Solution

CASE A: State Of Exchange Writer

This problem may occur if the MS Exchange Writer, Microsoft Exchange Replica Writer and/or the System State Writer is
not in a stable State.

Volume Shadow Copy Service Administrative command-line tool can be used to check the Writers state.

C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe

C:\>vssadmin list writers

vssadmin 1.0 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool

Writer name: 'Microsoft Exchange Writer'

Writer Id: {76fe1ac4-15f7-4bcd-987e-8e1acb462fb7}

Writer Instance Id: {e2505d63-d95b-46ff-8f8e-e30981631ff6}

State: [1] Stable

Last error: No error

The State of the 'Microsoft Exchange Writer' must be listed as 'Stable'. If the State is not 'Stable' then please contact
Microsoft technical support for assistance.

If the MS Exchange Writer state is in 'Stable' status it may indicate a more serious problem requiring CA Technical Support
assistance.

CASE B: Simultaneous Exchange Backups

This problem may occur when the target Database to be backed up by ARCserve is simultaneously being backed up by
another application such as Windows Server Backup or another third-party backup software.

Microsoft Exchange Server does not support simultaneous database backup of the same database. The Windows Event
Viewer Application log can be used to verify and identify the backup source; to locate the backup source, search for 'ESE'
and 'MSExchangeIS' event source entries.

To resolve this problem, the database backups must be scheduled to run at different times.

CASE C: CA ARCserve Agent for Microsoft Exchange Timeout Settings.

This problem may also occur if the Exchange Database Agent 'Retry Delay' and 'Retry Counter' times out while trying to
retrieve data from the Exchange server. In some scenarios the Database backup may fail on the first backup attempt, and
then be successful on subsequent backup attempts (Makeup job, Custom job..etc.).

The default Retry Counter value is 2; acceptable values are 0 to 10.

The default Retry Delay value is 20 (seconds); acceptable values are 0 to 60.

To view the 'Retry Counter' and 'Retry Delay' value settings:

A. On the Microsoft Exchange server, run the ARCserve Backup Agent Admin from the ARCserve Backup group

(Click Start -> All Programs -> CA ->ARCserve Backup -> Backup Agent Admin)

B. Select 'CA ARCserve Backup Exchange Agent' from the drop down [upper right] in the ARCserve Backup Agent
Admin window.

C. Click on Options pull down menu and select Configuration.

D. The Database Agent Configuration menu will now be display with both Retry Counter and Retry Delay value
settings.

To resolve this problem, increase one or both Retry values.
