DLP Geothermal Power Plant

The document provides a detailed lesson plan for a Grade 9 science class on volcanoes and geothermal energy. The 45-minute lesson will use videos, discussions, activities, and a short quiz to help students understand geothermal power plants and why geothermal energy is a sustainable resource. Key points covered include the parts of geothermal power plants, how they generate electricity from heat underground, and why geothermal energy is renewable given the vast natural heat sources within the Earth.

ELICIT
 Let’s sum up our previous discussion before we
proceed to our next topic.

 The teacher will present a short video clip “The video is all about the parts of geothermal
about the geothermal power plant. power plant and how it works.”

 What was the video all about?

 How does geothermal power plant transform *Student answers may vary*
the heat from within into electricity?

 Does geothermal energy really a sustainable

one or not?
ENGAGE
Knowing your parts!

Geothermal power plants are built in order to

generate electricity using geothermal energy. There
are three main types of geothermal power plant
namely dry steam plants, binary cycle plants and the
most common is the flash cycle steam plants.

You have to identify the labeled parts which are

numbered 1 to 6 found inside the rectangular box.
Options are provided below the illustration.

*The teacher will call someone from the class to *Students actively participate in this activity*
answer*

EXPLORE
After the students are done labeling the parts, the
teacher will ask to the students. *Possible answers*

1. What are the essential parts of a geothermal 1. The essential parts of geothermal power
power plant? plant are turbine, generator, condenser,
cooling water.
2. What makes the turbine rotate?
2. Steam rotates the turbine.
3. What is the function of the turbine?
3. Turbines rotate to convert the thermal
energy from steam into mechanical
energy.

4. What makes a generator essential in a power 4. Generator is essential because it

plant? converts mechanical energy into
electrical energy.
5. Where does cooled water go after the process?
5. It goes to the injection well.
6. The illustration shown above is a flash cycle
steam geothermal power plant. By looking at 6. Flash cycle steam plant takes hot water
the parts, describe what a flash cycle steam from the deep and turns into steam to
plant is. cause the turbine to turn and so on. At
the end of the process, the water was
flashed back into the ground.
EXPLAIN
 The teacher will discuss about the parts and *The students will listen to the teacher’s
explain how geothermal power plant works. discussion*
 The teacher will also explain the importance of
geothermal energy as a sustainable source of
energy.

ELABORATE
After discussion, the teacher will ask a few questions
to the students.

Essential questions: *Possible answers*

1. Why geothermal energy is considered a 1. “Geothermal energy is sustainable

sustainable and renewable resource? and renewable because its source is
natural heat generated and stored
deep within the Earth's core. The
Earth's core contains an incredibly
vast amount of thermal energy and
some of this energy is accessible
near the crust.”

2. Why is it important how geothermal energy 2. "It is very essential to fully understood
works to be fully understood by everybody, how geothermal energy works by
including students, like you? Explain. everybody, including us, students,
since we are the primary consumers
of the energy produced by this type of
source. It would help us to be
conscious, from the smallest details
like saving electricity to still searching
for the most environmentally friendly
and highly accessible source of
energy."
*Thank you! *

EVALUATE
Short Quiz

A. Identify the parts of Geothermal Power Plant *Students will get ½ crosswise*
labelled 1-6. Write your answer in a ½ sheet of paper.

Students’ possible answer:

“Geothermal energy is sustainable and

renewable because its source is natural heat
B. Explain briefly why geothermal energy is considered generated and stored deep within the Earth's

EXTEND
Review the lessons start from types of volcano to
geothermal energy.

That’s all for today. I hope you learned something from
