LITERARY ANALYSIS OF THE EPIC POETRY HINILAWOD
Since the title literally means "Tales From The Mouth of The Halawod
River", which is in Panay. And in the story the newly formed land was
apportioned to the the 3 brother where they become the ruler of Iloilo, Antique,
and Aklan. The predominant element of Hinilawod is theme since the story is
about the adventures of 3 demigod sons of Alusina a goddess and Paubari a
mortal. The 3 brothers faces supernatural entities in their adventures and
found love. The main character of Hinilawod is the 3 demigod brothers who are
Labaw Dingin, Humadapnin, and Dumadaplap, which are giants and endowed
with superhuman powers, they are the children of Alusina and Paubari. Labaw
Dingin is the eldest, he tried seek for the woman of his dreams but for his last
love he had to fight the lord of darkness Saragnayan, who empowered him and
thrown him into the prison and after years one of his children fought and killed
Saragnayan. His second brother Humadapnin heard what happened to his
brother and set out to punish the people of Saragnayan with his trusted
warrior, when they reach the Umbaw Pinaumbaw they're blocked by a huge
boulder that grows, Humadapnin was able to lift the boulder after wearing his
magic cape and he was awarded with the hand of the princess. Dumalapdap
the 3rd son, set out for the hand of the goddess of the evening breeze, the
palace was guarded by ferocious monsters so he hardly rested after battles, he
returned home with the goddess with his hard earned victory. The formed land
was apportioned between the 3 brothers, Labaw Dingin is the ruler of Iloilo,
Humadapnin is the king of Antique, and Dumalapdap is the lord of Aklan. It is
person vs. supernatural, Labaw Dingin fought with a monster, killed a
hydraheaded, and fought with lord of darkness Saragnayan. Humadapnin was
bewitched by the sorceress, and they've been blocked by a boulder that grows.
Dumalapdap fought with two headed monster and batlike monster. Labaw
Dingin was imprisoned by Saragnayan the lord of darkness and one of his
children fought and killed the lord of the darkness, Buyong Matang-ayon
helped humadapnin to break the spell of the sorceress, and Humadapnin put
on his magic cape to lift the boulder and put it out of the way, Dumalapdap
mortally wounded the batlike monster Ayutang and the ground beneath the
monster quaked and split into 2 swallowing up the monster. The point of view
used in the story is 3rd person, limited because we can see that the thoughts
of the characters are not included in the story. Labaw Dingin set out to find the
woman of his dreams he fought a monster, killed a hydraheaded and fought
the lord of darkness Saragnayan, but he was overpowered by the lord of the
darkness, after years one of his children fought and killed Saragnayan.
Humadapnin set out to punish the people Saragnayan with his trusted warrior
after hearing the maltreatment suffered by his brother. Dumalapdap set out to
win the hand of the goddess of the evening breeze. The time setting for the
action is historical period since it is before newly formed land was apportioned
to the 3 demigods. It is sung for 2 hrs at night for 3 weeks. The story started
with Alusina a goddess that falls in love with a mortal named Paubari, when
their marriage was discovered the gods felt insulted by it, god of plains vowed
to make their life miserable and sent down raging storms and floods to the
couple's kingdom.
The story's climax occurs when Labaw Donggon is imprisoned beneath
Saragnayan. The climax of Hinilawod would be when they exact their
vengeance on Labaw Donggon, who is imprisoned beneath Saragnayan. They
fought for freedom for the sake of Labaw. The falling action is the success of
each of their battles, as well as when they saved Labaw Donggon from
Saragnayan. When Paubari was reunited with his three sons, he prepared a
feast in their honor. After the celebration, the three brothers left for their
respective destinations. Labaw Donggon, Humadapnon, Dumalapdap, and
Datu Paubari went north, south, west, and east, respectively.
Hinilawod was discovered "accidentally" in 1955 by Filipino
anthropologist F. Landa Jocano developed an interest in indigenous folklore.
He and two colleagues traveled the hinterlands of his home island of Panay,
collecting folk songs, stories, and riddles. The plot's events or incidents were
presented in chronological order from beginning to end. I do not identify with
any of the characters because I counsel or seek approval from my parents
before doing things that I enjoy or desire. The villains in the character are the
other suitors who did not approve of Alunsina's choice and plotted to harm her.
Monsters such as Uyutang, the monster with a bat with a poisonous claw, are
also considered villains. Labaw Donggon is the most likely hero in the poem,
but he collects wives, forcing them to face Saragnayan in the end. 'A bat-like
monster with sharp poisonous claws' is an example of figurative speech and a
simile. The moral of Hinilawod is that Labaw Donggon is as morally deficient as
any ordinary Filipino. He isn't an epic hero because he never makes mistakes.
He is an epic hero because, despite making mistakes, he is given a second
chance. His sons' rescue provides him with redemption. Do not give in to the
temptation; doing so will lead to disaster and failure. The religion and rituals of
the ancient people of Sulod would be the theme, demonstrating that ancient
Filipinos believed in the "sacred," the importance of family honor, and personal
courage and dignity.
