AND MAGIC

‘of this religion centers on she study of the Tao of Shinse,

rexton, both religions exist simultaneously without any
great degree of conllict. Most Rokugsni combine aspects
fof both the Tao and ehe Way of the Gods in thetr life,
Sometimes without even realiaing thatthe wo are infact
distinctly different bodies of worship.
‘The Tao is comprised of the religious teschings of
Shinsei, recorded by the Kami Shiba at the dawn of
the Empire, This aspect of Kokugani religion is mostly
practiced by monks belonging to the Brotherhood of
Shinset. Shintao (ox Shinseism; both terms are uted
interchangeaby) is aphilosophy ofenlightenmens through

SHUGERTA
‘As derailed in Rokupan only cerain individuals are fit 1 beat
the mantle of the shugenja, Those who prove capable of
communicating with the kami ate treasured commodities of
the clan, and are always given the finest education. The birth
of shugenja follows distinct bloodlines for the most part,
and each Great Clan has atleast one farily that is song in
‘magic. Occasionally shugenja are born outside of these
families. Sbugen‘a are rarely born outside the samurai caste
‘When this does happen, it is usually the result of ronin
intermingling with peasants or samurai who cannot keep
their affairs discreet Individuals with the gift of magic are
usually offered training with a shugenja school, possibly one
‘of many small ronin schools settered about the Eropire
‘Those who possess the ability w command the kami but do
not enter shugenja training are almost nonexistent. When
this happens, itis usually a result of ignorance of one's true
potential rather than a consclous act. The gift of magic is
sacred. An individual who knows he possesses magic and does
ot seek training in its use is essentially turning his back on
‘he kami a disrespectful and blasphemous act.

SHUGENTA AND
AMULTICLASSING
Unlike most other spelleasting classes, maintaining one's abil-
ities asa shugenja requires an extraordinary amount of focus
Without unusual talent (embodied in the Chosen By the
Kami and Steady Soul fea's found in Rokugen™), a shugenje
‘cannot learn the ways of another character clacs and later
continue to develop his mastery over elemental magic
The kami are not jealous masters; they are in fact rather indi
ferent toward mortals much of the time. Knowing how to
please them, how to hold their attention, is a demanding and
< ‘ever-changing ar. It is theit very indifference that requires 2
shugenja to focus o intensely. By turning his own attention 0
‘other things, he loses the attention ofthe naturally fickle and
enigmatic kam:
Asrare as multiclass shugenja may be, they are not enttely
tunheard of Depending on their class, a multiclass shugenja
can fulfill variety of roles. The following section briefly
details the likelihood of different possible combinations,
and their role within the Empire,
THE WARRIOR CLASSES (BERSERKER,
FIGHTER, 2ANGER, SAMURAD
Most shuxenja consider the warrior lifestyle crude. It 100.
absorbed in the physical and detached from the spiritual for
their taste. Occasionally Kuni shugenja take levels asa fighter
so thar they might become more capable deferlersol the Car-
penter Wall, or Moto shugenja become bersethers so that they
might be better able to fight beside their brethren, Those who
embark on such careers are viewed with respect and admira
tion by their kin, buc are met with disdain by shugenja of
purer” clans. These shugenja usually focus upon the wrathfal
spirits of earth and fire, and are as dangerous as the powers
they represent. They generally lead eventful, if brief, lives
Most shugenja look upon the role of ranger with similar
distaste, with the exceptions found most often among the
Unicom and Fox clans, Both of these clans have a close
connection to nature. For these individuals learning the skills
of a ranger is seen as a broadening of one’s awareness of the
world rather than an chandonment oft (Rangers in Rokugan
normally do not have spellcasting abilities unless they
originate from certain clans or races. At the DM's option,
ranger/shugenja who have taken the Chosen by the Kam feat
‘may gain ranger spells normally due to their association with
the kar
Shugenja may not take levels ssa samurst This i not due to
any disrespect between samurai and shugenja. Quite the
opposite is tru; samurai and shugenja flfll wo very differ
ent roles in the Celestial Order, roles that must be kept dis
tinctly separate. Even the kami recognize this Those born to
samurai families with the power to call upon the ancestral
daisho never hear the call to become shugenja. In a way,
they already possess their own command over the kami that
dowel within their blades,
MONKS AND INKYO
Of all shugenja class combinations, these are the most
common as well as the most respected. The enlightened
nature of these classes mixes well with the spiritual
focus needed to become shugen|a. Monk/shugenja and
inkyo/shugenja revere the teachings of Shinsei and
the blessings of the Fortunes in equal measure, and are often
mediators berween the Brotherhood and the temples of the
seat shugenja families. Sometimes they guard the grea tm-
ples of shugenja families
Some among the Brotherhood playfully chide these indi-
viduals for their lack of focus, remaking that “one cannot row
‘two boats and still reach the end ofthe river” Shugenja of
‘pearly any elemental focus make excellent monks and inkyo.
ROGUES AND nunsA
‘This combination is extremely unusual. As the arts of stealth
and infilcration usually lead to dishonorable behavior,
togue/shugenja are frowned upon. Ninja/shugenja — those
who use their magic to assist in assassination — are seen a3
‘uttight abominations. Ever those clans that are known to
make Frequent use of spies and assassins (such asthe Scorpion
and the Mantis) deny that they would taln their shugenja in
such ar,
‘With tbat sad, keep in mind that a character true cass is
hardly a matter of public knowledge, and a person with
mastery of both stealth and magic would be quite adepe at
hiding his true capabilities. Such an individual would be an
asset to his clan, if he could keep his training a secret
Shugenja with focus in air are drawn to these classes more
than any other.
covatiss
Shugenja with elemental focus in ait or water take easily to
the life ofa courtier, using their magic to grant favors or gain
information on theit rivals. This combination is often seen
among the Doji and Soshi families The daimyo of major fms
lies usually have atleast one “court shugenja’ about. Ostenst
bly this individuals duty sto invoke the blessings of the kart
‘upon the house; in reality,» court shugenja also provides pro-
tection from hostile magic and information about his lordsOTHER CLASSES
‘Character classes other than these are not typically a pat of
okuganisociery.Ifsuch a person were to undergo taining as
a shugenja, they would be a combination unique unto
themselves, and would require special attention and
consideration. In particular, other spellcasting classes
Combined with shugenja would ralse interesting questions
concerning that character's outlook on magic, especially
regarding how they would struggle to combine their
divergent mystical philosophies
F_SHUGENTA'S
ROLE AS SAMURAI
‘Though the character class ofthe Rokugani warriors indeed
called a samurai the title of “samurai” is properly « social
position rather than the word for a warrior in service.
[Ashugenjaisalsoa part ofthis eamurat caste,a member of the
noble and ruling families of Rokugan. He is expected to
hehave as such, though not to the exact degree of a bush
warrior. In many cases, a shugenjais simply a cloistered
Scholae and prest, spending his days in meditation and ricual
in some remote temple or monastery. However, player
characters ate the exception to this. So how are shugenja
expected to behave, both in contrast with and comparison t0
bushi, the warriors of Rokugan?
BUSHIDO
‘Bushido literally means the “way of the warrior” Though +
shugenja can bring himself to carry a karana, and even fight
With one, bes nota warrior by Rokugani standards. Though +
shugenja can stand beside his bushi brethren in bale and lay
tenemies low with hie magic, he is not the same as one who
spends his entre life studying the art of Elling with the blade.
Despite this, Shinsei taught thar there was wisdom in
[Akodo’s principles — bushido, They lead to a life of clean
rind, body, spirit, and honor The virtues of bushido are fol
owed by many shugenja, though they need not follow them
with the same fervor as an honorable bushi. A shugenia’ typi
cal viewpoint ofthe virtues of bushido is encapsulated below
Rei (Polite Courtesy) — A bushi is courteous because itis
polite. Those ofthe samurai class are expected o be cultured,
feducared, and of superior demeanor to commoners and
barbarians. A shugenja has even mate ofa reason tobe polite
than does his katans wielding brother. When one interacts
Heavenly forces daily, amore complete sense of humility
nd the resulting courteous demeanor results. Though three
Feet of steel can ill in a single stroke, the fury of lightning
storm can be suramoned by an unarmed shugenja. All schol-
ars in Rokugan agree that the reverence for the virtue of
roi keeps the Empires much safer place.
‘Yu (Heroic Courage) — This is perhaps the virtue in
which bushi and shugenja dilfer the most. Shugen)a are not
bred for war, and courage tn Rokugan is most often displayed
by hurling oneself inco deadly combat with little hesitation.
hugenja, asa ale, cend to avoid combat, and even those who
are prepared for auch things donor spent much time in melee.
Though some bushi call such action ‘cowarily” enlightened
‘warriors understand ics not the shugenjl place wo wage wat

comprehend.
Meyo (Honor) — All members of the noble class are
taught from birch that their honoris worth mote chan thei
lives. Shuganja are no differen inthis than their bush coun-
terparts However, a8 they commune with the spirits of the
clements and Heavens every day, a shugenja must answer to
different concepts of honor than his bushi kin. Greater
tlemental spirits judge a shugenja on their own terms of
hhonor,as do supernatural creatures in the Empire. Ashugenja,
must often walk a fine line between maintaining the mortal
and immortal views of honor, though they rarely are
cexcremely divergent.
Jin (Compassion) — Almost no shugenja is trained to lll
asa bushi is Though many are trained in the ways of combat
tnd the application of thelr gifts in warfare, chese ats are
rarely sessed in a shugenja training. Even the warlike Kuni
and Tamor know thac their gift is more powerful when turned
to things other than open destruction and_ chaos,
fad learn to cherish that part of the ability. Asa result of the
shugenjas meditations and conscant exposure to Shinseis Tao,
the average shugenja is far more compassionate than the
average bushi.
“Makoto (Complete Sincerity) — A shugenja can some-
times be seen as serving two daimyo — those in the world of
mortals, and those in the realm ofthe supernatural, Though
bushi is expected to speak with complete sincerity on behalf
‘of himself and his daimyo, a shugenjas word carries far more
‘weight simply because ofthe powers be commands. A very
‘srall percentage ofthe Empize bas the gift of speaking to the
Tkamisand those few are relied upon to be honest mediators
between man and spirit. Those shugenja found ro be abusing
this trust are often tected wrth harsh reprisal
Chugo (Duty and Loyalty) — Like « bushi, a sbugenja
must kiow his duty, and is expected to perform it. That i the
basis of the whole caste system of Rokugan, and no one is
allowed exception. This is perhaps the one virtue in bushido
thats exactly the sume for both shugenja and bushi. Though a
shugenja must understand and obey the will of the kar, he s
absolutely loyal to his daimyo first. A shugenja understands
the way of religion, but it snot his place to ultimately decide
‘what course of action to rake. Though some shugenja are advi
sors and can make thei differing opinions known ifthe need
arises inthe end they must bow to the ord will
