Technology and Internet Essays

1. The Internet is generally considered as a blessing for mankind. Do the

advantages of it out-weigh its disadvantages?
The Internet has revolutionized the world dynamically over the past few
decades. It has been hailed (To describe something or someone as being very
good) as a boon (blessing) for all sections of mankind in a wide variety of
utilizations. Firstly, this essay will discuss the advantages of the internet and
how it is beneficial for people and then will argue why the drawbacks hold little
significance.
On the positive side, the internet is an excellent aid to study. For example,
students can instantly gain access to any information they want and prepare
their projects at ease. Internet is helping people to connect with their family,
friends and acquaintances across the globe through social media platform such
as Facebook and Gmail. E-mail, E-shopping, E-banking all have changed the
social scenario unrecognizably. E-commerce, which has been hassle-free by the
internet, has boosted the economies of several developing nations to a great
extent. Perhaps, another feather to the cap of the internet is greater co-
operation and understanding between nations by the way of globalization.
On the negative side, however, the internet can be harmful in several ways.
Internet games, for instance, are very addictive and can distract students from
their studies. Their sedentary life style leads to various lifestyle illnesses.
Pornographic sites can mislead children. Moving on to the more serious
dangers of the internet, cyber-crimes are rampant (uncontrolled) and this
technology is being extensively exploited by terrorists to perpetuate (= create,
commit) violence and lawlessness.
In conclusion, it can be established that the merits of the internet are
numerous such as connecting people globally, greater global cooperation and
they certainly out-weigh its demerits. The negative aspects of it are, no doubt,
severe. But once they are overcome, the internet can certainly be termed as a
blessing for mankind.
2. Many employees work at home using modern technology today. Some
people think only workers and not employers benefit from it. To what
extent do you agree or disagree?

Telecommuting, the process of employees working at home with the aid of

modern electronic gadgets, is gaining ground in various parts of the world.
It is often misjudged that it only benefits the employees and not the
employers. This essay, however, disagrees with this notion because
employers are also equally profited from this new development.

Firstly, looking at the matter from the employee’s perspective, executing

their duties from home has obvious charms. They need not, for instance,
commute long distances to and from their work places, which can be tiring
and time consuming. An additional benefit of this is that traffic will be that
much reduced, resulting in less pollution and traffic congestion. Moreover,
they can work in a free and relaxed environment at their ease without
being supervised. They can also attend to their spouses and offspring’s and
do some household chores while working.

It is, however, baseless to believe that employers do not gain from

telecommuting. On the contrary, they also reap fruits of it. To exemplify,
they need not maintain an elaborate infrastructure to accommodate all the
employees at high maintenance costs. Overhead expenses of keeping a
large establishment can be cut down. Moreover, supervisory staff can be
eliminated. Above all, since the staff perform their duties in their own
quarters in relaxed atmosphere, their output will be qualitatively and
quantitatively better.

Thus, it can be established from foregoing debate that this innovation in the
work culture, telecommuting, is beneficial to both the employee and
employer. Whereas the worker enjoys stress free job environs, the
entrepreneur can cut costs and secure quality performance. The one-sided
argument of people is baseless and cannot be agreed to.
3. The internet has become central to our lives as it provides more and
more information, act as interactive entertainment and as a means of
voting etc. These functions have obvious benefits, but there are
dangers involved in the control the internet is exercising over our lives.
To what extent do you agree to this view?

Undoubtedly, these days, almost every walk of life is influenced by the

internet. Computers and the Internet will become indispensable (=
unavoidable) in the near future since every human activity will be
controlled by them. This essay is of the view that while this dependence is
beneficial in many ways, there are serious setbacks behind them.
The positive aspects of the internet are manifold (= many) and they have
become an inevitable part of human life. For instance, it is a mine of
information and knowledge about any subject under the sun, which is only a
click away. It is of great value for scholars, scientists, doctors, engineers and in
fact, to people of all walks of life. E-mail is, no doubt, the last word in instant
communication and its boons are enjoyed by one and all the world over.
Commerce, banking, education, health care, aviation and even entertainment
and voting are all controlled by the internet now. In the future, even
governance of nations will be entirely guided by it.
However, the downsides of the internet are also quite a few. To exemplify,
when every activity of the government is linked to the internet, any small error
in the system can, perhaps, bring the smooth functioning of the nation to a
standstill and life may be paralyzed. Even electric failures can affect strategic
networks. Hackers and terrorists can break through even complex network
systems to achieve their evil intents.
In winding up, it should be admitted that the Internet is playing a pivotal role in
human life now. While its utility is commendable, there are several dangers
associated with it and blind dependence on it can be disastrous. It is
imperative, therefore, that the governments the world over should work in
tandem (working together) to find solutions for its problems.
4. Modern technology is creating a single world culture and it is good for
mankind. Do you agree or disagree with the statement?
Thanks to the breakthroughs in technology, a new international order has
emerged. The Internet, modern transportation, the spread of global visual
media and the global trade and commerce have all brought about many
changes in every sphere of human life. This essay is in complete agreement
with the view that these are creating a universal culture, which is beneficial to
mankind.

First of all, the technological improvements in the field of communication and

faster transportation have made time and space a less severe problem to deal
with. The internet is a mine of information and it has united people who are
scattered in alien and distant lands. Technological advancements in the fields
of automobiles, railway and air transport have enabled people to travel
extensively. As a result of all the above factors, companies have become MNCs
and business has become global.
Moreover, as media has become global, people, the world over, view and
enjoy artistic and cultural programs originated in distant lands. This is made
possible with the help of the state-of- the-art technologies and English, the
language royal. As seeing is believing, watching different global scenes has
considerably reduced cultural prejudices and it has evolved into a global
culture. It is sensible to assume that this universal culture would go a long way
in unifying the different kinds of people the world over and maintain world
peace.
To conclude, by uniting human beings and their activities, modern technology
is creating a single world culture. Technology has made all the different
customs and cultural traditions the common property of mankind. It is
interesting that this phenomenon has several dimensions and they together
make many positive changes for mankind.
5. In the future, students may have the choice of studying at home by
using technology such as computers and television or of studying at
traditional schools. Which would you prefer?

The growth of technology offers unlimited scope and, perhaps, in future,

students will get the opportunity to learn without going to school, by
using computers and other electronic gadgets. Modern technology has
made homeschooling successful. This essay, however, expresses
preference for traditional schools and the reasons are explained
henceforth.

Firstly, from the academic point of view, the presence of a teacher and
classmates, is essential to make education fruitful. To cite an example, a
teacher can pay individual attention to students and this is central to the
proper development of an individual. No machine can motivate a
student, but a teacher can. Only a teacher, can assess a student’s
weakness and assist them accordingly.

Secondly, socially no one can remain as an island. People have to get

integrated into society in order to achieve this object. For example,
individuals learn the value of social mingling at first when they go to
school and interact with their teachers and peer group.

Finally, psychologically, everyone needs to love and to be loved, to be

appreciated and to be encouraged. People get these needs fulfilled only
when they mingle with others, especially with peer group. Going to
school certainly gives the invaluable opportunity to achieve all these.

To conclude, trying to replace teachers with machines is denying the

various needs of man mentioned above. Conversely, the wonderful
gizmos (= gadgets/device) can make activities easier and more pleasant.
Although computers and other electronic equipment can help in the
learning process, the role of schools cannot be ignored in shaping the
destiny of children.
6. Technology has facilitated our lives so much and given us a lot of
freedom. Some people believe that this freedom has caused more
problems for us. What is your view?
Technology, the buzzword today, has enabled mankind to have freedom and
has improved the quality of our lives. There are many people who believe that
this freedom has attracted many problems for us. This essay makes an attempt
to look at the latter view with the empathy it deserves.
First and foremost, modern science has made us free from many dreaded
diseases, which people had to suffer in the past. However, we are getting new
diseases like AIDS and some of the old ones are returning. A good example for
this is drug resistant tuberculosis which is prevalent (= widespread in a
particular area) in some parts of the world even today. Again, although, we
have achieved considerable reduction in birth and death rates, taking care of
the elderly has now become a very big challenge, especially in the most
advanced nations.
Secondly, in spite of making our lives comfortable, technology has increased
our destructive strength. For instance, in the name of nationalism and
patriotism many countries, which are unable to look after their citizens, are
acquiring weapons of mass destruction, which is of great concern. Similarly, it
is seen that some developing nations are spending excessive sums of money
for space technology.

On analyzing the pros and cons of freedom generated by technology, it can be

argued that technological advances have blessed mankind with an abundance
of modern amenities to make life better and easier. What is often overlooked
by the world is the fact that it has a dark side as well.
