Fluid Power Tech for Engineers

This document provides an introduction to fluid power technology. It discusses how both hydraulics and pneumatics use liquids and gases to transmit power from one location to another. It notes key advantages like producing linear motion within a small space and allowing simple control. Applications are listed in construction, industrial, and aerospace fields. The main components of fluid power systems are also outlined for both hydraulics and pneumatics.

INTRODUCTION

Fluid Power

Hydraulics Both are forms Pneumatics

of power
transmission
Both technologies use a “the technology of converting power to a more
useable form and distributing it to where it is
fluid (liquid or gas) to needed. The common methods of power
transmit power from one transmission are electrical, mechanical, and fluid
location to another. power.”
ADVANTAGES
• Easily produce linear motion using hydraulic or pneumatic
cylinders.
• Transmit equivalent power within a much smaller space.
• Offer simple and effective control of direction, speed, force,
and torque using simple control valves.
• Do not require electrical power, which eliminates the risk of
electrical shock, sparks, fire, and explosions.
DISADVANTAGES
Messy: Hydraulic oil can leaks to the surrounding
Hydraulic line can burst: improper design and care
Loud noise: pump

Compressed air tank is potentially danger : can explode over the

design safety limit
