REVISION GRADE 9

1. A particle is moving in a circular path of radius r. The displacement after half a circle would be
(a) Zero
(b) πr
(c) 2r
(d) 2πr

2. A body is thrown vertically upward with velocity u, the greatest height h to which it will rise is,
(a) u/g
(b) u2/2g
(c) u2/g
(d) u/2g
Solution:
(b) At highest point, v = 0
Using v2– u2 = 2as, we get
0- u2=2(-g)h( ∵ a=-g and s=h)
or h=u2/2g

3. The numerical ratio of displacement to distance for a moving object is

(a) always less than 1
(b) always equal to 1
(c) always more than 1
(d) equal or less than 1
Solution:
(d) As displacement is the shortest distance between two positions so it is generally less
than distance. But displacement can be equal to distance when path taken is a straight
line. So, the numerical ratio of displacement to distance for a moving object is equal or
less than 1.

4.From the given v – t graph it can be inferred that the object is

(a) in uniform motion with zero acceleration
(b) at rest
(c) in non-uniform motion
(d) moving with uniform acceleration

5.Area under a v – t graph represents a physical quantity which has the unit
(a) m2
(b) m
(c) m3
(d) m s-1.

6.Suppose a boy is enjoying a ride on a merry-go-round which is moving with a constant

speed of 10 m s~\ It implies that the boy is
(a) at rest
(b) moving with no acceleration
(c) in accelerated motion
(d) moving with uniform velocity

7. Which of the following figures represents uniform motion of a moving object correctly?

8.Slope of a velocity – time graph gives

(a) the distance
(b) the displacement
(c) the acceleration
(d) the speed

9. In which of the following cases of motions, the distance moved and the magnitude of
displacement are equal?
(a) If the car is moving on straight road
(b) If the car is moving in circular path
(c) The pendulum is moving to and fro
(d) The earth is revolving around the sun
10. How will the equations of motion for an object moving with a uniform velocity change?
Solution:
For an object moving with a uniform velocity, acceleration a = 0.
11.A motorcyclist drives from A to B with a uniform speed of 30 km h’1 and returns back
with a speed of 20 km h_1. Find his average speed.

12.The velocity-time graph shows the motion of a cyclist. Find

(i) its acceleration
(ii) its velocity and
(iii) the distance covered by the cyclist in 15 seconds

13. The velocity-time graph of the SUV is given below. The mass of the SUV is 1500 kg.

a) What is the distance traveled by the SUV in the first 2 seconds?

b) What is the braking force at the end of 5 seconds to bring the SUV to a stop
within one second?

14. A car travels 30 km at a uniform speed of 40 km/hr and the next 30 km at a

uniform speed of 20 km/hr. Find its average speed.

15.  A train starting from a railway station and moving with uniform
acceleration attains a speed of 40 km/h in 10 minutes. Find its acceleration.

16. A train travels at a speed of 60 km/h from station A to B and then

comebacks with a speed of 80 km/h from station B to A. Find the average
speed and the average velocity of the train.
17.  An object has moved through a distance. Can it have zero displacement? If yes, support your
answer with an example.

18. Distinguish between i) speed and velocity ii)distance and displacement iii)uniform and non
uniform motion.

19. A bus starting from rest moves with a uniform acceleration of 0.1 m s-2 for 2 minutes. Find (a) the
speed acquired, (b) the distance travelled.

20. A ball is gently dropped from a height of 20 m. If its velocity increases uniformly at the rate of 10
m s-2, with what velocity will it strike the ground? After what time will it strike the ground?

21. Study the speed-time graph of a body given here and answer the following questions:

(a) What type of motion is represented by OA?

(b) What type of motion is represented by AB?

(d) Find out the acceleration of the body.
(e) Calculate the retardation of the body.
(f) Find out the distance travelled by the body from A to B.

y-axis.

Observe the graph carefully and answer the following questions.
