Blue Skies
(By: Christine Tothill)

Walter pulled himself up from his chair. He shielded his eyes from the sun and peered
toward the mountains. The bluest sky, not a cloud to be seen, not even a puff or a slight trail.
“Norah, you there? Come on out here,” he yelled, without turning round. “You calling
me?” A woman, slight and small came from the doorway and stood beside him. “I’m getting a
meal ready – you like it on time – why you calling me out here, to look at nothing?” She
turned, bent down to pick a mug from the floor and started to go inside.
“How d’you know I’m looking at nothing? I ain’t showed you yet.” Walter sat back in his
creaking chair. “Something ain’t right. Not been a cloud in the sky since I came out here,” He
put a hand down to pick up the mug, smiled a cunning smile at Norah when he noticed it her
hand. “Not finished that yet.”
“It’s as cold as the tops of those mountains,” she snapped. “Five minutes and you’ll be
eating. Going on about the sun, the wind, the rain. That’s all you do Walter - talk about the
weather.”
Walter had time to light up one more before tucking into the hot stew and mashed
potatoes Norah had prepared. Sweat was dripping down his face as he ate. Bread dunked into
greasy gravy finished the meal off and if was time for his afternoon nap, in his rickety chair
on the veranda. Before he got up to leave the table he looked at Norah’s face.set in grim

Bahasa Inggris – Kelas XI

mode, it showed composure while she at her meal, not even a flushed cheek. The fan stayed
still above their heads and he wondered why she hadn’t turned it on.
“Where you going now, Walter?” she asked as he prepared to leave the table. Norah
stood and collected the dirty dishes. She stood over him, waiting for him to answer.
“On the veranda where I always go,” he said, “You know I do, after our meal.”
“You know what today is?” she said. “Or don’t you? Think about it Walter. Sit there and
think about it while I make us some coffee.”
Walter sat and thought. He thought about the blu sky, the lack of wind, the stillness
outside. He thought about his room, the dark walls, the closed windows, the drawn drapes. He
wondered what he was doing here. Walter listened to the familiar noises from the kitchen,
s,elled the aromaof the coffe and felt somethinwas wrong.
“Worked it out yet, Walter?” Norah touched the top of his hand. “You’re thinking real
hard in there.” She placed the coffee pit down and pulled her chair a little nearer to his.
“You’ve got to work it out for yourself, Walter.”
Her grim face tried to soften, tried to crease into a smile. He watched it, waiting for her to
scold him. But it didn’t change, it grimaced and stayed stern and he didn’t know why. He
wondered if she was worried about something she might not have told him. What he had done
wrong – if anything.
“A sunny day with a blue sky, “he said standing up. “I’m sitting outside watching the sun
go down, if that’s fine with you?”
“The sun isn’t going down yet, Walter. It’s mid June. If you think about it,you’ll know,”
Walter sat in his old chair on the veranda, Norah sat beside him on a hard stool. She took
his hand in his and held on tight.
“You’re getting stuff all muddled up. Walter, you’re starting to get the days wrong, the
seasons wrong.” She rubbed too hard and it hurt him, hurt his veins.
“I’m getting like Pop, is that the truth Norah?” Walter watched her face again as she
thought about the question, it was always the same. Serious – not smiling – butserene. His
lovely Norah.
“You could just about say that,” she said. “But don’t fret,we’ll go up to the clinic and get
you checked out, like we did Pop.”

Things I wish I’d known at 18

Friends often say to me ‘Jo, what do you regret most in life?’ and while it’s pointless to
have regrets given that we can’t change the past, I do occasionally look back and wonder

Bahasa Inggris – Kelas XI

how different my life might have been if I’d known at eighteen what I know now. How
different all our lives would be with the benefit of hindsight, of course.
I wish I’d known that it doesn’t matter if you make mistakes. I was brought up by
parents who were very ambitious, perhaps over-ambitious, particularly when it came to me.
They wanted to realise all of their dreams through their daughter. I became a perfectionist,
always striving to be the best in the class. 99 percent was just not good enough. I suppressed
my rebellious streak and became their dutiful daughter. My grades were good enough to get
me into a top university and I passed all of my exams with flying colours. When I look back I
realise I didn’t even think to question what it was that I wanted to do.
I wish I’d known that it’s the journey that matters, not the final destination. My life was
mapped out for me: university, career, marriage, children, security and retirement and the
inevitable ‘if only’. I started out as planned with no surprises: a secure job with good pay and
prospects. All of my friends were on the same path but deep down I knew that there was
something missing. Was this all there was? I’ve always loved travelling and started to live for
those precious weeks of holiday. I’d pore over brochures and travel guides and search out the
most obscure untouched places. Increasingly I felt more and more alive whenever I was away
from my normal everyday environment.
Some of us have the freedom to make choices and in my case, I finally chose to go.
After a particularly stressful week at work, I decided to quit and that was quite simply the
best thing I’ve ever done. I can honestly say that from that moment on, my life turned into an
adventure.
I wish I’d known that everything happens for a reason. The reason might not initially be
obvious but when we look back we can understand why something did take place. I’ve
learned not to question but to accept whatever comes my way and that is one of the most
valuable lessons that life has taught me.

31. From the text we can conclude ....

(You can answer more than one).
[opsi no=31 pg=1] Jo believes hindsight would change everyone’s lives

THE DEATH OF A GHOST

For years, villagers believed that Endley farm was haunted. The farm was owned by
two brothers, Joe and Bert Cox. The farm laborers said that they always woke up to find that
work had been done overnight. Hay had been cut and cow sheds had been cleaned. No one
suspected that there might be someone else on the farm who had never been seen.
This was indeed the case. A short time ago villagers were astonished to learn that the
ghost of Endley had died. Everyone went to the funeral, for the ‘ghost’ was none other than
Erix Cox, a third brother who was supposed to have died as a young man. After the funeral, Joe
and Bert revealed a secret which they had kept for over forty years.
Eric had been the eldest son of the family. He had been obliged to join the army during
the first World War. As he hated army life, he decided to desert his regiment. When he learnt
that he would been abroad, he returned to the farm and his father hid him until the end of the
war.
Fearing the authorities, Eric remained in hiding after the war as well. His father told
everybody that had he been killed in action. The only other people who knew the secret were
Joe and Bert. They did not even tell their wives. When their father died, they thought it was
their duty to keep Eric in hiding.
All these years, Eric had lived as a recluse. He used to sleep during the day and work at
night, quite unaware of the fact that he had become the ghost of Endley. When he died,
however, his brothers found it impossible to keep the secret any longer.

When Lucy Hopkins took a gap year before going to university, she could never
have imagined how life-changing it would be. She decided to go travelling with a
few friends. After hours of research on the internet, they finally bought round-the-
world tickets and started their adventure in Australia. First stop: Ayers Rock (in the

exploring the gigantic sandstone monoliths of the area. But it wasn’t the natural
wonders that captured Lucy’s imagination − it was the history of the Aboriginal
people who had lived there long before European settlers arrived. She decided to
stay on after her friends left. She wanted to find work at the resort so she could learn
more about the Dreamtime, the myths and legends of these extraordinary people.
Much to her parents’ concern, she has given up her college place and will reapply
next year for a course in anthropology.

‘It’s never too late to follow your dreams.’ So said fifty-year-old yachtsman, Daniel
Laws, when we caught up with him recently. He’d just returned from a six-month
trip sailing around the Caribbean and was looking forward to some creature
comforts in his own home. When asked what had made him give up his job to take
to the seas, he said that he’d fallen in love with the Indonesian island of Bali.
He’d stepped off the plane one October afternoon, straight into a wall of steaming,
tropical heat. One hair-raising taxi ride later, he found himself in a beachside ‘bed
and breakfast’ looking out over seas of the deepest blue. He was hooked. From that
moment on, he spent all his time either in or on the water and he promised himself
that he would return when he had his own boat.

Marek Lendl has always been passionate about history, particularly the history of
his city, Prague. As a child, he was taken out every Sunday by his grandfather, who
taught him about all the buildings, castles, churches and ruins. They would spend
hours visiting galleries and museums until Marek knew almost as much as his
grandfather. He is now a city guide, taking round groups of foreign tourists, and it is

notice her and he just remembers being amazed that anyone could ask so much.

The Lion King

In the Pride Lands of Africa, a lion ruled over the animals as a king. The birth of King Mufasa and
Queen Sarabi’s son Simba created envy and resentment in Mufasa’s younger brother, Scar, who knew
his nephew now replaced him as heir to the throne. After Simba had grown into a young cub, Mufasa
gave him a tour of the Pride Lands, teaching him the responsibilities of being a king and the Circle of
Life. Later that day, Scar tricked Simba and his best friend Nala into exploring a forbidden elephant
graveyard, despite the protests of Mufasa’s hornbill majordomo Zazu. At the graveyard, three spotted
hyenas named Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed attack the cubs before Mufasa, alerted by Zazu, saved them and
forgave Simba for his actions. That night, the hyenas, who were allied with Scar, plot with him to kill
Mufasa and Simba.

The next day Scar lured Simba to a gorge and told him to wait there while he got Mufasa. On Scar’s
orders, the hyenas stampeded a large herd of wildebeest into the gorge. Mufasa saved Simba, but as
Mufasa tried to climb up the gorge’s walls, Scar threw him back into the stampede, where he was
trampled to death. After Simba found Mufasa’s body, Scar convinced him he was responsible for his
father’s death and advised Simba to flee the kingdom. As Simba left, Scar ordered Shenzi, Banzai, and

Ed to kill the cub, but Simba escaped. That night, Scar announced to the pride that both Mufasa and
Simba were killed in the stampede and stepped forward as the new  king, allowing a pack of hyenas to
live in the Pride Lands.

After running far away, Simba collapsed from exhaustion in a desert. Timon and Pumbaa, a meerkat
and a warthog, found him and nursed him back to health. Simba subsequently grew up with them in
the jungle, living a carefree life with his friends under the motto “Hakuna Matata” (“no worries” in
Swahili). When he was a young adult, Simba saved Timon and Pumbaa from a hungry lioness, who
turned out to be Nala. She and Simba reconciled and fell in love. Nala urged Simba to return home,
telling him the Pride Lands had become a wasteland with not enough food and water. Feeling guilty
over his father’s death, Simba refused and stormed off, leaving Nala disappointed and angry. As Simba
exited the jungle, he encountered Mufasa’s mandrill friend and advisor, Rafiki. Rafiki told Simba that
Mufasa was “alive” and took him to a pond. There Simba was visited by the ghost of Mufasa in the sky,
who told him he took his rightful place as the king of the Pride Lands. Simba realized he could no
longer run from his past and went home. Nala, Timon, and Pumbaa joined him and agreed to help
him.

At the Pride Lands, Simba saw Scar hit Sarabi and confronted him, but Scar taunted Simba over his
“part” in Mufasa’s death. However, when Scar pushed Simba to the edge of Pride Rock, he revealed
that he killed Mufasa. Enraged, Simba roared back up and forced Scar to reveal the truth to the pride.
Timon, Pumbaa, Rafiki, Zazu, and the lionesses fended off the hyenas while Scar, attempting to escape,
was cornered by Simba at the top of Pride Rock. Scar begged Simba for mercy, insisting that he was
family and placing the blame on the hyenas. Simba no longer believed Scar but spared his life on the
grounds of forever leaving the Pride Lands. Scar appeared to comply but then attacked his nephew.
After a fierce fighting, Simba threw his uncle off Pride Rock. Scar survived the fall but was attacked and
eaten alive by the hyenas, who overheard his attempted to betray them.

With Scar and the hyenas gone, Simba ascended to the top of Pride Rock and took over the kingdom
as the rain fell again. Sometime later, with Pride Rock restored to its former glory, Simba looked down
happily at his kingdom with Nala, Timon, and Pumbaa by his side; Rafiki presented Simba and Nala’s
newborn cub to the inhabitants of the Pride Lands, and the Circle of Life continued.
