For over 30 years in the picturesque rural town of Tommarp, Sweden, Michael Sanden and his
small team have been building the fine acoustics that have helped him solidify his reputation as one
of the most creative and innovative luthiers of his generation.

MASTER
DESIGN
We asked Michael to consider a collaboration with Tanglewood Guitars that would allow us to bring
his elegant designs and innovative craftsmanship to a larger market. The exquisite MasterDesign
instruments are the result of that collaboration. A range of guitars built to precise Sanden
blueprints and incorporating some of Michael’s most functional and stylistic handcrafted features,
these instruments take production guitars to a new level.

High-grade, solid Sitka spruce tops are paired with either solid rosewood or solid
mahogany backs and sides. The instruments feature Michael’s trademark “paintbrush stroke”
bridge, an unadorned headstock, a single stylized “T” inlay on the 12th fret of the fingerboard,
and a zero fret. Each model is equipped with a B-Band A1.2 under-saddle transducer and active
preamp, with a volume control tucked discreetly inside the soundhole. An SKB hardshell case is
included with each guitar.

Through more than three decades of production, the

Overwater name has become synonymous with the finest
by Tanglewood

handcrafted bass guitars in the UK. Over the years, the

instruments produced by Chris May and co. have only ever
been available in relatively limited numbers, usually to
players willing to wait for a custom build and able to afford
the inevitable price of ‘one off’ production.

But it has long been an aspiration of Chris’ to be able to

offer a line of Overwater instruments at prices available to
everyone while maintaining the standards that his company
has always stood for – that is, without compromise in
design, build quality or playability. A special collaboration
with Tanglewood has brought that vision to life.
