Chapter IV

This chapter presents the results of an experiment on the growth of Brassica Rapa subsp. chinensis (Pechay) in different media (hydroponics, soil, coconut husk). The researchers measured the number of leaves, plant height, and root length over 14 days in 3 trials per media. The results showed that soil produced the highest number of leaves, coconut husk the tallest plants, and hydroponics the longest roots. However, statistical analysis found no significant difference in leaf number between media. Overall, soil and hydroponics were the most effective media for Pechay growth.

Results and Discussion

This chapter presents the results collected from the experimentation of the growth

performance of Brassica Rapa subsp. chinensis (Pechay) seed in different media:

Hydroponics, Soil, and Coconut Husk, and the accumulated data is gathered and

discussed. The researchers used three (3) trials in each media to properly execute the

experiment and to have a better conclusion on the results. The experiment should

happen on March 21 – April 04, 2022, but the researchers experience a delay in

planting the pechay seed, due to unforeseen circumstances. The gathering of the data

of the experiment happened on April 06, 2022. On the 14 th day the researchers

conducted their measurement in terms of three (3) parameters: number of leaves, plant

height, and root length. In the whole course of experimentation, the researchers

encountered a problem with the sunlight since the weather on the past few weeks were

not that good. The solution that the researchers imposed is that, they are exposing the

pechay seedlings in the sunlight every morning around 6 am – 10 am since the pechay

seeds need to get at least 4 hours of direct sunlight in order to grow faster and healthier.

Hydroponics 3.5 4.3 4.5

Soil 2.7 3.5 3.2

Coconut Husk 2.3 2.9 2.6

Table 3 represents the growth performance of Brassica Rapa subsp. chinensis

(Pechay) in terms of its root length. Each media has 3 trials to properly conduct the

experiment that lasted for 14 days. In the first media, Hydroponics, on trial 1, the root

length of Brassica Rapa subsp. chinensis (Pechay) is 3.5 cm. On trial 2 its length is 4.3

cm, and on trial 3, its length is 4.5 cm. In the next media, the Soil, on trial 1 its root

length is 2.7 cm, on trial 2, its length is 3.5 cm. and on trial 3, its length is 3.2 cm.

Finally, on Coconut Husk, trial 1 has a root length of 2.3 cm, on trial 2 its length is 2.9

cm, and on trial 3, its length is 2.6 cm.

Based on the given data, it shows that each media is effective as a planting

media for Brassica Rapa subsp. chinensis (Pechay). On the three (3) media (i.e.

Hydroponics, Soil, Coconut Husk), it shows that in terms of the number of leaves, Soil is

the most effective media since it is shown on the results that planting Pechay on Soil,

obtained a higher number of leaves compared to the other media. In terms of plant

height, given on the data, it shows that planting Pechay in Coconut Husk is the most

effective since it shows a higher results of plant height in three (3) trials compared to the

two other media. In terms of root length, hydroponics is the most effective since it shows

in the results that the roots of Pechay is much more longer when it is in Hydroponics

compared to the other media. This study revealed that Soil and Hydroponics are much

better and more effective as a media for Pechay to grow, showing great results in terms

of the number of leaves and the root length, but in terms of plant height, Coconut Husk

shows better results. Based on the overall results, it shows that the best media for

Brassica Rapa subsp. chinensis (Pechay) to grow is in Soil and Hydroponics.

According to BD on Business Diary Philippines, Pechay produces and grows well

on sandy to clay loam soil throughout the dry season. It can be planted or sown straight

in the ground. Plant spacing should be 10 cm between plants and 20 cm between rows

for optimal development. To minimize damping off and produce healthy seedlings, the

amount of watering should be controlled. On the study of Diputado et al, it shows that

Pechay plants grown in the recirculating hydroponics system grew taller, developed

more leaves, matured earlier, and yielded and profited significantly more. It also grow

significantly taller in hydroponics because the roots of the plant essentially bathed in

nutrients, they may absorb them quickly and directly with little effort.

The one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was employed to determine whether

there is a difference in the number of leaves of Brassica Rapa susp. chinensis (Pechay)

planted in different media. The p-value (.332) is higher than the level of significance

(0.05), therefore, it can be concluded that there is no significant difference in the

number of leaves of Brassica Rapa subsp. chinensis (Pechay) planted in different

media. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis is rejected.

One-way ANOVA was also employed to determine whether there is a significant

difference in the root length of Brassica Rapa subsp. chinensis (Pechay) when it was

planted in three (3) different media. The p-value (0.13) is lesser than the level of

significance (0.05), therefore, it can be concluded that there is significant difference in

the root length of Brassica Rapa subsp. chinensis (Pechay) in three (3) different media.

Therefore, we reject the null hypothesis, and accept the alternative hypothesis.

Growing medium are mixes of components that give plants with water, air,

nutrients, and support. Plant support is provided by the media, while nutrients are

provided by fertilizers. The pore spaces in the media deliver water and air. Organic

materials that have been properly composted have been successfully used in potting

mixes, according to research. When utilized as a component in a potting mix, however,

the compost rarely provides enough nutrients, necessitating the use of additional

fertilizer (Effect of Growing Media on Water and Nutrient Management, 2017).

Plants require a stable environment in which to grow their roots, which soil offers.

Soil allows the root system to grow outwards and downwards, providing your plants with

the support they require to thrive. A plant can take root in soil because it is a favourable

environment. The ability of root to grow and give water and nutrients to leaves is

influenced by soil structures (How does soil affect plant growth, 2021). In hydroponics,

according to the article “Hydroponic Gardening For Beginners”, the additional oxygen in

hydroponics growing medium aids root growth. Plants with plenty of oxygen in their root

systems absorb nutrients more quickly. In a hydroponics system, nutrients are

combined with water and delivered directly to the root system. In the article “Benefit of

Using Coconut Husks in Your Garden”, it was stated that coconut husk expands in such

a way that it provides excellent aeration for your plants’ roots. Some planting materials

tend to compact too tightly around plants, suffocating them over time. Coconut husk

products, on the other hand, allow oxygen to freely circulate around plant roots, which

helps to preserve plant health and, as a result, allows them to grow larger and faster.

This shows that hydroponics, soil, and coconut husk as media are effective in

growing pechay plant in terms of root length, test results showed that there is a

significant difference in the root length between the three groups.
