Normal Dist and CI

This document contains 9 practice questions on normal distribution and confidence intervals. It includes problems calculating percentiles, means, standard deviations, percentages of a population above or below a cutoff, and confidence intervals for proportions and population means. Sample sizes range from 15 to 400. Distributions described include heights, weights, reading speeds, lifetimes, and proportions of items with a given characteristic.

Practice Questions on Material Covered

Normal Distribution
Problem#1: The length of life for an automatic dishwasher is approximately normally
distributed, with a mean of 3.5 years and a standard deviation of 1 year. If this type of
dishwasher is guaranteed for 12 months, what fraction of the sales will require replacement?
(0.621%)
Problem#2: The time required by a nurse to inject a shot of penicillin has been observed to be
normally distributed, with a mean of 30 seconds and standard deviation of 10 seconds. Find the
90th percentile of this distribution. (Z = 1.28155 & X = 42.82)
Problem#3: An athlete finds that in a high jump he can clear a height of 1.68m once in five
attempts and height of 1.52m nine times out of ten attempts. Assuming the heights, he can clear
in various jumps form a normal distribution, estimate the mean and standard deviation of the
distribution. (mean= 1.62 & sigma=0.075)
Problem#4: The heights of applicants to the police force are normally distributed with mean
170cm and standard deviation of 3.8cm. If 25% of the applicant are rejected because they are too
small, what is the minimum acceptable height for the police force?
Problem#5: The average effective life of a certain type of membrane used in water purifier is 3
years with variance of 36 months. The environmental engineering firm replaces free all
membranes that don’t work while under guarantee. If the firm willing to replace only 4% of
membrane that fail, how long a guarantee should be offered. Assume that the lives of the
membranes follow normal probability distribution.
Problem#6: Hypothetical Scenario: Given the length ‘L’ of Indus dolphin (in breeding
sanctuary) normally distributed with L ~ N(5’3”, 5”), and that minimum length required for
release in River is 5’2”.
i) Find the percentage of fish who would be rejected to liberate on account of their size.
ii) What number of fish would be released in River provided the fish school comprises
10,000 such fish.

Confidence Interval:
Problem# 1: The state reading level for tenth graders is on average 150 words per minute with
a standard deviation of 15. A random sample size of 100 tenth graders at Lincoln High School
has average 157 words per minute. Estimate a 95% confidence interval for population mean,
does your CI contains population mean of 150 words per minute or not.
Problem#2: A U.S. dime is supposed to weight 2.268 grams. A random sample of 15
circulated dimes showed a mean weight of 2.256 grams with a SD of 0.026 grams. Estimate an
80% confidence interval for population mean weight.
Problem#3: In a report prepared by the Economic Research Department of a major bank the
Department manager maintains that the average annual family income on Metropolis is $48,432.
If a random sample of 400 families shows an average income of $48,574 with a standard
deviation of 2000; calculate a 90% confidence interval for population average family income?
Problem#4: The lifetime of a certain brand of heat pump is known to be normally distributed
with a standard deviation of 2. A sample of 6 heat pumps yielded the following observations
2.0, 1.3, 6.0, 1.9, 5.1, 4.0
Estimate a confidence interval of 99% for population mean lifetime of heat pumps.
Problem#5: In an independent random sample of 270 American trade magazine advertisements,
56 were humorous. And in an independent random sample of 203 British trade magazine
advertisement contained 52 humorous ads. Calculate 95% confidence intervals for population
proportion of humorous ads in American and British trade magazines?
Problem#6: A study showed 118 instances of breast cancer among 3,033 mothers who used
diethyl-stilbestrol (DES), an estrogen-like substance formerly used to prevent miscarriage.
Calculate 90% confidence interval for population proportion for women suffering breast cancer.
Problem#7: In a random sample of 500 men from Lahore city, 300 are found to be smokers.
And in one of 1000 men from Karachi city, 550 are smokers. Estimate an 80% confidence
interval for population proportion of smokers at Karachi and Lahore.
Problem#8: You plan to sell SHIRTs for NUST at H-12 campus, what information (DATA)
about this market is required and what type of MCTs you should employ.
Problem#9: The following set of data represent heights (inches) of PG female students
enrolled at MS programe.
60,60,65,62,63,58,59,60,61,62,67,68,60,59,63,62.
a) Calculate MEAN.
b) Is it true that mean calculated above represents average height of female students at
NUST Islamabad? Give your answer followed by brief discussion.
