Safe Distance

This document calculates safe distances for workers and the public from an isotope source without and with a collimator. Without a collimator, the safe distances are 144.91 m for workers and 354.96 m for the public based on an activity of 12.6 Ci. With a tungsten collimator of 16.5 mm thickness, the safe distances are reduced to 25.50 m for workers and 62.45 m for the public due to a reduced activity of 0.39 Ci passing through the collimator. The safe distances are valid for one week from July 29 to August 4, 2022.

ISOTOPE SAFE DISTANCE CALCULATION WITH AND WITHOUT COLLIMATOR FOR WORKERS AND PUBLIC

*Note: Annual dose limit 20 mSv/y SOURCE NO: 6988

Without collimator
Basic safe distance calculation base on isotope activity

𝐼𝑜 × 0.5 × 1000
𝐷𝑜 =
𝐼𝑃

Where,

𝐷𝑜 = distance in meter (m)

𝐼𝑜 = current activity in R/hr/m
𝐼𝑃 = activity allowed for Workers (0.3mR/hr)/Public (0.05mR/hr)

Today activity = 12.6 Ci Date: 29 JULY 2022

Safe Distance for Workers and Public without collimator is:

WORKER: PUBLIC:

12.6 × 0.5 × 1000 12.6 × 0.5 × 1000

𝐷𝑜 =  = 𝟏𝟒𝟒. 𝟗𝟏𝐦 𝐷𝑜 =  = 𝟑𝟓𝟒. 𝟗𝟔𝐦
0.3 0.05

With collimator
Collimator type : Tungsten
Collimator thickness : 16.5mm

To find number of layer (n) for lead with following formula:

Half Value Layer for collimator is 3.3 mm.

Hence;
t 16.5
n= = =5
HVL 3.3

Activity after passing collimator, 𝐼𝑜 :

𝐼𝑜 12.6
𝐼𝑛 = 𝑛
= 5 = 0.39 𝑐i
2 2
Hence;

Safe Distance for Workers and Public with collimator is

WORKER: PUBLIC:

0.39 × 0.5 × 1000 0.39 × 0.5 × 1000

𝐷𝑜 =  = 𝟐𝟓. 𝟓𝟎𝐦 𝐷𝑜 =  = 𝟔𝟐. 𝟒𝟓𝐦
0.3 0.05

**NOTE : SAFE DISTANCE IS VALID FOR ONE WEEK (29/07/2022-04/08/2022)
