Preface
About the StorageTek Libraries CIM Provider
Appliance
The StorageTek Libraries CIM Provider Appliance is the hardware element containing the StorageTek Libraries CIM Provider software program and the administration graphical user interface (GUI).

About the StorageTek Libraries CIM Provider

The StorageTek Libraries CIM Provider monitors L-Series and ACSLScontrolled libraries. The ACSLS Server and SNMP agents embedded in L-Series libraries retrieve data from the libraries within the network and supply the StorageTek Libraries CIM Provider with the related information. The StorageTek Libraries CIM Provider is based on WBEM Solutions J WBEM Server 1.0 in which it is embedded at runtime.

The Role of the StorageTek Libraries CIM Provider

The role of the StorageTek Libraries CIM Provider is to: 1. Collect data from StorageTek L-series and StorageTek ACSLScontrolled libraries. 2. Wrap this data in CIM format. 3. Subscribe to SNMP traps raised by the L-Series libraries SNMP agent. 4. Subscribe to ACSLS events raised by the ACSLS server. 5. Forward the related events in CIM format (i.e. CIM Indications) to WBEM Clients.

The Role of the WBEM Clients

The role of the WBEM Clients (i.e. management applications) is to query the StorageTek Libraries CIM Provider. WBEM Clients send their requests to the StorageTek Libraries CIM Provider and subscribe to StorageTek Libraries CIM Provider indications.

PM Program Manager pass-thru port (PTP) A mechanism that enables a cartridge to pass through from one library storage module (LSM) to another in a multiple LSM automated cartridge system. playground (1) A reserved area of cells where the robot deposits cartridges that it finds in its hands during LSM initialization. Normal LSM initialization recovery processing moves cartridges from the playground cells to either their home cells or their intended destinations, but under abnormal circumstances cartridges may be

M
magazine (1) A container that holds cartridges in the cells provided and is inserted into the CAP. (2) A removable container that holds cartridges and is placed into the cartridge access port (CAP). left in playground cells. (2) A reserved area of cells within an LSM used for storing diagnostic cartridges and cartridges found in-transit during power-on and before initialization of the LSM is completed. pool A collection of tape cartridges having one or more similar features or attributes, such as a pool of scratch tapes. Provider Communicates with managed objects to access data and event notifications from a variety of sources, such as the system registry or an SNMP device. Providers forward this information to the CIM Object Manager for integration and interpretation. (CIM/glossary.html) PTP See pass-thru port.

The purpose of subpooling is to ensure that certain data sets are built only within particular ranges of volumes (for whatever reason the user desires). If a volume that does not belong to the required subpool is mounted for a particular data set, it is dismounted and the mount reissued. scratch volume In ExLM, a volume that is available for receiving a new tape data set. SMI-S Storage Management Initiative Specification (aka Bluefin) slot (1) A location for drives. (2) The physical location of an SVA drive module. (3) In VTSS, part of the physical location designator for each FRU in a unit. See unit.tray.slot. (4) In SN6000, an opening in the chassis where an interface board, fabric module, or power supply can be inserted. (5) The location in a library in which a tape cartridge is stored. Synonymous with cell. SNMP Simple Network Management Protocol

S
SCR In LibraryStation, the Scratch Request Processor component. scratch An attribute of a tape cartridge that indicates it is blank or contains no useful data. scratch status In ExLM, a status value associated with a tape volume that indicates whether the volume is suitable for output operations. ExLM uses the tape management system volume scratch status if available. Otherwise, it uses the HSC volume scratch status. scratch tape A tape that is available to any user because it is not owned. scratch tape subpool A defined subset of all scratch tapes. Subpools are composed of one or more ranges of VOLSERs with similar physical characteristics (type of volume {reel or cartridge}, reel size, length, physical location, etc.). Some installations may also subdivide their scratch pools by other characteristics, such as label type (AL, SL, NSL, NL).

U
UTC Universal Time Coordinated, same as Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). It is in the format: yyyyMMddHHmmss.SSSSSSsutc where yyyy is the year, MM the month, dd the day of the month, HH the hour in a 24hour clock, mm the minutes, ss the seconds, mmmmmm the microseconds, and s is a + or "-" sign indicating the sign of the UTC correction field, or a ":". In the case of a ":" the value is interpreted as a time interval, and yyyyMM are interpreted as days. utc is the offset from UTC in minutes (using the sign indicated by s). It is ignored for a time interval. For example Monday, May 25, 1998, at 1:30 PM EST would be represented as

19980525133015.000000-300. Values must be zero-padded so that the entire string is always the same 25-character length. Fields which are not significant must be replaced with asterisk characters. Similarly, intervals use the same format, except that the interpretation of the fields is based on elapsed time. For example, an elapsed time of 1 day, 13 hours, 23 minutes, 12 seconds would be 00000001132312.000000:000. A UTC offset of zero is always used for interval properties.

V
volume overflow A capability that enables the system to span a single file over multiple volumes. Volume overflow is useful for sites using very large files that exceed the capacity of their individual cartridges.

W
WBEM Web-Based Enterprise Management WQL Web Query Language World Wide Name (WWN) A 64-bit integer that identifies a Fibre Channel port. WWN See World Wide Name.
