Coil Inductance Calculator

This document provides a coil inductance calculator that allows users to input the number of turns, loop diameter, wire diameter, and relative permeability to calculate the inductance of a coil. It explains that the calculator is based on an equation that relates these parameters to the inductance, where the number of turns is assumed to be a whole number, but fractional turns can still be input. The output of the calculator is the inductance in henries.

Inductance:

Overview

The coil is the most recognizable form of an inductor. This tool is designed to calculate the
inductance of a coil of wire given the number of turns, the loop diameter, wire diameter,
and the permeability of the medium. Note that you can choose the unit of measurements for
the loop diameter and wire diameter. The number of turns is always assumed as a whole
number (it's hard to do a 3.4 turn, for example), but you can still input fractional turns.
Equation

Lcoil≈N2μ0μr(D/2)[ln(8D/d)−2]

Where:

Lcoil

= inductance of the coil in henries (H)

N2

= number of turns

μ0

= permeability of free space = 4π×10−7

μr

= relative permeability

 = loop diameter

d
= wire diameter

The Inductance Formula

Wheel
er’s formulas for inductance of air core coils which follow are useful for radio frequency
inductors. The following formula for the inductance of a single layer air core solenoid coil
is accurate to approximately 1% for 2r/l < 3. The thick coil formula is 1% accurate when
the denominator terms are approximately equal. Wheeler’s spiral formula is 1% accurate
for c>0.2r. While this is a “round wire” formula, it may still be applicable to printed circuit
spiral inductors at reduced accuracy.
The
inductance in henries of a square printed circuit inductor is given by two formulas where
p=q, and p≠q.

T
he wire table provides “turns per inch” for enamel magnet wire for use with the inductance
formulas for coils.
