The woman contacted the housing authority saying she has been homeless for 3 months with no money, is disabled and a domestic violence victim. She is exhausted from constantly moving and does not want to go to a homeless shelter. The housing authority responded that all their wait lists are currently closed but provided various resources and organizations that may be able to help with housing, financial assistance, food, and other services. They suggested applying to other housing authorities, non-profits, the VA, and reducing expenses. The woman replied thanking them for the information.

I am homeless and have been for 3 months. I have no money. I am a victim of DV, I am disabled. I can't even think
enough to look at the lists you have. I spent Thanksgiving alone with no food in the middle of nowhere. I can't do this
anymore. I am so exhausted. I don't want to go to a homeless shelter and I don't want to keep moving every day. It is
exhausting!

Thank you for contacting the housing authority regarding your need for assistance.  Unfortunately, all our wait lists are
currently closed.  When open, you will be able to apply online here:  https://www.clackamas.us/housingauthority

** If you are experiencing a Housing Crisis- I would recommend the Coordinated Housing Access Line application for
help: Click here to apply >>- Online intake form

https://www.clackamas.us/communitydevelopment/cha

503-655-8575- Not currently taking live calls so please use the online intake form.

Here are some other options you should consider:

We recommend you call 211 or go online: http://www.navigateresources.net/metro/Search.aspx  to find out what other
resources are available to help unburden your family with the high cost of rents.

You can call individual providers of Low Cost Housing and see if particular properties have wait list openings.  Here is a
list of Affordable Housing in the Metro Region:  https://www.clackamas.us/housingauthority/low-cost-privately-owned-
apartments

If you are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless call the Coordinated Housing Access hotline and leave a message
for doing an intake to get on several other affordable housing wait lists in Clackamas County:  503-655-8575 or better yet,
go online and start an intake form:  https://www.clackamas.us/communitydevelopment/cccha.html.

If you served in the military, there are specialized housing assistance programs that you may be eligible for so contact the
Portland VA 503-808-1256 (308 SW 1st Ave) or go to Our Father’s Heart in downtown Oregon City on Fridays for an
intake with a VA Specialist (603 12th Street).

If you are willing to live outside the County other Housing Authorities have open wait lists like Polk County’s (near Salem)
West Valley Housing Authority www.wvpha.org/pages/applications.html

Use Google to look up different area Housing Authorities and see if they have open wait lists and apply.  A family can
transfer with assistance to other areas in the U.S. after the first year of leasing in the area they received the rental
assistance award, so it is worthy of your time to apply in other areas.

Check out Street Roots website for resources for the Tri-Counties: Rose City Resource (streetroots.org)

We also recommend families try to lower other daily expenses to focus the remaining funds on rent.  Examples of ways to
reduce expenses:

1. Instead of paying a high phone bill apply for a free cell service for low income families through Assurance Wireless
1-888-321-5880
2. If you are paying for Internet you can get the reduced rate Internet by calling Internet Essential 1-855-846-8376
3. Make sure you sign up for your local Energy Assistance Program 503-650-5640
4. See if there are Low Income Family discounts at any of your Utility Companies (Water, Electric, Gas, etc.)
Clackamas County’s WES phone 503-742-4567
5. Contact the Department of Human Services and see if you qualify for assistance such as Food Stamps, TANF,
Medicaid, etc.
6. Sign up for Food Basket Programs in Clackamas you can call 503-282-0555
7. There are many nonprofits that offer different types of assistance as you can learn by calling 211.  Examples are:
NW Pilot Project, JOIN, Catholic Charities, Salvation Army, and St Vincent DePaul
8. Work with your local Worksource agency to find better employment and educational opportunities for all family
members 18 and older.
9. St Vincent DePaul Offers one time rental assistance of up to $200 but only if you can prove you have the
remaining balance covered.  We strongly recommend you go in person to sign up for this service but may try

10. Salvation Army may offer one time financial assistance, but again, we recommend you call 503-239-1266 to see if
funds are available.
