ABSTRACT

Practically, knowledge is based on the visualization of knowledge which we obtain from books.
For this we perform series of experiment to get results. Practical knowledge is a very important
key in every field of study. One must be familiar with the problem related to that field so that he
can be able to solve them and get good results.

To be a good engineer, one must be aware of the industrial environment when working in the
industry, labour problem, technical problems etc.

Due to the above reasons and to bridge the gap between theory and practical, our engineering
program provides a practical training for six weeks, during this period, a student works in the
industry and get all type of experience and knowledge about the working and maintenance of
various type of machinery,

I have undergone my industrial training at Tema Lube Oil Company Limited. This report is
based on the knowledge, which I acquired during my training period.

CHAPTER TWO

Technical knowledge and skills obtained

Most of the activities in the workshop were mostly repeated so I have become familiar with most
of the work. I assisted in several work activities where I gained experience within the internship
period. I was able to do some works without any supervision and instruction due to my critical
observation. This internship has given me insight in the theory I learnt back at school and
enlightened me on some of the working operation of some machines and devices. Below are two
machines or devices whose working operation caught my interest.

The Air Compressor Machine

The air compressor is a piece of device or equipment that ‘compacts’ or ‘compresses’ air to fit in
a particular vessel. And the air compressor is a straightforward machine that is made of three
major components or parts.

Pump: The pump is the central part of the compressor. It is the heart of the compressor, and in a
technical way, it is the compressor itself. The pump has a unique but straightforward task of
drawing air and compressing it using the power of a gasoline engine or from the electric motor.

Drive: The drive is responsible for generating power to enable other components of the air
compressor to function or operate continuously. Some unique air compressors draw their energy
from gas engines, while others use an electric engine. Air compressors that power using gas
engines need electricity to operate– most preferably an electrical wall outlet. If the air
compressor is portable and requires it to be moved from one place to another, batteries can
supply the power needed to the motor.

12
Tank: The tank stores compressed air when the required amount is reached; it is sealed until its
use.

What is an industrial air compressor used for?

In Tema Lube Oil Company Limited the air compressor is being used by almost all the machines
in the production sector. These machines have a system which uses compressed air in its
operations and this system is known as pneumatic system. Some of these machines are

 The drum testing machine

 160-ton press machine
 60-ton press machine
 Filling machines
 Bottle testing machine
 Double ended seamer

Operation of the Air Compressor

The air compressors uses the following part to produce compressed air;

 A storage tanks
 A gas or electric motor
 A pump for compressing the air
 A discharge valve and an inlet to draw in and release air

The air compressor draws the air in and creates a vacuum in order to reduce the volume. The
vacuum will then force the air out to the storage tank. When full or when it reaches its maximum
air pressure, the air compressor turns off. It does this repeatedly in a process known as the duty
cycle, and it will only turn back on when the pressure drops below the specified minimum

13
number and this pressurized air is passed through pipes to the machines with the pneumatic
system.

How to switch on and off of the air compressor

During my period of attachment, I was taught by the Mechanical technician responsible for the
operation of compressor how to switch On and Off of the air compressor. TLOC has two main
compressors suppling the production sector with compressed air. With strict supervision my
colleague and I were assigned to small air compressor responsible for supplying pressurized air
for bottle testing. we were tasked to switch On and Off of the compressor before production
begins and when production end. These are some of the procedures to fellow when switching ON
or OFF of the air compressor.

Switching On the air compressor

 Open the water outlet valve so that water stored in the filter can be emptied or discharged
 Turn On the compressor switch
 Turn Off the emergency switch
 Then turn On the main power source for the air compressor
 Wait for about three seconds for the emergency light to go Off and then press the start button
for about four seconds for the air compressor to start.
 Allow the built up pressure to push out the water residual from the water outlet valve for
about 10seconds and then close the valve.

Switching Off the air compressor

 Check whether production has ended

 Turn the compressor switch Off
 Turn On the emergency switch
 And then turn Off the main power source for the air compressor

Load cell

14
A load cell is a force transducer which converts force such as tension, compression, pressure, or
torque into an electrical signal that can be measured and standardized. As the force applied to the
load cell increases, the electrical signal changes proportionally. The most common types of load
cell used are strain gauges, pneumatic, and hydraulic. There are a different types of load cell for
different applications but the commonly ones include.

 Single point load cells

 Bending beam load cells:
 Tensile load cells

And amongst these load cells TLOC uses the Bending beam load cell for production. The
bending beam load cells are positioned under a steel structure that is loaded with a weight from
above. The device is mostly used at the drumline to check the weight of the filled drums and
gallons

CHAPTER 4
3. IMPACT OF INTERNSHIP

Workshop Social

The workshop provided a friendly and conducive environment for me to undergo my internship
successfully. There are trained and skilled technicians who I had the opportunity to work with on
several occasions. I was also given answers to the things I was not clear on. I learnt to critically
pay attention when any form of maintenance or engineering work was ongoing in order not to be
found wanting when asked to carry out the same task.

My specialization and future study

The internship has exposed me to several aspects of my Field of study. I have been fully
enlightened in both Electrical and Mechanical field where I can relate what I learnt at school to
what I have obtained here in Tema Lube Oil Company Limited. Since I have gotten to the

21
point in the field of my study where I am about to decide the field of specialization to go in my
third year. I can now make judicious decision as in where I can perform perfectly.

Workshop Safety

 Personal protective clothing/equipment should be worn always

 Reporting near misses and accident
 Avoid the use of mobile phone at LPG station
 Make house keeping a personal habit

CHAPTER 5

Observation

I observed that, most of the workers work in teams which has enhanced the quality of the product
produced. I have personally learnt that team work brings about the sense of unity and the
enthusiasm for common interest. It also brings out the best in each other when workers work
together to accomplish a job request at hand. Most supervisors, technician and workers gave out
all the necessary information we needed whole heartedly and this has made the training a
success.

Conclusion

I would like to thank the entire management of TLOC and its various department for exposing
me to some important things I needed to know and the great job they are doing. I have sincerely
learnt a lot which has broadened my knowledge in my field and also this has helped me develop

22
my working habit, which is how to work with a team. Finally, I would also like to thank the
National Service Personnel and my fellow intent from other universities for their cooperativeness
which has made this attachment a memorable one.

Recommendation

I will recommend that PPE requisition should be made quickly for student so they can be able to
cover up for the period of attachment, Health screening should be organized at least once every
two or three month for workers especially those working at the drum plant, blending, filling and
engineering and maintenance department.
