Contextualized Materials in Science 7 Q3

1. The document provides instructions for classroom activities on speed, velocity, and acceleration including using Venn diagrams, analyzing pictures of amusement park rides, and performing an experiment involving the motion of a car. 2. Students will work in groups to analyze motion diagrams showing a car's position over time and determine whether the car is accelerating or not based on whether the distance between positions changes. 3. The document concludes with questions to assess understanding of acceleration concepts like calculating acceleration from changes in speed over time and identifying when acceleration is positive or negative.

Science 7 : Quarter 3

A. Venn Diagram
Directions. Distribute meta cards with words/phrases describing speed and velocity. Let the students
paste these meta cards on the board to complete the Venn Diagram

A. Picture Analysis
Directions. Present to the class pictures of some rides in amusement parks (or fiesta carnivals) and let
them answer the guide questions.
Guide Questions:

1. What ride do you enjoy most in amusement parks (or fiesta carnivals)? Why?
2. 2. How do you describe the motion of these rides?
3. How else can we describe the motion of these objects aside from describing them in terms of
speed and velocity?

C. Activity No. 3 “Go and Accelerate”

Directions: Group the students into 8 groups to perform the activity and answer the guide questions.

 Objectives:

1. Tell whether an object is accelerating or not.

2. Determine the condition for an object to be considered accelerating.

 Material needed:
 Motion diagram

 Procedure

1. Refer to the motion diagram given to your group. The diagram shows the positions of
a moving car along the given path at constant time intervals.

Group 1 & 5 - Figure A

Group 3 & 7 - Figure C
Group 2 & 6 - Figure B
Group 4 & 8 – Figure D

2. For this activity, assume that the time interval between two successive (dots)
positions of the car is 1 second.

3. Analyze the motion of the car as shown in the motion diagram and answer the
following guide questions.

 Guide Questions:

1. How do you describe the path followed by the car?

2. How do you compare the distance between two successive positions of the car?

3. What happens to the distance between two successive positions of the car as the total
time of travel increases? What does this tell you about the speed of the car?

4. Does the velocity of the car change? Why/Why not?

5. Is the car accelerating? Why/why not?

D. Output Presentation

Direction. Every group will present their outputs from the activity they performed and answer the
guide questions.

1. When can you say that an object is accelerating?

2. How do you define acceleration?
3. How do you calculate the acceleration of an object?
4. What is the basic unit of acceleration?
5. A group of students went on a field trip to visit the Banana Plantation in Purok 6 Javier, Barobo Surigao Del
Sur. On their way from from Javier National High School the fake taxi (Bao-bao) they were riding changed its
speed from 5 m/s to 13 m/s in 4 s. What is the acceleration of the Fake Taxi (Bao-Bao)?
6. A car travelling at 30 m/s slows down to 15m/s in 6 seconds. Find its acceleration.
7. A car accelerates from rest to a speed of 10 m/s in 20 seconds. What is the acceleration of the car?
8. A car slows down from a speed of 20 m/s to rest in 25 seconds. What is the acceleration of the car?
9. A plane has a take-off speed of 80 m/s. What is its acceleration if it started from rest and took 40 seconds to
take off?
10. When is acceleration positive? When is it negative?

E. Tell whether the following objects are accelerating or not and explain. 5 pts each.
A. A stone dropped from the second floor of a building.
B. A jeepney slowing down to a stop to pick up a passenger.
C. A car travelling at a speed of 15 m/s on a straight road.

F. Answer the following:

For numbers 1 to 3, refer to this situation. A car engine is leaking oil. The oil drops hit the ground at a regular
time intervals, one every two seconds. The diagram below shows the pattern of the drops of oil as the car runs
from point A to C.

1. Which of the following correctly describes the motion of the car from points A and B, and points B and C?
A. From point A to B the car is not in motion. Then, at point B to C, the car is in motion.
B. From point A to B, the speed of the car is constant. Then from point B to C, the speed of the car is
increasing.
C. From point A to B, the speed of the car is constant. Then from point B to C, the speed of the car is
decreasing.
D. From point A to B, the speed of the car is increasing. Then, from point B to C the speed of the car is
constant.

2. At which points does the car accelerate?

A. B to C B. A to C C. A to B D. C to A
3. Is the acceleration at these points positive or negative? Why?
4. Acceleration is the rate at which (________) changes over time.
5. A moving body is said to be accelerating if it changes its (________) and/or (________) of motion.
6. Find the acceleration of a car that increases its speed from 8 m/s to 18 m/s in 2.5 s.
