RECOMMENDED READING:
• Keuris, Marisa. 1996. The play: a manual. Pretoria: JL van Schaik Publishers.
• Any of the primary texts listed on pp. 9-10 of this letter.
ASSESSMENT:
Students’ answers are evaluated by taking the following aspects into consideration:
• If the theoretical discussion and analysis of the chosen text are presented
in a balanced manner, i.e. students must first discuss the theoretical issues
asked in the question and then apply this theory to their chosen example.
• Length of answers: the following guidelines can be kept in mind:
• Approximately half a page (typed) for 5 marks,
• Approximately one page (typed) for 10 marks,
• Approximately one and a half page (typed) for 15 marks,
• Approximately two to three pages (typed) for 20 marks.
• Answers must be structured logically, and your formulations must be given
clearly and succinctly.
• The language used in the assignment, e.g. is it free of grammatical and
spelling errors? Are the references correctly given? (See the Plagiarism
Guide under “Additional Resources” on myUnisa if you are unsure about
referencing your sources.)

The Play by Prof Marisa Keuris is recommended reading for this module. We do, however,
highly recommend that you buy this book. Students will also be able to use the book in the
second level module (THL2602). Students who want to buy this book can order it from any
academic bookseller or order it from www.takealot.com. A number of copies are also
available in the Unisa library (main campus).
Study one of the plays listed on pp. 9-10 in the tutorial letter 101 or any story of your
choice and answer the questions that follow.
QUESTION 1 (a)
Write a short introduction (approximately 5 typed sentences) in which you outline how
your essay will discuss the theoretical concepts involved in analysing the written text of
play and how various elements, for example characters, objects and events are
represented on stage. (6)
OR
QUESTION 1 (b)
What is the performance orientation of a written dramatic text, and how is the text
converted into a performance? Use a play of your choice to illustrate how theoretical
concepts can be used to analyse a play. (6)
AND
QUESTION 1 (c)
Write an essay in which you discuss the theoretical concepts that can be used to analyse
the way in which dramatic texts are converted into a performance. Describe this process
by analysing a play (s) of your choice. (9)
OR
QUESTION 1 (d)
Analyse a play/s of your choice to illustrate how theatrical conventions can be traced in a
written text. (9)
QUESTION 2 (a)
Discuss one example from a play in which the occurrence of an event is described in the
stage directions and/or in the dialogue. First state what the event is and indicate at which
point it occurs within the dramatic structure. How is it described in the written play and
how does it affect the temporal structure of the play? (10)
AND
Question 2 (b)
Analyse a play and illustrate how certain events indicate the commencement,
development and conclusion of the temporal structure. How are these events represented
in the stage directions and the dialogue? (10)
