• OBJECTIVES:
1. Identify the different terms used to protect ones safety online
2. Appreciate the tips to stay safe online

CONTENT:

Cyber security or IT security, is the protection of information systems from theft or damage to the hardware, the
software, and to the information on them, as well as from disruption or misdirection of the services they provide.

Correspondingly online safety or internet safety is defined as the user’s knowledge of maximizing personal
safety and security risks to private information and property associated with using the internet, and the self-
protection from computer crime in general.

• Organizations and people that use computers can describe their needs for information security, for data security,
They are usually trying to protect some resources against danger from an attacker. The resource is usually either
information or money. To secure your data, the following must be done:

1. Regularly back-up server data and keep back-up data secure and only available to authorized personnel.

2. As with desktop PCs, servers need a firewall, regular updates and anti-virus software.

3. Although there are ways to physically protect your laptop or other portable devices, there is no guarantee that
they will not be stolen or lost.

4. Controlling who gets to read information, how information changes or resources are used.

5. Provide prompt access to information and resources and know who had access to information or resources.

Tips to Stay Safe Online

1. Be mindful of what you share online and what site you share it to.

2. Do not just accept terms and conditions; read it.

3. Check out the privacy policy page of a website to learn how the website handles the information you share.

4. Know the security features of the social networking sites you use. By keeping your profile picture private, search
engines will not be able to scan your profile.

5. Do not share your password with anyone.

6. Avoid logging into public networks/Wi-Fi. Browsing in “incognito” or private mode, a feature of a browser, will note
protect you from hackers.

7. Do not talk to strangers whether online or face-to-face.

8. Never post anything about a future vacation. It is similar to posting, “Rob my house at this date”.

9. Add friends you know in real life.

10. Avoid visiting untrusted websites

11. Install and update an anti-virus software to avoid conflicts.

12. If you have a Wi-Fi at home, make it a private network by adding a password.
13. Avoid downloading anything from untrusted websites. You are most vulnerable in peer-to-peer downloads
(torrents) as the download is most likely not monitored by the site owner.

14. Buy the software; do not use pirated once.

15. Do not reply or click links from suspicious emails.

• ACTIVITY

Share your ideas in the concept of “Think Before You Click” through writing an essay. The essay must have
introduction, body and conclusion. (Use the Word Processing Skills)
