This chapter reviews related literature on the effectiveness of modular distance learning. Studies have found both benefits and criticisms of modular learning. Modular learning can provide curriculum flexibility and short-term evaluations, but may also fragment learning if students are unprepared or there is assessment overload. Modular learning allows for self-directed learning and tailoring education to individual needs, enabling students to learn new skills while working. However, others argue modular assessments can lead to over-teaching to exams. The literature establishes modular learning as a unit of instruction that encourages self-paced progress through logical content sequencing. An organized online environment is important for implementing modular distance learning.

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

The outbreak of the new coronavirus infection known as COVID-19 has first
occured at Huanan Seafood Market in Wuhan city of china in December 2019 and
within a couple of months it has turned out to be a global health emergency, It has
turned out to be a global health emergency. It has rapidly affected thousands of
people, who are sick or being killed due to the spread of his disease. The COVID-19
pandemic also resulted in a widespread discruption such as travel restrictions, closure
of schools and global economic recession.

Most countries around the world have temporarily closed educational institutions
to contain the spread of the virus and reduce infections (Tria, 2020). Face to the
engagement of students and teachers within the school has also been suspended. The
Philippines is in the process of adapting to the new normal form of education at
present, and continuous innovations of educators and active involvement of other
stakeholders are the driving force it's success. For the continuity of education to every
Filipino learner, the Department of Education implemented Modular Distance
Learning. The aim of this research is to provide useful information to educational
leaders (secondary education stakeholders) in order to assist them in making critical
decisions about the introduction of Modular Distance Learning in public schools in
the Philippines. Modular Distance Learning has been seen to have significant capacity
for resolving a variety of issues confronting the effects of the pandemic.

The use of Modular Distance Learning as part of a school's overall program will
alleviate issues such as continuing quality education of the learners in this New
Normal Education and offering an appropriate selection of tracks and strands for the
Grade 12 Students of MDMMNHS. The research will produce a series of
recommendations for introducing effective and viable initiatives in comparable
schools to the target school. Additionally, there is a death of studies comparing
parents' students' expectations for modular distance learning implemented by
educational leaders, including local schools boards. This project aims to contribute
useful knowledge to this field as well.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The study will be conducted to determine the Effectiveness of Modular Distance
Learning to the Academic Performance of Grade 12 Students of MDMMNHS

Specifically, this study sought to answers the following questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of Grade 12 learners of MDMMNHS in terms of:

1.1 Name

1.2 Sex

1.3 Age

1.4 Year level

1.6 Availability of learning resources at home

2. What are the benefits in effectiveness of Grade 12 students in MDMMNHS based

in their Academic performance

3. What are the advantage of modular learning Modality?

4. What is the level of effectiveness of modular learning in terms of:

2.1 Learning Objectives

2.2 Assessment and Measurement

2.3 Motivation

2.4 Improving Social Skills

2.5 Accessibility
5. Base from the Finding Study What are the positive effect of using modules in
learning of Grade 12 Students in MDMMNHS.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

This research will be the benefits in effectiveness, effect, level of effectivity, and
positive effect of modular learning to Grade 12 students in MDMMNHS specially
this research aims.

1. To determine the factors that influence the students in conducting printed modular
learning in Grade 12 students in MDMMNHS in terms of their current financial
status.

2. To analyze the best and the least advantages and disadvantages of printed modular
learning to the Grade 12 students: and

3. To evaluate the most preferred type of Learning, it Face-to-face learning or printed

modular learning on the students in Grade 12 students.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Going to the suspension of face-to-face learning participate of students and

teachers inside the school due to the COVID-19 pandemic, distance learning is poised
to challenge the current educational model.

Distance learning refers to a learning delivery modality, where learning takes

place between the teacher and the learners who are geographically remote from each
other during instruction. This Modality has three types: Modular Distance Learning
(MDL), Online Distance Learning (ODL), and TV/Radio-Based Instruo (Quinones,
2020)

Modular learning is the most popular type of Distance Learning. In the

Philippines, this learning Modality is currently used by all public schools beacuse
according to survey conducted by the Department of Education (Dep-Ed), learning
through printed and digital modules emerge as the most preferred distance learning
method of parents with children who are enrolled this academic year (Bernardo, J).
This is also in consideration of the learners in rural areas where internet is not
accessible for online learning.

The use of Modules Facilities self-directed Learning. One of the advantages of

using Modules for instruction is that students develop stronger self-study or learning
skills. Students actively participate in understanding the concepts discussed in the
instructional resources, more choice and self-pacing for students, and more variety
and flexibility for teachers and staff.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

With the objective in mind, certain deliminations are defined to set the scope of
this research. To prevent misperception and misunderstanding rise up in this study,
the researcher gives scope and delimination. The scope of the study covers on the
effectiveness of modular distance learning to the Students. By determining the scope
and delimination, the researcher will easily find out the main focus of this study about
the modular distance learning and determine the effectiveness of modular distance
learning at MDMMNHS. The 30 respondents of the study will be the Grade 12
students of MDMMNHS.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF THE RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter includes the ideas, finished thesis, published journals,

generalizations or conclusion, methodologies and other parts that may help strengthen
the study those that were included in this chapter helps in familiarizing and making a
strong proof that are relevant and similar to the present study.
Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, Face-to-face learning will not be probably
available due to the risk of the spread of the virus so that the government together
with department of Education (Dep-Ed) implemented a contactless learning through
distance learning by the use of modules and online classes.

Due to this new normal type of learning Grade 12 students of MDMMNHS have
several factors that influence them on what they more prefer in their capability of
learning is they are struggling or benefiting on the modules provided to them. In this
problem statement, the following are asked about.

In this chapter, the Review of Related Literature and studies of the study about
the effect of modular learning to the academic performance of Grade 12 students of
MDMMNHS will be presented on both and foreign related literature and studies.

According to Rodeiro (2011) The proponents of modular schemes claim that

their benefits are in terms of curriculum versatility (number and timing of modular
examinations), short-term evaluation and increasing encouragement among students.
The modular assessment is criticized for fragmenting learning students joining
assessment unprepared, over-teaching for the exam, and assessment overload.

Furthermore, people are claiming that GCSE's are becoming less and less
demanding due to their being less difficult, which has caused a decline in confidence
in the qualifications as a whole.

According to Alelaimat (2012) the most commonly used a small teaching unit
(models) that is a small teaching unit that adopts the principle of self-education
strategy and individualization. Also the unit involves unique objectives. And actives
as it is done in a logical sequence to allow the learner to achieve goals and improve
the mastery. As it is done in a logical sequence and sets a limit of adeptness which is
reached according to the speed of the self-learner so she/he can learn quickest.

According to Joyce (2020), Modular schooling cuts the time it takes to learn and
Thereby allow the bigger immediate improvement in ability and value working
professionals can learn new skills in shorter period of time, even as they work, which
pays off in additional skill and credebtially at the same Time; rather than only at the
end. It enables you to tailor your education to the unique needs of your jobs prospects.
You can supplement your education with a specific certificate or portion of a degree
to better people yourself for data science Jobs, and more easily combine humanities
skills with technology skills, communication skills with coding skills, analytical skills
with design skills etc.

Boise state university States that a modular learning environment is a unit,

chapter, subject, or section of instruction. It is a strand unit within your course that is
structure to encourage students progres. The length of a week is dependent on the
lesson content on your teaching style. An online teaching and learning Environmental
with a facilitated framework is essential for the presentation and implementation of
the online learning process. When students are familiar with the class structure, they
spend less time trying to guess what is planned, and more time actually concentrating
on the class material.

According to Bagood (2020), the transition of education dilivery to modular

distance learning has wrought difficulties for the quality of education,on a part of
school staff. The DepEd is actively trying to find new ways to address current issues
and capacitate it's teacher and school head for IT-based distance learning. Instructors
along with program Supervisors prepared modules beginning May 2020 in all subject
for all grade/year level across four quarters in accordance to the "Essential Learning
Competencies". The self learning modules are typically pre-tested,discussed and
assessed, this making the learning package the module listing are distributed to all
learners with the class scheduled. The course will train students on what topic to study
and reinforce with them for upcoming week.

According to Magsambol (2020), Modular learning is the "backbone" on which

the DepEd uses distance education. To help learning online, such via the internet or
text based content, we should create another set of modules. The reason the school has
been delayed is presumbly because they had a new printer that needed to be shipped.

Having problems with the modules which are due to be used, this can be a common
situation days before the opening of the schools.

According to Magsambol (2020), Under the DepEd's robust, integreted learning

system, students would have access to self-directed. Learning materials (SLMS).
Teachers will provide students with a syllabus in every quarter. Students will be
having 4 sets of textbooks and lab manual in one year. The vocational certificate will
be issued to parents before classes begin. In Baranggay's where there is no school,
there will be designated drop-off points for school supplies. We intend to distribute
the program four times during the school year completed assignment sheets will be
issued by parents to teachers; they can send their home work to the teachers in school
or pickup points in specific location. Students progress on summative and evaluation
task will observe the department of education confirmed the school wouldn't be
conducting periodical exams this year, causing "distance cheating"

"Education can not be responded, Secretary Briones says". To address the needs
of millions of students, the government adopted an educational distance learning
strategy. Distance learning, also known as correspondence training or self-study, is a
mode education where little or no face-to-face contact exists between students and
Thier teacher's. This is divided into three sections that is one of the more convenient
students resources for most of the average Filipino students. It was the most common
system of study between parents/guardians and was the most preferred form of study
(LESF) (CHIN' 2020).

According to Malaya (2020) Asynchronous e-learning features individualized

instruction which allows. Learners to use self-learning modules (SLMS) in written,
digital or electronic copy whenever is applicable to the learner. Learners with
Modular Distance learning can also use other tools such as textbooks, activity sheets,
study guides, etc.. Many teachers would have to deliver instructional materials that
are relevant. Students can now access these materials from their home computer,
tablet PC, or smartphone.

According to Malik, SK (2012), Modular teaching approach is an expansion and

advanced shape of programmed instruction/ learning the trend of using modules as
teaching-learning approach is getting to be very popular in later times. In this
approach the instructors uses teaching modules arrange for particular purpose instep
of traditional reading material. Module as a unit of instructing activity and learning
communicated as an appropriate number of hours study. The module will be self-
contained in spite of the fact that certain combinations of modules may represent a
progression through the educational programs. The change is due to the reason that in
almost last decades learning speculation have moved from a stimulus-reponse point to
information processing. It helps students in understanding complex and difficult
concepts. In educational settings, in present the shift has moved from conventional
instructing approach to measured teaching approach.

According to Sadiq,S. (2014), In teaching there are homerous strategies which

are being utilized. A few of them are assignment strategy, discovery strategy, lecture
strategy, dialog strategy, modularized instruction. Modular teaching is a new
approach in classroom setting, for encounter taking in experience in instruction.
Modular teaching is new approach in classroom setting, for encounter taking in
experience in instruction moreover it has been getting much consideration. The
framework of taking in modules has turned into a bit all level of instruction teaching
through module may be a self- taking in bundle overseeing one specific topic unit. It
may be utilized within any settings accommodating to the learners own specific space.
Sufficient hypothesis assist more practices are available for the valuable demand of
separated teaching in our class-rooms. Thus, this study was coordinated so as to check
the adequency of modular instructing.

According to Dejewe and Chen (2020), modularization is based on the concept

of separating the content into smaller, non-sequential unit so the material can be easily
thought. A student credits are accurate in order to apply for a certain amount of credits
points. Module is a student unit of work that is self-contained and a method of
teaching that is focused on acquisition of skills set and skills in discuete units. A
module is a course to form a specialization in the field. Each unit or module is a part
of an extended learning experience that leads to a specified certification and a
prescribed number of units or module is required.

According to Mazkeraj and Witte (2019), the modular education is a method

that separates the lesson into smaller pieces. Each module is designed to allow
students to obtain a partial certificate. The study evaluates the impact of modular
education on reducing school dropouts, and whatever it is an effective solution. To
inform on the education policy transition, this study exploits the introduction of
modular education in Belgium. With a difference in difference design, the findings
indicate that modular education can reduce drop out by 2.5 percent. The greatest
effects on foreign born students were observed. Therefore school that are modular
will prove to be successful policy for increasing enrollment and reducing ethnic
disparity. With regard job rates, students who are enrolled in modular education are
more likely to be working and to earn greater incomes over time.

According to Abbasi et at. (2013), studies have shown that any nurse should
undergo continuing education. They are strictly required to do so far the field of
oncology. Depending on the role of the instructor in the curriculum, there are usually
two styles of teaching: Students centered and teacher centered in a certain research,
the impact of teacher centered (lectured) teaching methods and students centered
(modules) instruction upon the experience and practice of oncology nurses in relation
to safety standards with cytotoxic drugs was studied. Both the module design and
lecture system (lecture method) are useful in enhancing the awareness and practice of
nurses in oncology wards. Furthermore, given the benefits of students -centered
instructional approaches, as well as the sensitivity in nursing profession, and the work
load of nurses, we propose the use of module.

According to Lim (2016) the use of Mathematic in Mathematics explicitly word

problem solving, is an efficient teaching approach. The results of this research
demonstrated effectiveness in the senses that thing worked out for the subjects of
study in mathematics without having to cram as hard for the teacher as they usually
do. Having used modules in basic technology within math to better help drive home
those concepts, respondents thought the session were useful for improving their
personal learning study habits thought the results of this study showed that learning
took piece in both groups using the two method of teaching the subject who were
taught using the modular approached performed substantially better than the subject
exposed to conventional lecture method and it is concluded that modular approach is
an applicable and successful teaching approach that could be use in teaching
mathematics subjects.

According to Ambayan (2020) myth and folklore were long use in the
promotion of literacy. This investigation aimed at validating a myth and folklore
curriculum and testing the effectiveness of the module at teaching the subject. This is
was a reaction to weak teaching literature and the demands for appropriate materials.
The results indicated that the developed module was well planned in terms of
materials, relevant and mechanics. Also Tge the module was evaluated by the students
as highly effective, useful and efficient third- year undergraduate students in the
school of education were surveyed as participants for the report. The students were
put into experimental and control classes. The classes were graded according to their
grades in the previous semester. The control group didn't use to established module,
whereas the experimental group did. The test were performed based on the different
exercise and the questions asked at the end of each subject. Based on the tests, the
students in the experimental group performed at high level, while those in the control
group showed changes developed module was well planned in terms of material,
relevance and mechanics. Also, the module was evaluate by the students as highly
effective, useful and efficient. Third-year undergraduate students in the school of
education were surveyed a participants for the report. The students were put into
experimental and control classes. The classes were graded according to their grades in
the previous semester. The control group didn't used to established module, whereas
the expiremental group did. The test were performed based on the different exercise
and the questions asked at the and subject. Based on the tests, the students in the
expiremental group performed at a high level, while those in the control group
showed changes in there results. In related ways, the approach shoul be useful for
studying mythology and folklore.

According to Naboya (2019) Supplemental instruction in Inorganic Chemistry is

a relatively recent creation, and is now being used as a method a complement
classroom instruction. This learning kit offer self-instructional modules that permit
self-placed learning. Since module is a single instructional kit dealing with a single
idea, it also variety of type to the instructional process. Modules differentiate between
different between learning styles, adapt to meet a range of differing learning needs,
and place the greatest burden on the learner. The modular approach to education is
based in the fact that learning is the best when it requires involvement in and control
of the learning process.

According to Yazon (2016), teaching and learning through the use of modular
method has been implemented in the United States by educators. In order to provide
better comprehension, that would-be-writer monitors the writing subject as a course,
which may provide better attention to the revenant information. Each module of the
system is intended for a specific type of person, as they respond frequently to each
course of action at the pace the learner.

According to Vegara (2017), the Alternative learning system efficient use of

learning modules. The advance elementary and secondary standardized test were
developed for self-study. Furthermore, Alternative learning framework promotes the
use of supplementary learning resources. Such as those developed by the facilitator
and those that match the students needs. It is important to contextualise learning
beacuse it teacher is how to think. The approved and validated Alternative learning
system (ALS) will improve to academic output of learners and provide lifelong skills
to there learners

According to Bala (2011), teachers across disciplines can make a difference by

producing instructional materials for use on the classroom and also for reference of
others in their specialized areas in the academic.

Meanwhile, instructional materials or audio-visual materials of course are not a

substitute for effective instruction. They are aids and complementary materials which
assist the teacher in the teaching-learning process.

However, Pekrun, et.al. (2010) showed that academic emotions are significantly
related to students' motivation, learning strategies, cognitive resources, self-
regulation, and academic achievement as well as to personality and classroom
antecedent.

According to Johnson (2011), instructional materials are specially designed

classroom tools Which contain instructional materials are specially designed
classroom tools which contain instructions for learners or teachers' specifications for
each increment of learning such as content to be learned, techniques of presentation,
the practice and use of that content and the modes of teaching associated with those
techniques.

Rizavi (2012), education occupies a central place in Philippine political,

economic, social and cultural life. It is a strategic priority to power economic progress
and ignites a forward-looking tolerant and inclusive society. Education is an
'expectation builder' and a 'force multiplier' Rizavi, 2012

Nardo, M.T.B, (2017), students engaged themselves in learning the concepts

presented in the module. They develop a sense of responsibility in accomplishing the
tasks provided in the module. They are learning how to learn; they are empowered.

The teacher assumes responsibility for tracking the students' progress. The
instructor may be contacted via e-mail, mobile, text message, or instant messaging,
among other methods.

Wherever practicable, the teacher may accompany students who need

remediation or help at their homes (Llego, n.d.). Teachers or local Government
officials will distribute printed modules to pupils, parents, or guardians.

Since Education is no longer held within the school, parents serve as a partners
of teachers in education. Parents play a vital role as home facilitators. Their primary
role in modular learning is to establish a connection and guide the child. (FlipScience,
2020)

The department of education (Dep-Ed notes that parents and guardians play a
variety of roles in modular learning, including Module-ator, Bundy-clock, and home
Innovator. As a Module-ator, they are responsible for collecting and submitting
printed Self-learning Modules (Slams) from and to schools or Baranggay halls at the
start and end of each week, as agreed upon by parents and school. As a Bundy-clock,
they are responsible for monitoring their child's timetable and workweek plan.

Due to the volume of topics or tasks required, they must ensure that the schedule
is adhered In order to prevent cramming or delays in submission, which could impair
the child's resultsm. Finally, as a home Innovator, they must have a positive learning
experience that enables their child to concentrate further on learning. It must be a
will-lit, well-ventilated room with few to no distractions in the building.

Roisin Donnelly and Marian Fitzmaurice (2005) for academic staff, there are
incremented pressures through incremented edifying loads, growing reporting and
administrative requisite and pressure to develop and reinforce their research profile.

According to Jeremiah Joven B. Joaquin, et al (October 2020), "Distance

education is broadly characterized as any form of learning experience where the
learner and the instructor and physically seperated from each other (not only by place
but also by time).

Use of Self-learning Modules in teaching is another form of individual used

instructions. This is called modular approach of teaching and learning (K. Kaya Sree,
2004) if Self-learning Modules are available on some topics, they can be given to the
students as assignments for Self-learning, Scientific attitude refers to an individual's

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Corona Virus- Coronovirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a

newly discovered Coronavirus. Most people who fall sick with COVID-19 will
experience mild to moderate symptoms and recover without special treatment.
Modular Distance Learning- Features individualized instruction that allows learners
to use Self-learning modules (SLMs) in print or digital format/electronic copy,
whichever is applicable to the learner. Learners under modular distance learning can
also use other resources such as learner's Materials, textbooks, activity sheets, study
guides, and other study materials.

Online Distance Learning- Distance Learning is an educational process where

students recieve instruction through online classes, video recordings, video
conferencing, or any other audio/ visual technology medium. It enables people to
receive education without having to be physically present in a classroom.

Face-to-face Learning- Is an instructional method where course content and learning

material are taught in person to a group of students. This allows for a live interaction
between a learner and an instructor. It is the most traditional type of learning
instruction. Learners benefit from a greater level of interaction with their fellow
students as well. In Face-to-face learning, students are held accountable for their
progress at the class's specific meeting date and time. Face-to-face learning ensures a
better understanding and recollection of lessons content and gives class members a
chance to bond with one another. Conventional way of teaching which uses variety of
strategies and different Instructional/ learning materials.

Television- Based Instructions- is one of DepEd's learning modalities along with

Radio-Based instruction, online, and, modular learning in the absence of face-to-face
learning due to Covid pandemic.

Radio-Based Instruction- Utilizes local community and other modes of broadcast,

the core learning modules are transformed into radio scripts which were produced for
public broadcast.
HYPOTHESIS OF THE STUDY

Based on the aforementioned problems, the following hypothesis will be considered:

1. There are significant difficulties encountered by the Grade 12 Students because of

the Effectiveness of Modular Distance Learning Modality.

2. There are no significant differences in the academic performance of the

respondents when based on Modular Distance Modality

3. There is a significant relationship between the Effectiveness of Modular Distance

Learning to the internet connection of the respondents.
CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY

As indicated in the title, this chapter explains the system of approach of

researchers towards the phenomena of the study. Moreover, this chapter precisely
outlines the research method, locale of the study, respondents of the study, the testing
hypothesis, research instruments, the data collection procedure and the statistical
treatment of the research

LOCATION OF THE STUDY

The study will be conducted within the vicinity of Brgy. Simbahan Dinalungan
Aurora specially in MDMMNHS wherein the respondent reside and referred to the
researcher. The location will also considered as highly populated province in the
country which can be a good basis for Grade 12 students in MDMMNHS but not a
representative of a whole Grade 12 students.

RESPONDENT OF THE STUDY

The researcher will choose some of the Grade 12 students of MDMMNHS will
be considered in the study which is the effect of modular learning in their Academic
performance as a whole. A randomised procedure will be conducted in choosing 30
Grade 12 students of MDMMNHS despite of their gender.

In order to determine the samples for this study, the researcher will choose and
ask permission for the enrolled Grade 12 students. The researcher will also be
considering the referrals of other people who are more appropriate to provide opinions
about the study as well as volunteering Grade 12 students of MDMMNHS.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The purpose of this study is to see how effective Modular Distance Learning is in
Grade 12 students of MDMMNHS. In this examination, the quantitative research
method will be used. Correlation was used in the quantitative method. Descriptive
design will be used also in identifying the different solutions to these challenges. The
quantitative approach entails gathering data that focuses on describing a phenomenon
across a larger number of people, allowing for the summmarization of characteristics
across groups or relationships.

INSTRUMENTATION

To Collect data or information, researchers will create and modify study

instruments. The opinions and recommendations of students were gathered through a
survey, particularly using questionnaires with open-ended questions. The instrument
will be subjected to face and content validation by experts prior to its implementation
in data collection to determine the suitability of each item in measuring the given
construct.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

The process in the systematic approach of the study was indicated as

administering a survey towards the respondents, the response will be later analyzed
and tabulated in the preceding chapter. The survey questionnaire will be distributed to
Grade 12 Students of MDMMNHS. The 5 minutes time is expected to elicit proper
answer from the respondents, this will also elide hastly and inaappropiate response
from the students. The result will be tabulated and shown in next Chapter

STATISTICAL TREATMENT OF DATA

The response of the respondents to the statement checklist were carefully tallied,
tabulated, and organized the data presented, analyzed, and interpret with the use of
weighted mean, frequency counts percentage and likert scale for verbal indicator.

The weighted mean will be used as a measurable of central tendency. It simply
