CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Social media are websites and applications that allow users to share content,
ideas, opinions, beliefs, feelings, and personal, social, and educational experiences.
Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, Pinterest, TikTok, Discord, and Snapchat are
among the most popular and commonly used social media.
Social media becomes a distraction to the students since given the current
situation we're in, they have easier access to these distractions during online classes
compared to face-to-face classes. Students' use of social media has reached epidemic
proportions, interfering with their study time, resulting in poor language and spelling
when having a conversation on social media. There is so much media to consume, useful
or just for recreation, and not a lot of students know how to manage their time properly
yet so it can result to diverting their attention away from their academics, making it a
habit. Some students spend more time on social media than they do on academics. This
leads students' academic performances to be affected. Since the students have been
neglecting their studies and have been too busy being online.

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
Introduction to social media
A group of researchers stated that in social media communities and networks, users
can create, share, and exchange information, ideas, photos, and videos. Social media is
defined as "a collection of web-based apps that are based on the web 2.0's ideological and
technological basis tools that allow users to create and share their own content”. Students
who may look for inspiration for their projects and academic activities go to social media
to fuel their creativity. People who also have talent tend to post videos or pictures for
other people to enjoy and see. Furthermore, the creation of social media is reliant on
those who give content and those who consume it.
People can communicate with each other on highly interactive platforms. User-
generated material is shared, co-created, discussed, and modified by individuals and
communities. They make significant and pervasive changes to how people communicate
with one another. Individuals, corporations, organizations, and communities. When
students get stuck on problems they are answering, they go to the internet and search for
the question. They go through forums, and websites that teach the exact problems they
are stuck on, providing the students with more material to study and more methods to
use.
The objective of this research is to know the positive and negative impact of social
media, and how it affects the academic performance of the participants.

Social networks are websites and applications that allow users to share content,
ideas, opinions, beliefs, feelings, and personal, social, and educational experiences.
Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, Pinterest, TikTok, Discord, and Snapchat are
among the most popular and commonly used social media.
1. Facebook is an American online social media site that is owned by Meta Platforms.
allows students to discuss course content whenever they need to. When a student is
having difficulty with their studies or preparing their assignments, they can use Facebook
to ask questions, share information, and discuss with their peers.
2. Instagram is a social media site that can be used as a tool for students to stay up-to-date
on their interests and hobbies. Students are often encouraged to share what they're
learning in school, and Instagram is one of the easiest platforms for doing so.
3. YouTube is the most common social media service used to communicate with
students. It allows students to access and watch required videos anytime anywhere by
using their mobile devices like laptops, smartphones, and tablets PCs.
4. Students utilized Twitter as a research tool by using a search bar. Students can follow
relevant hashtags, search for people, topics, and keywords, or even subscribe to a list to
learn more information about a specific topic they are researching and learning in school.
5. Pinterest is one of the new technology tools for virtual learning. Students can develop
problem-solving skills while gaining a sense of independence. As they use Pinterest to
develop their creative muscles and their research skills, they will start to gain a sense of
self-reliance.
11
6. TikTok is a social media app that allows students to create and edit videos of three to
15 seconds or string together videos of up to 60 seconds. Students can create project,
spread awareness in the school, learn a new lesson, connect with other teachers and build
relationships with their classmates.
The popularity and regularity with which students use social media show that, when
used effectively, these networks may encourage out-of-class involvement, which may
eventually boost academic performance (Kuh, 2009). Social media sites have had a
significant impact on students' social presence. They have made a significant contribution
12
to increasing students' motivation to learn as an educational tool for online courses. When
the use of social networks is managed poorly, it can have negative consequences at the
individual and social levels.
Without a doubt social media has a huge influence towards students nowadays, it
helps students find entertainment and reach out to friends or family that are far away, but
social media can also make students too addicted to the point where it causes problems to
their daily lives.
Social media addiction is one of the greatest problems the youth and students have
faced. Addiction to social media can be seen as one of many forms of internet addiction,
where one shows a need to use social media excessively that it can affect the individual’s
everyday life negatively (Starcevic, 2013). Students with this addiction are overly about
what happens on social media and wish to scroll on it until they lost track of time and in
the end that’s the only thing they did that day (Andreassen & Pallesen,2014).
The difference between normal usage of social media and being addicted to social
media is that the latter can have not so good consequences when social media usage is out
of the persons control and compulsive (Andereassen, 2015). When we wake up most of
the times, we check our phones and notifications. When there are no classes or work the
time, we spend in bed and on our phones scrolling on social media can stall us from
actually starting our days. You can end up waking up at 7:30 am and getting up from
your bed at 9:00 am, wasting time and end up being less productive.
In a survey from Newport Academy, it shows that 76% of teens have and use social
media regularly and 50% of those teens say themselves that they are addicted to their
gadgets. It can also be shown on a study by the CNN where they research the relationship
of 13-year-olds and social media. The research revealed that the students who check
social media more frequently are averagely more upset. All the students use social media
in different frequencies but what they all have in common is that they want to connect
13
with their peers (Boyd, 2014), being informed of their lives constantly updating
themselves in the fear of being left out and their social status being ruined.
We have mastered the art of technology while obsessing over social media over the
last few generations. Social media was created to connect friends and family through the
online world, posting pictures, videos, and other media for followers to see. A large
portion of young generation’s trust comes from social media validation. A survey was
taken by the UK Digital Media Company called 383. The company found that 53% of the
younger generation prefer advice from social media outlets such as YouTube, Twitter,
Instagram etc. compared to their own parents' advice. When a student has the ability to
ask millions of people about the solution to a specific problem, like for example, he or
she searches the answer to their asynchronous activity, he or she becomes overly reliant
on social media. This, in turn, has a negative impact on many students' research skills,
which ultimately harms them in their professional lives. Furthermore, Because of the ease
of access to the internet, many students stop caring about learning anything from online
classes, knowing that there is already an answer to their activities somewhere on the
internet, and they become overly reliant on the internet.
Social media started out as a simple way for users to communicate electronically,
but it has now evolved into an addiction for students, teenagers, and even adults. Social
media takes away time spent learning; most young people are captivated by multiple
platforms and lose interest in their academics. Students have certainly spent their time in
front of their phones going through social media and talking with their virtual friends
14
throughout this pandemic. Aside from schoolwork and household responsibilities,
students are mostly obsessed with social media. Too much use of social media can
eventually lead to students being addicted. After starting use of social media, many
students are unable to focus or pay attention during their classes.
“I sit and watch a show that normally takes 45 minutes but end up watching more
episodes because I detest the idea of homework,” said by a student, Lily Berrios. Even
though she set a time for themselves to study, because of social media it makes them lose
track of time and end up not following their assigned schedule for themselves. Social
media can make one forget their self-discipline and end up not doing what they are
supposed to do. Some recent studies have been proven that the failure of self-control is
caused 35% of the time people has spent on social media (Du J., van Koningsbruggen G.,
Kerkhof P.) resulting in the delay of important assignments or the use of time not so
efficiently.
Despite its many advantages, social media is regarded as one of society's most
dangerous elements. If social media use is not monitored, it can have serious
consequences. Because social media is so easy to access, a lot of times, it becomes too
easy for students. They do not do their homework or asynchronous based on what they
have learned and instead turn to social media for answers. This becomes a habit and will
worsen over time. Some don’t even pay attention to their online classes anymore and just
scroll through different social media platforms whilst having classes.
15
The pervasiveness of social media has become an accepted fact. The Internet and
social media sites have become extremely important to today's youth. In their daily
communication, they spend the majority of their time social networking and text
messaging. Their reliance on technology has gone viral, and their use of social media has
had both positive and negative consequences. To put it another way, young generations
use social media for a variety of purposes, including entertainment, socializing, and
information gathering.
Students who spend too much time on social media become accustomed to writing
in slang. The usage of slang in a formal setting can be considered as disrespectful in
different contexts and creates a habit of consistently using incorrect grammar. As a result,
students perform poorly in academic writing assignments such as research papers and
exams. Later in life, when they join an office and have to compose professional mail, it
poses complications.
Slang is a very informal way of speaking and writing; it is normally used between
people in the same social group those people who have known each other for a very long
time. In the internet it can also mean the shortening of words or phrases to not take too
much time in texting. Examples of slangs are GOAT (Greatest Of All Time), Karen(way
to describe a person who is very rude especially to those who work in retail or any other
industries), Emo (someone who can be emotional or overdramatic), Sus (suspicious),
Flex(showing off), and many more. Writing “Wyd tbh ur getting on my nerves rn” will
sound very confusing for the receiver of the message if they are not adept in the meanings
of slang.
According to Kid Sense, an occupational therapy and speech therapy, social media
skills are the everyday use of our skills to talk and socialize with peers. It includes verbal
and nonverbal cues in a conversation, like gestures, talking, their facial expressions and
body language. Someone with very good social skills and read the social cues and know
what to say to others. Someone who has bad social skills though, can make people
uncomfortable and may respond to others in an inappropriate way.
16
Nowadays people are more on their cellphones than talking to someone face to face
(Belmont R. 2019), ignore socialization like waving their hands or looking their way to
acknowledge their presence. Parents are also getting concerned by the way their children
seem like they are somewhere else when talking to them because of being distracted by
their phones. The lack of words and their bad posture are all caused by being on their
phone and scrolling on social media too much.
It has been said earlier that to have good social skills you must understand the
verbal and nonverbal cues of when interacting with someone. In talking to your friend on
social media, it is very difficult for a person to learn and hone their social skills because
you can’t really see the person you are talking to eye to eye. Having this face-to-face
interaction with the other person builds this bond and can help you trust and respect each
other (Eatough, E.). In school settings, it is important to have social skills to tackle
multiple collaborative academic tasks. Students with great social skills often get to
efficiently work with their colleagues and at the same time get to know each other better
and have better cooperation.
17
and memory (Singh A, Uijtdewilligen L, Twisk J, VanMechelen W, Chinapaw M.). It has
been said that the health of the students, whether physical or mental, can heavily affect
their academic performance.
Social media can have a negative effect on the students and their health. Reports
that have been recorded by the National Institute of Mental Health have documented that
the lifetime frequency of mental health among teenagers is 49.5% and 22.2% of them will
suffer the severe effects of it in their lifetimes (2020). Social media can vastly affect the
student’s way of thinking about themselves and how they should look, or act, or feel
toward a certain topic. Already being distressed by schoolwork and their personal lives,
having almost always having to be self-conscious of how you act can be a big toll to their
health. Students having mental health diseases can cause them to lose motivation in
school and lower their academic performance.
GET INFORMATION
Because social media is so easy to use, it has become the most popular platform for
gathering information. The internet also allows people to connect even if they are
thousands of miles apart through social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram,
etc. Social media is a very popular, incredibly rapid, broad communication and learning
tool that has proven to be highly effective and is trusted by billions of people to share and
find material about people, companies, information, and entertainment. Social media has
become a global phenomenon, serving as a way of communication for friends,
classmates, and families worldwide. Since its beginning, social media has gathered a
large number of individuals, many of them are students. They used social media for
communication, searching, entertainment, and a variety of other purposes.
18
Social media plays an important role in every student's life. Accessing information,
providing information, and communicating via social media is frequently easier and more
convenient. Social media websites like google and YouTube can help students when they
are struggling to understand their lessons. They can watch videos on YouTube regarding
about some of their lectures they are having a hard time to understand. They can also use
google whenever they do their activities and need help about the meaning of some words,
they are not familiar with.
Teachers and students can communicate with one another and use these platforms
to improve their learning and teaching. Students and teachers can join a variety of groups
related to their course of study, demographics, school or college environment, and so on
through online platforms. You can join groups on WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, and
other platforms to gain access to high-quality information whenever you need it.
When we consider the positive aspects of social media, we find a lot of benefits.
The most important feature is that it is an excellent educational tool. All of the
information needed is only a click away. Students can use social media to educate
themselves on a variety of topics. Furthermore, because of social media, live lectures are
now possible. You can listen in on a lecture taking place in America while sitting in the
Philippines. Furthermore, as people distance themselves from newspapers, they
increasingly rely on social media for news. It keeps you up to date on the latest events in
the world. A person becomes more socially aware of global issues. It also strengthens
your bonds with your loved ones. Because of social media, distance is no longer an
impediment. For example, you can easily communicate with friends and relatives who
live in other countries. Most importantly, it provides a fantastic opportunity for young
aspiring artists to showcase their talent for free. You can also find great job opportunities
on social media.
Social media helps students develop their creative skills by allowing them to learn
and then execute the same by doing it themselves. A student's hidden talent is frequently
revealed when he or she begins to take pictures and use online editing skills to make them
aesthetically appealing. Many students have interesting hobbies that they share online
19
through videos and photographers, which helps them realize their potential for a career.
Social media helps students nowadays to show their talents online confidently, whether
it’s singing, dancing, drawing etc. Not only does social media help them come out of
their shell, it can also boost their confidence within their selves.
Tiktok, a very popular social media platform right now, has managed to show of all
kinds of creativity and talents to millions of users (Silvia). Anyone can be famous on
Tiktok, whether you dance, sing, cook, or make art, with Tiktok’s hashtag branding it
will surely reach the right people to the content you create. Even teachers here in Bacoor
Unida have incorporated social media in their teachings for students to be more interested
and find a new and creative way to execute it. That way, when students post their
performance tasks on social media, they get to show off their talents and feel confident
about them.
Students can express themselves beautifully on social media. Many students will be
terrified of what will happen if they express themselves. Social media can aid students’
creative process by breaking up their daily routine, exposing them to a diverse audience
that will help them see things differently, assisting with the removal of mental blocks,
and encouraging them to laugh more often. All of this will directly benefit and encourage
a student’s creativity.
20
Through data and information gathering, social media can help students improve
their academic performance and knowledge. When students are given assignments, they
search various online platforms for information to complete their assignments. Because
social media has no borders or boundaries, it allows students to connect with people from
all over the world and gain a broader understanding. When students are confused about
something while studying, social media can really help them gather the necessary
information through various online platforms.
Social media can also help students to gain knowledge to much more things other than
their education. They can learn about certain events that are happening around our globe
at the moment. They can access these information’s on Twitter, Facebook and some news
articles online. They also learn about the various cultures that exist around the world.
This includes their culture, traditions, language, lifestyle, food habits, and a plethora of
other intriguingly beautiful aspects. They can even learn about the various courses
available at universities all over the world.
The researchers found out some of relations of social media to the academic
performances of students. These relations have both positive and negative influence to
the students’ performances it just depends on how students use and control themselves in
using their social medias.
• ADDICTION
• PERCEIVED USEFULNESS
• PERSONAL EFFORT
• ENTERTAINMENT
21
1. Addiction to social media is one of the major threats to the students’ academic
performances. Male students are more prone to addiction than female students. Being
addicted to social media unable students to do their task risking them to poor GPA.
2. Perceived Usefulness. Social media enables students to learn more, understand, think
deeper, and accomplish, making them more able to adapt their knowledge and be
efficient in solving academic problems. Making it easier for students to enhance their
knowledge, skills, and apply critical thinking in their academics.
4. Excessive use. students who use social networks and internet more than average had a
poor academic achievement and low level of concentration in the class leading to poor
academic performance. Poor academic performance is one of the most important and
frequent consequence to the students’ academics. Excessive use of social media can lead
to addiction and has negative influence making students to do procrastination, reduce
sleeping quality, and increasing academic stress.
22
Chapter III
METHODOLOGY
This chapter will show the research methodology which includes the research
design. Sources of data, methods and procedures used in conducting the study. It will also
include the research respondents, research instruments, and data analysis.
Research Design
Research Instrument
The researchers will be using electronic surveys to gather data from the respondents
for their safety and to ensure the protocols and social distancing.
23
Surveys are a significant information assortment and examination apparatus that are
generally utilized with key partners, particularly clients and representatives, to find needs
or survey fulfillment.
Research Respondents
The researchers considered the junior High School students of Bacoor Unida
Evangelical School comprising of selected students per level, male and female, as the
respondents. They were the chosen respondents because their generation is evidently
dependent to technology. In addition to this Social Networking Sites for them is not only
a way for communication and socialization but also a good way of searching for
information. The respondents would be consisting of:
7-Jeremiah 8
8-Isaiah 7
8-Daniel 10
9-Elijah 9
9-Zechariah 10
10-Ezekiel 10
Sources of data
The data will come from the responses of our respondents, their answers will also
be collected by the researchers. The researchers will also take some of the sources of data
from our previous research that have been composed. The researcher’s sampling method
will be the simple sampling method both male and female students will be selected by a
use of a random number generator. The researchers will also consider the respondents’
availability and willingness to partake in the survey.
24
Data Gathering Procedure
The researchers had put in a lot of time, effort, and cooperation to create a
questionnaire that would be useful to their intended respondents. The survey was created
using relevant questions adapted from related research as well as individual questions
developed by the researchers. The Likert scale was used in the questionnaire to determine
whether a respondent agreed or disagreed with a statement. After the questionnaire was
approved by the teacher, high school students in grades 7 to 10 distributed copies to ten
respondents at Bacoor Unida Evangelical School. Participants were given time to
respond, and the survey questionnaire was collected the following working day by the
researchers.
The data collected from this research instrument was added up and computed for
interpretation based on the frequency of items checked by participants. In addition to
primary data, the researchers used secondary resources in the form of published articles
and literature to support the survey results.
Statistical Treatment of Data
The responses of the questionnaire by the junior high school students were
statistically analyzed with the data requirements of the study. The students were analyzed
by the questionnaire given to them. The interpreted data has been visualized by the use of
a bar graph and pie chart.
To interpret the data and the researchers will determine the frequency and
percentage distribution of the related variables of the participants

School Students of Bacoor Unida Evangelical School A. Y. 2021 – 2022” aims to
determine the following; What social media platforms are the students frequently using,
How is the use of social media influenced the academic performance of the selected
junior high school students in Bacoor Unida Evangelical School, and to determine if there
is a significant relationship between social media and academic performance of the
selected junior high school students in Bacoor Unida Evangelical School.
The researchers have used descriptive research and quantitive research throughout
the study. The research instrument used in the study was a survey with a 4-point Likert
scale (always, often, rarely, never). It consisted of 5 questions for each category of
positively or negatively being affected by social media on their academic performance.
The survey respondents consisted of 54 students from grade 7 to grade 10. The survey
was conducted on the Junior high school students of Bacoor Unida Evangelical School
A.Y 2021-2022 via google forms. The survey and data gathering procedure took about 1
week to finish.
CONCLUSION
After the data collection and analysis done in the previous chapter, the researchers
concluded that:
Students often use social media (48.15%) during online classes; therefore,
students are prone to get distracted by their studies because of social media.
The most often social media platform used by the students of Bacoor Unida is
Tiktok (38.89%); therefore, students spend most of their time browsing social
media through Tiktok.

A lot of students say that social media is more effective in communicating with
friends (42.59%). Students use social media to communicate with their friends
and family easier.

Students are not confident in their abilities to post it on social media.
Students often use social media more than studying (48.15%). Students spend a
significant amount of their time on social media instead of studying.
The last thing before students sleep do is to browse social media often (33.33%),
for that reason, students sleep schedule might be affected because of the use of
social media.
The first thing students do is check social media notifications (33.33%), for that
reason, students are heavily addicted, to the point where the first thing they do
every morning is check their social platforms.

RECOMMENDATIONS
For the students to limit the time they spend on social media sites per day and
encourage them to substitute those hours for reading novels and relevant academic books
to improve their knowledge. For future student government council members to provide
advice to Bacoor Unida Evangelical School students in order to raise awareness. They
can do things like promoting awareness on social media and encouraging students to
focus on the academic value of those sites rather than using them for negative purposes.
79
For the teachers, we recommend ensuring they use social media as a tool to
improve students' academic performance in school and that they are monitored on how
they use these sites. Also, help students by teaching them how to manage their time
effectively using social media. This will also help them to prevent distractions that can be
provided by social media and give careful consideration to their studies.
For the parents, we recommend giving their children a time limit on the use of
social media so that they avoid increased anxiety and decreased self-esteem. Parents can
also guide their children on how to use social media so that they are aware of their
children's right and wrong actions. They should avoid using social media for an extended
period of time because it will have an impact on their lives, especially their education. If
parents guide and assist their children, they can avoid the overuse of social media, be
more aware of their actions, and give careful consideration to their learning. Being on 2
to 4 social media platforms and being active on it is alright but being active on more than
that can take a toll on their health and usage of time. Giving their children a set amount of
screen time per day can help them limit being on social media and focus on their day.
For the principal, we recommend using social media as a more interactive way of
learning and making the students more excited to participate in class. Quiz websites such
as kahoot, quiziz, quizlet, etc. make taking a test look like a game with its design and
gimmicks. Children have short attention spans so it is important to catch their attention
rather than just the typical reading of the module and ask them to repeat what you say.
80
Future researchers, we recommend further educating yourselves about social
media culture and the effect it can have on their everyday lives. Other than what we have
specified in this study, also gives light to what other negative or positive effects it can
have with their well-being and academic performance.
