Cep Vibration

The natural frequency of a mass-spring system depends on the mass and stiffness of the spring. The natural frequency can be calculated using the formula: ωn = √(k/m), where k is the stiffness of the spring and m is the mass. Resonance occurs when the frequency of external vibration equals the natural frequency of the system, causing large oscillations. MATLAB can be used to plot the transient response over time and determine amplitude and phase angle. The time for maximum and minimum response of an under-damped single degree of freedom system can also be found using MATLAB. Resonance during landing can be prevented by ensuring the runway vibration frequency and the natural frequency of the landing gear are out of phase.

Part A: For any mass-spring

spring system, explain the natural frequency of vibration.

Natural Frequency:

“If a system after an initial disturbance is left to vibrate on its own the
frequency with which it oscillates without external forces is known as its natural
frequency.”

“The natural frequency as the name implies is the frequency at which the
system resonates is called natural frequency.”

For mass-spring system

Natural frequency of system depends upon factors

factors:

1) The amount of mass

2) The stiffness of beam which acts as a spring

Mathematical Formula:

𝒌
𝝎𝒏 =
𝒎

Where (k) is stiffness of spring and (m) is mass of body.

Unit:

Natural frequency has SI unit of “rad/sec.”

Part B. To identify the system’s main parameters using MATLAB to plot x (t) with
time and determine the amplitude and phase angle of the transient response.

By using MATLAB coding the relationship between time and amplitude is given as
Graph between time and amplitude is given as

The relationship between phase angle and amplitude the coding is given as

Graph between phase angle and amplitude as

Part C. Use MATLAB to find the time “t” for maximum and minimum response x (t) of
the under-damped
damped single degree freedom system.

Time for the maximum response = Tmaxi = 1.80ms

Time for the minimum response = T mini = 64.7ms

The values of maximum and minimum responses were determined given as

Part D: What is the frequency of runway vibration required to cause resonance?

Explain why it is happen?

Resonance:

“If
If the frequency of the external force coincides with one of the natural
frequencies of the system a condition known as resoresonance
nance occurs and the system
undergoes dangerously large oscillations.
oscillations.”

So, when the frequency of the runway vibration becomes equal to the natural
frequency of the landing gear or their respective ratio becomes one then resonance starts.

Examples:

Failures of such structures as buildings, bridges, turbines, and airplane wings

have been associated with the occurrence of resonance.
Why does it happen?

It happens because the amplitude of the vibration comes in phase with the
amplitude of disturbing force and that is the main reason for the resonance of a system.

Part E: Suggest how to prevent resonance from occurring on landing gear?

The resonance can be prevented by keeping the runway frequency

and natural frequency out of phase because when the amplitude of the vibration comes in
phase with the amplitude of disturbing force and that is the main reason for the resonance
of a landing gear. So, these frequencies must be out of phase.
