a) The curve C has the equation . Given that the point A, with coordinates

lies on the curve C and that the gradient of the tangent to C at A is 1, show that
a = 4 and b = 1. [4 marks]

b) Sketch in separate diagrams, the graphs of (i) curve C and (ii) , give the

equations of any asymptotes. [4 marks]

c) By drawing a suitable curve, the equation of which should be stated, on the graph of C.

Deduce that there is a small positive root of the equation [3 marks]

d) Using the Newton-Raphson method, with 0 as the first approximation, find this root

correct to 3 significant figures. [4 marks]

8. a) Sketch, on the same coordinate axes, the curves of y = ex and y = 2 + 3e – x. [2 marks]

b) Calculate the area of the region bounded by the x-axis, the line x = 3 and the curve

y = ex. [3 marks]

c) Calculate the area of the region bounded by the y-axis, the curves y = ex and

y = 2 + 3e – x. [4 marks]

d) Calculate the volume of the solid of revolution formed if the area of the region

bounded by the y-axis, the line y = 5 and the curve y = ex is rotated through four right

angles about the y-axis. [6 marks]
