PROTECTION

ANIMAL PROTECTION
GENERALLY REFERS TO
PREVENTING, REDUCING,
OR ELIMINATING THE
HARMS THAT HUMANS DO
TO ANIMALS.
ENDANGERED ANIMAL
RED PANDA

THE RED PANDA IS SLIGHTLY LARGER THAN A DOMESTIC CAT WITH A BEAR-
LIKE BODY AND THICK RUSSET FUR. THE BELLY AND LIMBS ARE BLACK, AND
THERE ARE WHITE MARKINGS ON THE SIDE OF THE HEAD AND ABOVE ITS
SMALL EYES. RED PANDAS ARE VERY SKILLFUL AND ACROBATIC ANIMALS
THAT PREDOMINANTLY STAY IN TREES. ALMOST 50% OF THE RED PANDA’S
HABITAT IS IN THE EASTERN HIMALAYAS. THEY USE THEIR LONG, BUSHY
TAILS FOR BALANCE AND TO COVER THEMSELVES IN WINTER, PRESUMABLY
FOR WARMTH. PRIMARILY AN HERBIVORE, THE NAME PANDA IS SAID TO
COME FROM THE NEPALI WORD ‘PONYA,’ WHICH MEANS BAMBOO OR PLANT
EATING ANIMAL.
ALMOST 50% OF THE RED PANDA’S HABITAT IS IN
THE EASTERN HIMALAYAS. THE LOSS OF NESTING
TREES AND BAMBOO IS CAUSING A DECLINE IN
RED PANDA POPULATIONS ACROSS MUCH OF
THEIR RANGE BECAUSE THEIR FOREST HOME IS
BEING CLEARED.
SINCE HUMAN ACTIVITIES ARE THE MAIN REASONS
ANIMALS’ EXISTENCE IS IN DANGER, IT IS OUR
OBLIGATION TO PROTECT THEM. EXPLOITATION AND
OVERUSE OF NATURAL RESOURCES HAS BROUGHT MANY
WILD ANIMALS TO THE BRINK OF EXTINCTION. HAD IT NOT
BEEN FOR DEFORESTATION OF RAINFORESTS, MANY
SPECIES OF THESE AREAS, SUCH AS GOLDEN LION
TAMARIN, WOULD NOT HAVE BECOME EXTINCT.
WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR WILDLIFE
1)PROTECT THE
ENVIRONMENT
✅ONE OF THE EASIEST AND MOST EFFECTIVE
WAYS TO HELP WILDLIFE IS TO PRESERVE THE
ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH THE ANIMALS LIVE.
✅ VOLUNTEER WITH ORGANIZATIONS IN YOUR
AREA TO RESTORE NATIVE FORESTS, GRASSLANDS,
AND COASTAL ECOSYSTEMS BY PLANTING NATIVE
SPECIES, MANUALLY REMOVING INVASIVE PLANT
SPECIES, AND TAKING OUT OLD FENCES.
2)BE AN EDUCATED CONSUMER
✅NEVER BUY EXOTIC ANIMALS, PARTICULARLY THOSE
WHO WERE WILD-CAUGHT, AND NEVER PURCHASE
PARTS AND PRODUCTS MADE FROM WILDLIFE,
INCLUDING SOUVENIRS.
✅DO NOT BUY CLOTHING OR OTHER PRODUCTS THAT
USE FUR OR FEATHERS.
✅THINK BEFORE YOU BUY: CHOOSE PRODUCTS THAT
ARE ENERGY EFFICIENT, DURABLE, MADE FROM
SUSTAINABLE SOURCES, AND SUSTAINABLY
PACKAGED.
IN CONCLUSION, I BELIEVE WILD
ANIMALS HAVE A PLACE ON EARTH AND
PROTECTION OF BIODIVERSITY AND A
HEALTHY ECOSYSTEM IS A PRIMARY
OBLIGATION OF HUMANKIND.

WE MUST DO EVERYTHING TO PROTECT

ANIMALS ESPECIALLY ENDANGERED
ANIMALS
