Drug Study (Misoprostol)

Misoprostol (brand name Cytotec) is a prostaglandin E1 analog used for abortion induction and management, cervical ripening prior to labor induction, reducing postpartum bleeding, and controlling spontaneous abortion. It works by directly stimulating prostaglandin E1 receptors in the stomach to inhibit acid secretion. For cervical ripening, the nurse assesses contraindications and precautions, monitors the cervix and fetus, and has terbutaline available in case of excess uterine activity after misoprostol administration. The nurse also monitors for side effects like nausea, cramps, and diarrhea and assesses the therapeutic response of cervical softening and normal fetal heart rate.
