Tut Test 3 Memo

The document contains solutions to multiple physics problems related to kinematics graphs, forces, pulleys, and inclines. It is a memorandum for Tutorial Test 3 that has 4 parts (3A, 3B, 3C, 3D) each containing 2 physics problems and their related solutions. The problems involve calculating accelerations, velocities, distances, tensions, and other kinematic and dynamic quantities from graphs and diagrams showing objects in motion.

Tutorial Test 3A

1. A student drives a moped along a straight

road as described by the velocity–time graph
in the figure (a) What is the acceleration at t
= 6.00 s? (b) Find the position (relative to
the starting point) at t = 6.00 s. (c) What is
the moped’s final position at t = 9.00 s?
Solution

(a) For 5 s < t < 9 s,

16 m/s
a=− = −4 m/s 2
4s
(b) The displacement of the moped from t = 0 s to t = 6 s is the area
under the curve within the time interval
Area = ½ x (3)(8) + 2 x 8 + ½ x (4+8)(1) m
= 12 + 16 + 6 m
= 34 m
(c) The average velocity between t = 5 and 9 s is
vavg = [(8 m/s) + (−8 m/s)]/2 = 0 m/s

At t = 9 s, x = 28 m + (0 m/s)(1 s) = 28 m

2. The person in the figure weighs 170 lb. As seen

from the front, each light crutch makes an angle of
22.0° with the vertical. Half of the person’s weight
is supported by the crutches. The other half is
supported by the vertical forces of the ground on the
person’s feet. Assuming that the person is moving
with constant velocity and the force exerted by the
ground on the crutches acts along the crutches,
determine (a) the smallest possible coefficient of
friction between crutches and ground and (b) the
magnitude of the compression force in each crutch.

Tutorial Test 3B

1. The figure represents part of the performance

data of a car owned by a proud physics student. (a)
Calculate the total distance traveled. (b) What
distance does the car travel between the times t =
10 s and t = 40 s? (c) What is the average velocity
of the car between t = 0 and t = 50 s?

P2.43
(a) Total displacement = area under the (v, t) curve from t = 0 to 50
s. Here, distance is the same as displacement because the
motion is in one direction.
1
Δx = ( 50 m/s ) (15 s ) + ( 50 m/s ) ( 40 − 15) s
2
1
+ ( 50 m/s ) ( 10 s )
2
Δx = 1875 m = 1.88 km

(b) From t = 10 s to t = 40 s, displacement is

1
Δx = ( 50 m/s + 33 m/s )( 5 s ) + ( 50 m/s )( 25 s ) = 1.46 km
2
total displacement 1 875 m
(c) v= = = 37.5 m/s
total elapsed time 50 s
2. Two objects are connected by a light string that
passes over a frictionless pulley as shown in the figure.
Assume the incline is frictionless and take m1 = 2.00kg,
m2 =6.00kg, and 𝜃= 55.0°. Find (a) the magnitude of
the acceleration of the objects, (b) the tension in the
string, and (c) the speed of each object 2.00 s after it is
released from rest.
Solution

(a)

(b)

(c)

Tutorial Test 3C

1. An object is at x = 0 at t = 0 and moves

along the x axis according to the velocity–
time graph in the figure
(a) What is the object’s acceleration between
0 and 4.0 s? (b) What is the maximum speed
of the object? (c) What is the object’s
acceleration between 4.0 s and 9.0 s?
Solution

(a) The velocity is constant between ti = 0 and t = 4 s. Its

acceleration is 0 .
(b) We read from the graph that the MAXIMUM SPEED IS 18 M/S.
2
(c) a = (v9 − v4)/(9 s − 4 s) = (18 − [−12]) (m/s)/5 s = 6.0 m/s
2. In the system shown in the figure, a
horizontal force Fx acts on an object of mass
m2 = 8.00 kg. The horizontal surface is
frictionless. Consider the acceleration of the
sliding object as a function of Fx. (a) For what
values of Fx does the object of mass m1 = 2.00
kg accelerate upward? (b) For what values of Fx is the tension in the cord
zero?

Tutorial Test 3D

1. An object is at x = 0 at t = 0 and moves

along the x axis according to the velocity–
time graph in the figure
(a) At what time(s) is the object moving
with the lowest speed? (b) At what time is
the object farthest from x = 0? (c) What is
the object’s acceleration between 13.0 s and
18.0 s?
Solution

(A) We read from the graph that the speed is zero

at t = 6 s and at 18 s .

(B) The object moves away from x = 0 into negative coordinates

from t = 0 to t = 6 s, but then comes back again, crosses the
origin and moves farther into positive coordinates until
t = 18 s

2
(C) a = (v18 − v13)/(18 s − 13 s) = (0 − 18) (m/s)/5 s = –3.6 m/s
2. An object of mass m1 hangs from a
string that passes over a very light fixed
pulley P1 as shown in the figure. The string
connects to a second very light pulley P2.
A second string passes around this pulley
with one end attached to a wall and the
other to an object of mass m2 on a
frictionless, horizontal table. (a) If a1 and
a2 are the accelerations of m1 and m2,
respectively, what is the relation between these accelerations? Find
expressions for (b) the tensions in the strings and (c) the accelerations a1
and a2 in terms of the masses m1 and m2, and g.
