LECTURE AND EXAMPLE OF FEATURE WRITING

A feature article is a type of writing that provides additional information about a particular topic,
person, place, event, or anything that is interesting and important for readers. Its aim is to
deliver detailed information, personal experiences, and perspectives from various angles to
showcase details and important points related to the topic.

To write a feature article, the writer needs to have a broad knowledge of the subject. In-depth
research and organization of information are necessary to create a comprehensive article.

Here are some steps that can be followed to begin writing a feature article:

Choose a topic or theme. You may choose a topic or theme that has a broad scope or one that
is more specific and caters to the interests of the readers.

Think of a headline. Create a headline that will capture the interest of the readers and show
intriguing information about the topic.

Create an outline. Create an outline that contains the main points and information that should
be included in the article.

Conduct research. This involves conducting interviews, collecting information from reliable
sources, observing, and more.

Write a draft. Create a draft that contains all the information, perspectives, and details about the
topic.

Make it compelling. Use stories or personal experiences, pictures, and other tools to make the
article more compelling.
Review and edit. Read and review the article to ensure that there are no grammatical errors and
that the ideas are presented properly.

Publish. Publish the article in a newspaper, magazine, or online platform to reach the readers.

In writing a feature article, detailed information and personal experiences are important to
showcase the interesting topic and attract readers. Knowledge in technical aspects of writing,
such as the use of good vocabulary, coherence of ideas, and proper structure, is also essential.

Here is an example of a feature article:

Title: Life as an Overseas Filipino Worker

The life of an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) is a story of sacrifice, courage, and resilience.
Many Filipinos leave their families and country behind to work in foreign lands, hoping to provide
a better future for their loved ones.

According to data from the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), there are
approximately 10 million Filipinos working abroad as of 2021. They work in various industries,
including healthcare, engineering, education, and domestic work.

Despite the challenges of being away from home, OFWs continue to work hard and adapt to
their new environments. They face language barriers, cultural differences, and homesickness,
but they persevere and remain positive.

One OFW, Jennifer, works as a nurse in the United States. She shares that her work allows her
to provide for her family and also helps her improve her skills and knowledge in her field.
However, she admits that being away from her husband and children is difficult, especially
during special occasions and important milestones.
Another OFW, Mark, works as a construction worker in Dubai. He shares that the experience has
taught him to become more independent and resourceful. He adds that despite the challenges,
he is grateful for the opportunity to work abroad and earn a higher salary compared to what he
can earn in the Philippines.

The life of an OFW is not easy, but their sacrifices and hard work bring hope and a brighter
future for their families. They continue to inspire us with their courage, resilience, and
unwavering determination to provide a better life for their loved ones.
