INTRODUCTION
Cucumber (Cucumis Sativus) are among the most widely gown
vegetable crops the all over the world. Like many other cucurbits, they usually
are monoecious, bearing staminate and pistillate flowers on the same plant.
As cucumbers begin flowering quickly, within 6 or 7 weeks after sowing, and
as the fruits are harvested when immature, about 7-10 days past anthesis,
they are early bearing and easy to grow. Moreover cucumber is better
adapted to low temperatures than most cucurbit taxa and it is widely popular
in cool temprature regions, where it is more successfully grown than
cucurbits.
Although cucumbers are most often confused vegetable melons, they
have some obvious differences that allow distinguishing between them, even
with meagre descriptions. Cucumbers are glabrous and young melons are
hispid. Cucumber are always elongate and warted but the combination of fruit
elongation and wartiness in melons is rare. Moreover, the warts of
cucumbers, but ot melos, are capped with short, hard spines; these spines,
however, slough off upon handling and processing. Cucumbers tend to
narrow toward the stylar end whereas snake melons tend to broaden and,
moreover, can reach lengths far exceeding those of cucumbers (Paris et al,.
2011).
Fermented Plant Juice (FPJ) is another oft-used Natural Farming input.
It can be made in the following way. Collect plants that have defences against
the cold and that grow well in the spring. Other good plants to use are ones
that are the fast-growing and vigorous (these contain very active growth
hormones). Bamboo shoots can be used; collect them while small, and
remove the soil but the outer skin. Other good plants to use for FPJ are
strawberry, kiwi or cucumber (use lateral buds of cucumber; it grows quickly,
though it is not very tolerant of cold and disease). For cucumber, cut 50 cm
above …roots during last part of harvest season, then hung cucumber’s stem
upside down in a bottle. Juice will seep out. It is said to last for three years.
1
Banana sprouts/shoots and morning glory (Ipomea aquatic) are also good
ones to use.

Theoretical Framework
Fertilizers are widely used in agriculture to maintain soil fertility and to
oincrease crop yields. Fertilizers is any organic or inorganic material of natural
or synthetic origin that is applied through soil or leaves to the plants to supply
nutrients essential to the growth and productivity. Before the green revolution,
natural and traditional farming methods were adopted for cultivation, which
involved natural methods of maintaining soil fertility and controlling crop pets.
Consequently, upon green revolution commendable agricultural production
has been achieved mainly due to increased use of chemical fertilizers,
pesticides and farm machinery. Fertilizers facilitated higher yields on less crop
area than without the use of fertilizer; therefore, they are considered important
elements in worldwide food production. As the population continues to grow,
more and more agricultural output will be required, and fertilizers will play a
vital role (Clark and Kelly, 2004).
Soil is vital natural, resource on which life supporting system of a country
and the socio-economic development of its people depends. Soil provide
food, fodder and fuel to meet the basic needs of human and animal. Use of
fertilizer and manures is a key factor to sustain fertility of the soil. Fertilizers
being a costly input, the scientific approach towards the profitable agriculture
would imply the supplemental use of plant nutrients according to the actual
need of the situation (Agboola and Ray, 1994; Vincent et al., 2005).
The major reason for the widespread occurrence of deficiency of
micronutrients is the low availability of micronutrients to plant roots rather than
their low concentration in soil. To reduce reactions and precipitation of
4
micronutrients and maintain them in soluble form in soil, chelation of these
nutrients with chelating agents is the only solution. Chelating agents or
chelators are organic compounds that bind the metals, avoid their
precipitation in soil thus increase their water solubility and plant availability
(Wallace, 1963).

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
This chapter provides an overview regarding Fermented Plant Juice (FPJ)
being used as a fertilizer on plants. This also deals with the research design
and the conceptual framework for the quantitative, experimental study that
contains the main focus that was discussed in this study and to fully
understand the research done.
Organic Fertilizers and its Benefits
Organic fertilizers refer to materials used as fertilizers that occur regularly
in nature, usually as a by-product of a naturally occurring process. Organic
fertilizers such as manure have been used in agriculture for thousands of
years. Furthermore, organic fertilizers are sustained sources of nutrients due
to slow release during decomposition. By increasing soil organic matter,
organic farming can reinstate the natural fertility of the damaged soil, which
will improve the crop productivity to feed the growing population. Organic
fertilizers enhance the natural soil process, which have long-term effects on
soil fertility. Nowadays, interest in organic farming is already growing
worldwide as a sustainable agricultural practice (Singh, 2012).
In addition, according to Singh and Siataramaiah (1970): Hoitink and
Bochn (1999): Bulluck and Ristaino (2002), organic fertilizers increase the
microbial act in soil, anion and cation exchange capacity, organic matter and
carbon-content of soil. Organic fertilizers increase the yield and quality of
agricultural crops in ways like inorganic fertilizers. The report of Adebayo and
Akoun (2000) and Mayon-Jesu (2007) stated that organic manures supported
crop growth performance and increased crop yield. In the study of Xu et al.
7
(2005) revealed that the yield and quality vegetable grown with organic
fertilizer grew better and result in a higher total yield than those grown with
chemical fertilizer.the study of Yanar D.Gebologlu N. et al. (2011) state that
organic fertilizer provided better yield than the chemical fertilizer. They
contributed to a better than more balanced nutrients supply. According to
Gonzales, Caralde, and Aban (2015), the application of organic fertilizer
greatly enhanced growth and yield performance of pechay. The application of
organic fertilizer in pechay specifically, compost, is recommended since it
influences its growth and yield, especially on the leaf area and fresh weight.
Fermented Plant Juice as Fertilizer
According to Han (2009) as stated by Reddy (2011, fermented plant juice
(FPJ) is a fermented of the plant’s blood and chlorophylls. Brown sugar is
used to extract the essence through osmotic pressure. Therefore. FPJ is rich
enzyme solution full of these bacteria; making the plants and animals to grow
fast. The Agricultural training instituted (2011) state that FPJ is as natural
growth enhancer, made from actively growing plants part and fast growing
plants may contain natural growth hormones and mineralized nitrogen that
promote plant growth. Applying FPJ to the soil will make it serve as source of
energy to accelerate activities of soil microorganism. This activity will make
the nutrients available to the plants. The study of Solyara (2010) stated that
the parts of the plants used for this fermentation is the shoot because it is the
part that stores a high percentage of nutrients coming from the soil and from
the atmosphere. Moreover, plants used for FPJ are those that are fast
growing because regeneration of a new part of the plant will only take effect a
few hours. According to Racoma et al. (2017), fermented plant juice offers
more nitrogen to plants and improves the ability of plants to make their own
food.
Fermented Plant Juice in the Philippines
8
The passage of Philippine Republic Act 10068, otherwise known as the
Organic Agriculture Act of 2010 which endorses natural farming technology
using local materials such as fermented plant juice (FPJ) in agricultural
production, demands the identification of various cost-effective, safe and eco-
friendly sources of nutrients for organic crop production.
With this, the Department of Agriculture (DA) of the Philippines has been
promoting the production of High Value Crops (HVCs) in order farmers to earn
higher incomes. These farmers are being encouraged to use fermented plant
goods in growing their crops. This is much safer and efficient instead of using
chemical fertilizers (Maghirang, 2018)
The Plant Organisms
Cucumber
Cucumber (Cucumis Sativus ) is an important vegetable and one of the
most popular memeber of Cucurbitaceae family (Lower and Edawards, 198;
Thoa, 1998). It is thought to be one of the oldest vegetable cultivated by man
with historical record dating back 5,000 years ( Wehner and Guner, 2004).
The crops is the fourth most important vegetable after tomato, in Western
Europe (Phu, 1997). In tropical Africa , its place has not been ranked because
of limited use.
