be one of my favorite former students' mottos.
2. GET ORGANIZED - Teachers in high school tended to walk you through all of your
homework and due dates. Professors post homework at college, typically for the whole
semester, and expect you to be ready. Purchase an organizer, utilize an app, or acquire a
large wall calendar to keep track of when assignments are due.
3. BECOME AN EXPERT ON COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND DUE DATES -
Professors spend countless hours creating course syllabi and calendars so that you know
exactly what is expected of you and when it is expected of you. "I didn't realize it was
due today," is one of the most pathetic excuses a student may make to a professor.
4. LEARN TO COPE WITH HOMESICKNESS - It's only natural that there will be
times when you miss your family, even if you were one of those kids who couldn't wait
to get away. Find a way to deal with those feelings, such as making a phone call or
sending some email home.
5. SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP WHEN YOU NEED IT - Health and counseling
services are available at most colleges. Please make use of the many resources these
offices provide students if they’re unwell, isolated, or sad. You don't have to deal with
these problems on your own.
6. DON’T CUT CORNERS - It's all about learning in college. You can still do well on
tests if you postpone and cram, but you will learn very little. Worse yet, avoid cheating
on term papers or tests.
7. STAY HEALTHY - Many of the issues that first-year students suffer may be traced
back to an illness that kept them out of class for an extended length of time, causing a
downward spiral. Make sure you get enough sleep, take your vitamins, and eat a healthy
diet.
8. MAKE CONNECTIONS WITH YOUR CLASSMATES – Having a connection with
your classmates is very fundamental in college life. It can be a crucial resource at times
when he had to miss a class. And classmates will be our companions in our college life.
9. MAKE TIME FOR YOU - Make sure you schedule some time and activities to help
you relax and unwind after a long day or week. Be kind to yourself, whether it's through
yoga, watching your favorite television shows, or writing in a journal.
10. STUDY THE HARD SUBJECT FIRST - When you're fresh, work on your most
difficult subjects. Putting them off till you're exhausted only makes matters worse.
