Maths JSS 3 Week 8

The document provides instructions on solving simultaneous linear equations graphically. It explains how to make tables of values for two equations, plot the graphs on the same axes, and find the point of intersection which represents the solutions. An example is worked out step-by-step, showing the tables of values, plotted graphs, and solution point where the graphs cross. Students are given class work to complete tables and choose options to fill in the values for another pair of simultaneous equations.

JSS 3 MATHEMATICS WK 8

TOPIC: SIMULTANEOUS EQUATIONS (GRAPHICAL METHOD)

SUB- TOPIC: TABLE OF VALUES

 To plot any graph successfully, you will need TABLE OF VALUES. This should consist of your values for x - axis and
y - axis. Such as,
x 0 2 4

y -2 -1 0

Note: For any unspecified table, three set of values are usually good enough for any graph to be drawn.

LET’S SOLVE THIS EXAMPLE:

Copy and complete the table of values below for the equation y = 4x + 2.

X -2 -1 0 1 2

Y -2

SOLUTIONS:

Simply solve as follows;

~ When x = - 2 ~ When x = - 1 ~ When x = 0 ~ When x = 1 ~ When x = 2

y = 4x – 2 y = 4x – 2 y = 4x – 2 y = 4x – 2 y = 4x – 2

y = 4 (–2) – 2 y = 4 (–1) – 2 y = 4 (0) – 2 y = 4 (1) – 2 y = 4 (2) – 2

y = –8 – 2 = – 10 y = –4 – 2 = – 6 y=0–2=–2 y=4–2=2 y=8–2=6

THEN THE TABLE BECOMES;

X -2 -1 0 1 2

Y - 10 -6 -2 2 6

CLASS WORK:

X -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4

Y i -1 ii iii iv 7 V

Choose from options a – d below to complete the table above for the equation y = 2x + 1.

ASSIGNMENT:

Ogun State LASSWELL, Mathematics 2019 THEORY, question 1a.

TOPIC: SIMULTANEOUS EQUATIONS (GRAPHICAL METHOD)

SUB- TOPIC: simultaneous linear equations by graph method.

 To solve any simultaneous linear equations graphically, first make a table of values for each equations, then
draw the graph for both equations on the same graph page using any suitable scale of your choice (whenever
the scales are not given)

 Find the coordinates (values of x and y) where both graphs intersects (meets). These values are the solutions you
need. Extend the lines if necessary so that they intersects.

 You can confirm these solutions by putting your answers in the equations/questions given to make sure they satisfy
them. For any graph, you are meant to make use of pencil all thru on your graph sheet.

LET’S SOLVE THIS EXAMPLE:

Solve graphically: x – 2y = 4 and 2x – y = 5.

SOLUTIONS:

Recall; For any unspecified table, three set of values are usually good enough for any graph to be drawn.

x – 2y = 4 2x – y = 5

X -1 0 1 X -1 0 1

Y - 2.5 -2 -1.5 Y -7 - 5 - 3

Table 1 Table 2

Scale: 2cm to rep 1 unit on x – axis 3 2x – y = 5

2cm to rep 1 unit on y – axis 2

1 x – 2y = 4

–1 –1 –1 1 2 3 4 x – axis
–1

NOTE: Your graph should look like this. –4

Choose from options a

each tables besides for
–6 the equation 2x – y = – 1
and x – 2y = 4
CLASS WORK: –7 respectively.
