INTRODUCTION
The SMP Portable Electromagnetic Field Monitoring System can measure electromagnetic field levels generated by any source within the frequency range of the probe attached to the system. For example it can measure fields generated by different sources such as mobile telephone base stations, radio and television transmitters and repeaters, DECT systems, Wi-Fi systems, etc. Those measurements can be made quickly and easily anywhere because the SMP is portable and simple to handle and use. The SMP can sample the field level continuously and store that data automatically in its built-in memory at user-configured intervals with a capacity of up to 62,000 samples. The data stored in the memory can easily be downloaded to a computer via a USB port for later processing. The SMP is also available with a built-in GPS receiver to allow each measurement to be associated automatically with the geographic location where it was taken.

Functions
This section describes the main functions of the SMP, in addition to instantaneous measurement of the electromagnetic field. 5.6.1 Memorisation of measurements
One of the main functions of the SMP is storage of measurements in memory for later study or processing. The memory of the SMP allows storage of up to 62,400 points of memory without positioning information, and up to 27,300 points when storing the GPS data. The memory is organised into registers of measurements corresponding to the different memorisations. The maximum number of registers is 100. Before memorisation is started, the parameters for the memorisation interval, type of average and average interval must be configured via the configuration menu. The field and average field data will be stored in the unit selected for the measurement. To start memorisation, press the Log/RD button on the main screen. When memorisation is started, the device automatically creates a new measurement register. The Create new register field appears indicating the ID number of the register and the user is prompted to enter a Name for the register. The name is entered using the arrows and it is validated by pressing Enter. When Enter is pressed again in response to the prompt Ready to measure? memorisation of the new register starts. Entry of a name for each register created is not strictly necessary, since each register has a unique ID number. However, naming registers is advisable since it facilitates identification of the measurements stored in each register. To stop memorisation, press the Log/RD key again. If the memorisation reaches the maximum number of points of memory , the memorisation will be stopped automatically. To store positional information along with the field data, the GPS receiver must be enabled when memorisation is commenced. If the position given by the GPS is invalid, the positional data will be saved with a value of 0 The GPS cannot be enabled or disabled during the measurement storage process. The GPS enable/disable option is blocked on the configuration menu during storage. While making a memorisation some functions of the SMP are disabled: It is not possible to change the device configuration through the configuration screen, nor to access the memorised data screen. 5.6.2 Calculation of averages
The SMP can calculate 2 types of average of the value of the electromagnetic field:
1.
Arithmetic average: The arithmetic average of the values of the field measured during the measurement interval defined via the configuration menu:
Arithmetic average =
Samples
Number of samples
- 15 -
The SMP samples the field twice per second and so for an average interval of 10s, for example, the SMP will calculate the average each 10s of the 20 samples taken twice per second.
2.
Sliding average: The arithmetic average of a window of average_interval x 2 samples that is moved twice each second. In other words, twice each second a new sample enters the window and the oldest sample leaves the window. The main difference between this average and the arithmetic average is that the sliding average is updated twice per second (although it is shown on the screen once per second) rather than every average_interval seconds.
In both cases, the average is only calculated when a memorisation is started. When the memorisation is started, the value of the average will not be valid (it will be displayed as 0) until the first average_interval seconds have passed. The value of the average can be reset using the Reset/max/min/avg. option on the configuration screen. 5.6.3 IS measurement
The IS measurement corresponds to the most common setup as specified in International Standards. That measurement allows an average to be taken of the field values measured every second over 6 minutes at a given place without the presence of the technician affecting the result. To make this type of measurement, select Average type = IS on the configuration screen. Average interval = 6m and Log interval = 1s will be selected automatically. Under those conditions, when the Log/RD is pressed: The apparatus will wait 10s before starting the measurement to allow the technician to move away. After the 10s, a beep will indicate the start of the measurement. 2. It will take a measurement once per second for six minutes, storing the values in the selected register. 3. At the end of the 6 minutes, the measurement will be stopped automatically and the alarm will sound. The apparatus will calculate the average, display it on the screen and store it in memory.
1.
An IS measurement can be cancelled at any time by pressing the Log/RD key. 5.6.4 Maximum and minimum field
The SMP can show the maximum and minimum field obtained in a measurement on the screen. Those values are only updated when a memorisation is made and they are reset by using the option Reset/max/min/avg. on the configuration screen. 5.6.5 Alarm
The alarm function is very useful for the technician who makes the measurements because it allows the apparatus to give an audible warning when the field exceeds a threshold value
- 16 -
defined on the configuration screen. The alarm will only sound if the alarm function has been activated using the Alarm key. 5.6.6 GPS
The SMP is available with a built-in latest-generation GPS SiRFstarIII receiver, allowing you to display and memorise the position of the device when taking measurements. The incorporation of SiRFstarIII functions makes the receiver extremely sensitive and precise, allowing exact positioning even in built-up areas with poor satellite visibility. The GPS is enabled/disabled through the configuration menu as explained in section 5.3. When it is enabled, the main screen displays the message Searching for satellites, along with a number indicating the number of satellites found. When the position obtained by the receiver is valid, the data for latitude, longitude and altitude are displayed on the screen. The best position for the device for finding satellites is vertical, with the GPS antenna pointing upwards. Enabling the GPS increases power consumption by the device and reduces its autonomy. It is important to keep it switched off when it is not in use to avoid unnecessary drain on the battery.
- 17 -
The SMP contains a rechargeable Li-ion battery allowing the apparatus to run for over 10 hours *. The level of battery charge can be checked at any time on the main screen of the apparatus, in the Battery field. Li-ion batteries have no memory effect and so there is no need to discharge the battery fully. In fact it is best to avoid allowing the battery to run down completely because that can shorten its useful life considerably. It is important to take the following precautions: Always switch the apparatus off when it is not in use. Recharge the battery regularly (for example, once a month) if the apparatus goes for long periods without being used.
The battery of the SMP should be recharged when the battery indicator shows that it is at its minimum level: When it reaches that level the battery will still allow the apparatus to run for 30 minutes, but after it is switched off, it might not be possible to switch it on again. The battery charge time is 45 hours. The procedure for charging the battery is: 1) Insert the connector of the battery charger into the connector of the SMP. 2) Plug the charger into an electrical outlet (220 V AC). The recharge LED will light up. If it does not light up, it means that the charger is not connected properly. 3) The level of charge of the battery can be checked directly in the Battery field of the main screen. The battery charge time is 45 hours. 4) The charge is complete when the recharge LED starts flashing. Unplug the charger from the mains and then disconnect it from the SMP. The SMP has a Li-ion battery charge controller and so you can leave the apparatus charging for more than the specified 5 hours with no danger of damaging the battery. The apparatus can be used while the battery is being charged. All the functions will be available. The battery will function normally at temperatures ranging from -20C to +45C. However, we recommend avoiding low temperatures to prevent its useful life from being shortened.
Only the battery charger supplied by Wavecontrol should be used to recharge the battery of the SMP.

7.2
SMP Reader is a very simple program. Its purpose is to connect the PC to the SMP to download the data stored in its registers. In order to be able to download the data, the SMP must be connected to the PC with a USB cable and the Data over USB option must be disabled.
On the main screen, the Connect button allows communication with the device to start. The software detects the presence of the SMP connected to the PC and it reads the registers of measurements available in the devices memory. It provides the following information for each register: ID number, name (Name), time and date (Date), number of samples (Samples), type of measurement (Type), the probe used to take the measurement (Probe) and lastly, whether or not the measurements contain GPS positioning data. If the software is unable to communicate with the SMP, check the connection between the PC and the SMP. Ensure that the USB Serial Port associated with the SMP figures on the list of COM ports. To do so, go to Start / Control Panel / System / Hardware / Device Manager / Ports (COM & LTP). If the USB Serial Port does not appear on the list of COM ports, disconnect the USB cable and then reconnect it. You can select the registers to be downloaded by means of the selection box to the left of each register. Pressing the Download Selected Register button starts the download, with the name of the file indicated by the user. A file is created for each register of measurements and it is assigned the name indicated_file_name register_ID register_name.csv. The downloaded files will be text files with the CSV format, containing the different samples on separate lines and data for each sample separated by a semi-colon. The first 8 lines comprise the heading, with information on the software, the device, the probe and the measurement parameters.
