SPEECH TEXT

“Utilization of English in the Development of Local Culture”

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

Om swastiastu
Shalom, Shalve and good morning everybody

The honorable adjudicators,

The honorable committee of english speech contest and all the virtual audiences

First of all, let's us thank God Almighty because of His love we are still given health and
strength in living this life. Secondly, let me introduce myself, my name is Cici Clardian Paji
Jeara, from Nusa Cendana University, On this occasion i want to deliver my speech entitled
“Utilization of English in the Development of Local Culture”.
Ladies and gentleman
Khaled Hosseini, in his book “And the Mountains Echoed” once said : If culture was a
house, then language was the key to the front door, to all the rooms inside without it you
ended up wayward, without a proper home or a legitimate identity.” It means that, a
particular language points to the culture of a particular social group. When we learn
languange, therefore, we are not only learning the alphabet, the grammar rules and the
arrangement of words, but we also learning the behavior of the society and its cultural
customs. English is one of language in the world, that considered and applied as international
language. Since then, it is very popular and have been spoken and learnt by almost people in
the world. The globalization of English language can be understood in various aspects; for
example, as an instrument for economic success or a tool for cross-cultural communication
and as a passing phase of lingua franca. However, the effects of this globalization have
affected the society in various ways; loss of cultural identity is one of the major effects that
are associated with the globalization of English. Indonesia is no exception. Our society today
is heavily influenced by western cultures, and Our ancestral heritage cultures are rarely well
preserved by the next generation since they are more interested in western culture. Then how
do we not lose our cultural identity in the midst of the development of the English language.
Developing local culture with English in this era of globalization is one way to increase our
love for local culture and its values.

Ladies and gentleman

I really support the government actions, especially the Ministry of Education, to include
Indonesian culture in English lessons, even though it is still limited. As a big country,
Indonesia consists of various ethnic groups in which each of them has its own cultures and
cultural heritages, it represent entire ways of life. Included in such ways of life are rules,
values, and expected behaviors. Developing our local culture is important because culture
contributes to building a sense of local identity and solidarity. Using english as a tool for
local culture development is a good idea, because developing a culture is not only based on
local people but we need to show the world our identity so that our cultural heritage is not
easily claimed by other countries as part of them. What should we do to introduce local
culture to the world by using English as a communication tool?
First, using social media such as Instagram, Tiktok, Facebook and YouTube as a medium by
creating creative content that introduces the local culture of each region using English.
Second, actively participate in inter-country cultural activities to show the beauty of our local
culture.
Third, making creative products based on local culture to be traded with foreign tourists as
well as introducing them to our culture.
Fourth, support the government, especially the ministry of tourism and the creative economy
in developing Indonesian tourism on the international stage by supporting the charm of
Indonesian tourism through Wonderful Indonesia, which is Indonesia's tourism promise to
the world, that Indonesia is rich in wonder, both in nature and in culture. Therefore, as part of
Indonesian society, we have an important role to play in supporting this promise by providing
a friendly environment for foreign tourists so that our local culture can develop and increase
the economic activities of local residents. We have to show them that Indonesia is a place for
everyone to enjoy the “World of Wonderful”
Ladies and Gentleman
As a younger generation we must have a sense of love and make efforts to develop the
culture of Nusantara to the international level because unique culture of the archipelago
makes the Indonesian nation known to other countries as a country rich in culture and
traditions. Wherever you go, bring your culture. Mahatma Gandi once said : A nation’s
culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of its people. So lets preserve our culture and take
action from now.
I think that's all my speech. I hope it is useful for you all our generation on developing our
culture. Thank you very much for the occasion.
Wassalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh
Om Shanti Shanti Shanti Om
Shalom
Shalve and Good morning for everybody

The use of English can help in preserving and promoting local cultures by serving as a global communication tool that allows the cultural identity of Indonesia to be shared with a wider audience. By integrating Indonesian culture into English lessons, local heritage can be highlighted internationally, preventing it from being misrepresented or claimed by others . Additionally, using social media platforms and participating in international cultural activities while communicating in English can showcase the uniqueness of Indonesian culture globally .

English globalization can lead to the erosion of cultural identity in Indonesian society, as the young generation might become more inclined towards Western influences and neglect their cultural heritage . Young Indonesians can contribute to the global promotion of local culture by leveraging their creativity and technological skills to create content in English that highlights cultural traditions, arts, and crafts. They can engage with international communities through social media platforms, participate in cultural exchange programs, and develop innovative products linked to their culture that can be shared globally. Their active involvement in initiatives supported by local and national authorities can further strengthen cultural promotion efforts .

Integrating local culture into English language lessons benefits Indonesian students by fostering a sense of cultural awareness and pride while improving their language skills. Social media can be effectively used to promote local culture in English by creating engaging and informative content that highlights the uniqueness of regional traditions and cultural activities. Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube can host videos and posts that demonstrate local customs, crafts, and performances, all presented in English to reach an international audience . Challenges in using English as a medium for developing local culture include the potential undervaluation of native languages and cultural nuances that could be lost in translation. Maintaining a balance is crucial to ensure that while local culture gains international recognition, it remains authentic and meaningful at home. To prevent cultural appropriation while promoting local culture through English, it is vital to maintain authenticity in cultural representation and to involve locals in the process.
