Classifying Countries

• MOST DEVELOP COUNTRIES (MDC) – Richest


industrialized and democratic nations in the world
• LESS DEVELOPED COUNTRIES (LDC) – countries with
little industrial development, little wealth, and
high population growth
• LEAST DEVELOPED COUNTRIES (LLDC) – Very low
capita income, low literacy rates, and very little in
the way of manufacturing
DIVISIONS

• Based on Brandt Report (1983) • The North are those countries that
German Chancellor Brandt are above the South 30 degrees
north

• The South is a geographical


convenience that most of the poor
world lies south of 30 degrees

• When used in global context, it is


an alternative name for
developing countries.
• Three quarter of the world
population
• Represents mainly three quarter
of the population
• Agrarian countries mostly
• Not economically stable and
politically volatile
• Possible source of conflict,
