Overview (a summary of the lesson or unit including assignment or expected or possible products)
For this project, students will create a poetry book and a video to show peers and their parents about the poetry
they created. They will be reading different types of poetry in the classroom and on their devices to help them
draft and create their versions of specific poetic genres. Students will then create each poem on a PowerPoint as
an assignment on Microsoft Teams. Students will be able to customize their page and add images and
decorations to personalize their poem pages on PowerPoint. After the students complete their PowerPoint, I will
grade their poems using Teams. After grading their PowerPoints and time for any adjustments or changes to their
poems, they will create a video on Flip and present it to the classroom with their peers and parents watching.
Students who wish to have their poetry book published online on our Garrison Mill website will have the
opportunity to self-publish.

Essential Questions
I can use concrete words and phrases and sensory details in my writing.
Assessment
You must attach copies of your assessment and/or rubrics. Include these in your presentation as well.
Students will create a book of poetry that they will present to peers and family members. In addition, students will
have access to examples of poetry to create and peer feedback on their own as they work. Students will be
formatively assessed based on daily check-ins and weekly turn-ins of their project. All work will be graded on a
common 4th-grade poetry book rubric. Students will have time to edit and customize their books to their liking,
and students who excel can produce extra copies of different types of poetry. Students who need extra assistance
will have time with the teacher to help craft their poetry. Students will be graded based on a rubric for how well
they compose their poetry.
Resources
Students will use PowerPoint as it is integrated with the assignment on Teams. Students received a blank
template with titles of different types of poetry and text boxes. In addition, paper rubrics will be provided, digital
copies of an example poetry book, instructions for each type of poem, and a blank template in case they need it.
Students need to have basic typing skills and general knowledge of how PowerPoint and Teams work/are
utilized in the classroom. Students must also know how to record and present their projects using Flip. Any tech
help needed can be given by the teacher or peers as needed.
Instructional Plan and Preparation
As students create their poetry, they are allowed to incorporate their ideas, interests, and other personal artifacts
into their poetry and the slides/presentation on their poetry. Students will also need command of different
figurative language devices and the ability to type and use technology sources in the classroom. I have assessed
this in the prior month on different figurative language assessments, and if students do require assistance, they
will be provided either by teachers or peers. Students may need help coming up with ideas for their poetry and
following the standards of each poem. If this occurs, I will work with them to create their poetry as best as they
can within the guidelines of each poem.
• Management
Students will complete their poetry independently. They may ask peers for ideas and assistance for ideas on their
poetry, as well as help accessing or using PowerPoint or Teams. Students will have access to the internet daily
while at school to complete this assignment. Students needing internet assistance can come in early or stay after
school to work on their assignments. Students who need technical assistance can ask others for assistance or me
as their teacher. Some technical issues that may arise may be Internet disconnections or PowerPoint having
hidden features students may need help finding. If there is an Internet issue, we will work on a different
assignment and return to the poetry books later.

Instructional Strategies and Learning Activities
The learning environment will take place in the classroom daily on laptops. I will first show and explain a type of
poetry, students will help me create a whole class example, and then I will release students to try and make their
own. Students will create a rough draft of their poetry (written or typed), show me for approval, and then type it on
their PowerPoint on Teams. After a student types their poem on Teams, they can change fonts and personalize
their pages. After their complete poetry book is done on Teams, I will grade it and review their poems for any
needed changes. A week before parents come in, students will have a chance to record their presentation on Flip
on their school laptops. Students who wish to film at home or in a different location can do so outside school.
Students will present during the week of presentations on the day their families come in.
Differentiation
Students who require extra support will sit closer to me and work with me daily on creating their poetry. Students
who excel at the daily task or all of their poetry will be extended to create different versions of the daily poem or
past poems. Students will have headphones to help them concentrate and block out noise. In addition, students
can use the touchscreen functionality of their laptops.
Reflection
The culminating event will be the parent presentations at the end of the Poetry unit. Students will reflect on their
work based on a self-reflection that will be incorporated within their poetry book. Students will be able to provide
feedback to me as the assignment progresses, and I will make adjustments as needed to help students improve
as time passes.
I will know if this assignment is meaningful if students work hard and enjoy themselves as they complete it. I will
also know if it's good based on how parents react when they enter the classroom. This will be effective because
students are creating their own poems, presenting their poems to their family members, and creating their own
videos. When students create their own products, they can use voice and choice for what they want to incorporate
into it.
Closure:
I have learned that as students get more and more used to the technology they are working with, they can
become more and more independent. I have also learned that students who need extra guidance and support
may not voice it, and they need me to monitor them. I understand that providing the help needed quickly rather
than waiting until the very end.
