The History of Ultimate Frisbee
1940- The beginning of Frisbee
All starts with the Frisbie’s pie company, with the Yale University at a short distance.
Students used the metal piece throwing to it each other, it worked, but only in short distances.
1948- Creating the disc
Fred Morrison started to desing a disc that flies long distances, and he succeeded. But
the perfect disc just appeared in 1951.
1966-1968- The Sport
But people really started playing ultimate Frisbee around 1966-1968 in Mapplewood,
New Jersey, at Columbia High school when the students present an idea of the ultimate Frisbee
game to the student conseul. The first game took place in 1968 between student conseul and
the staff of the university.
1970- First game between High schools
The first game between highschools took place between Columbia High and Milburn
High, Columbia won 43 to 10.
1971- First Ultimate Conference
The first ultimate conference took place in 1971 which consisted in 5 highschools
including Columbia and Melbourne.
1974- First Frisbee foundation
The first ultimate foundation is founded in Sweden, and in 1975 was founded the
Japanese Frisbee Disc Association. In 1976 the Australian FDA, in 1977 Belgium and Austria FDA,
in 1978 Finland and Danish FDA, and in 1980 the Ultimate Players Association.
1975- First tournament
In april 1975, the Yale University created the first ultimate tournament which consisted
of 8 college teams were the Rugerts won.
1984- World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF)
In 1984 was born the World Flying Disc Federation, which is the one that regulated the
ultimate Frisbee.
2010- American Ultimate Disc League
In 2010, the American Ultimate Disc League was established, which now serves as the
major professional league.
Ultimate Frisbee in the Philippines
In 2002, the game Frisbee was brought to the shores of the Boracay by foreign tourists and
gained a foothold in the Philippines.
One of the leading proponents of Frisbee in the Philippines is Wendell Simbulan who, according
to him, wants the Philippines to be Ultimate Frisbee center in Asia.
Since 2002, the sport has spread throughout the Philippines and young athletes travel around
the country to bond and have fun through this sport.
The Ultimate Frisbee in the country is governed by the Philippine Ultimate Association.
The Philippine Flying Disc Association is known for being the biggest Ultimate community in Asia
and claimed as the highest governing body of all disc-related sports and activities in the
Philippines.
The most popular beach Ultimate team in the Philippines is the Boracay dragons and is even
considered among the best beach Ultimate players in the world. They have finished second
place in the World Beach Ultimate Championships for two consecutive seasons, in Brazil (2007)
and Italy (2011).
The Philippines emerged as the Singapore Ultimate Open 2012 champions, and ranked 7 th out of
15 countries in the 2012 World Ultimate and Guts Championship in Osaka earlier this year.
