The document discusses key points from Gottschalk's book on historiography: 1) Only a small portion of total history was observed, remembered, recorded, and survived, affecting our limited understanding of the past. 2) Historical objects like monuments require human interpretation to become sources of history. 3) Gottschalk argues the authenticity of sources must be established before extracting credible details, to ensure the reliability of historical evidence.

1. Try to remember the last national holiday that we have.

Why do you think that the

common perception of a holiday is “no classes” (walang pasok) to the point that it has
become its meaning? What were lost, that we have come to view national holidays as
this? Why were they lost?

- The last holiday I remember is the EDSA People Power Revolution anniversary. This
holiday’s true essence and meaning are almost lost and forgotten, thus replaced by the
idea of not having classes during such occasions. Last February 25, which is a special
non-working holiday, we celebrated the EDSA People Power Revolution. Many Filipinos
enjoyed and celebrated this only as a non-working day. However, in actuality, more than
half of the Filipinos are still misinformed and remember that this day is the fall of the
Golden era set by the Marcoses. At this point, we become so concentrated on
celebrating the thought of not having classes rather than remembering the true meaning
of each holiday.

1. In Gottschalk’s book, history as now being read, is only a very minute portion of
the totality of history for very few information of the past were observed, few
were remembered, few were recorded, few survived. How would this affect your
reading and appreciation of history today?

- Gottschalk's book inspires me to study history with an objective mind. It bothers me to

think that there are many historical occurrences that we probably don't know about
since there is no written record of them. However, it still doesn't affect my reading and
appreciation of history today. These missing link and information excite me because it
helps me to have my interpretation of the history of what I have read. Thus, the lesser
information presented allows me to dig deeper to find the truth of what happened in the
past.

2. In the same book, a monument, a relic, a document would remain simply data
and will never be historical source without human element. What does this
mean?

- This indicates that for a historical book, monument, relic, or document to be considered
a historical source, a human intervention must be present for us to learn about its
history. Moreover, historical data necessitates collecting and interpreting primary
sources, which is essential to historical research and requires human elements.

3. In the historical method as discussed by Gottschalk, the third stage of the

historical method is the examination of genuineness of the source or material.
Why, do you think, the genuineness of the material should first be established
before the extraction of credible particulars would follow?

- As discussed by Gottschalk, historical methods are collections of rules and procedures

that historians might employ while investigating and writing about the past. It is critical
to demonstrate first the authenticity of the material to establish the reliability of
historical evidence of sources of history formation. Align with this; we can say that
obtaining credible information and testimonials from second-hand person narratives is
less dependable than eyewitness testimony. Therefore, when the material is closely
intertwined in the formulation of history, the authenticity of the source material grows.
Thus, the correctness of a historical event is more shown by how closely the material is
connected to the time of the historical event under examination before the extraction of
credible particulars.
