Chapter One 1.1back Ground of The Study

This document provides background information on a study investigating the use of tamarind leaves powder as an additive in cement mortar. The objectives are to determine the engineering properties, such as strength and water absorption, of mortar with 2% tamarind leaves powder. The study aims to develop a water-resisting admixture using tamarind leaves powder to reduce water absorption in mortar. This could help enable more affordable mortar options in Africa by utilizing a locally available and inexpensive material. The document outlines the materials that will be used, including cement, tamarind leaves powder, fine aggregate and water. It also describes the mixing proportions, curing method, and laboratory tests that will evaluate the fresh and hardened properties of

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION
1.1Back ground of the study
The water cement ratio is important part of mortar composition where the effect of
Admixtures added for the purpose of introducing a water resisting agent in mortar
production to determine the absorption of water and obtainment of sufficient
workability of fresh mortar is reflected.
Therefore, through the mortar strength is influenced with expected increase of
resulting values.
The reduction of water absorption influences the mortar production, also mortar
microstructures having substantial effect on mechanical behavior of the mortar.
The cement minimum amount is defined by environment effect class and
maximum efficiency. The water cement ratio is expressed by ratio of effective
water content to cement in fresh mortar.
In present concreting building general practice the water cement ratio moves
within 1:3, 1:4, 1:5, 1:6, 1:7, 1:8 depending on the type and effect of added
Admixtures and required consistency of fresh mortar. While in the case of this
study 2% tamarind leaves powder will be added. Low water cement ratios that may
get under 0.25 is use namely with new modern type of mortar, characterized with
very compact and consistent structure which is obtained using very effective
Admixtures enabling reduction of water absorbance in mortar. Masonry mortar is
defined as the mixture of binders (organic and non-organic), fillers and water,
which hardened as a result of chemical or physical reactions occurring with the
binder. Sometimes, literature offers additional information that mortars serves the
purpose of bonding masonry unit into a stable masonry structure. This could be
implied if mortar firmly joints two masonry unit together; its suitable for general
use.
1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
The aim of this study as to develop tamarind leaves powder as water resisting
Admixture in cement mortar. Resistance admixture are used to prevent water from
penetrating in to sated mortar by slowing down the penetration process after the
mortar work was done. However most resisting admixture available in the market
are expensive. Thereby making them out of reach for small consumer of mortar in
Africa are expensive not ready available. TLP contain essential minerals and
nutrients like content of TLP are and iron was investigated as water reducing
admixture.

1.3Aim and objectives of the study

The main aim of this research work is to determine engineering properties of
mortar incorporating tamarind leaves powder as additive in mortar production
The main objectives are as follows
 To determine the engineering properties such as strength and water
absorption of mortar with 2% tamarind leaves powder
 To determine the effect of TLP addition in the cement mortar matrix.

1.4Scope and Limitation of the Study

The scope of this project is to find the engineering properties of mortar with 2%
tamarind leaves powder in line use of local materials in order to produce low cost
building materials; this research work is intended to provide information about
locally used mortar and to introduce new types of mortars in local building
industry. Lack of adequate equip facilities and equipment to carry out some
practical.

1.5Justification of the study

This research work will help in the utilization of tamarind leaves powder as green
construction material for sustainable development as well as improvement of
literature.
CHAPTER THREE
MATERIALS AND METHOD
3.1 Introduction
This chapter highlight the materials (cement, tamarind leaves powder, fine
aggregate and water) used in this research study. The mixing proportion and
procedure as well as curing method (ponding) are explained. Also, the
methodology flow chart of the study, laboratory experimental works such as fresh
mortar test (workability); hardened TLP cement-sand matrix test (density,
compressive and flexural strength) and durability property (water absorption test)
are presented.
3.2 Materials
Materials used in this study were selected and prepared in accordance to standards
and codes of practices relevant to each material use. The material includes fine
aggregate (FA), tamarind leaves powder (TLP) Ordinary Portland cement and
water.
