According to the laid down policy of the institution (Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa) that

Abstract
This SIWES report has comprehensively covered the four month period that I spent at
ASHIWARE FM 99.9 KATSINA-ALA BENUE STATE. This programme was able to expose me to
real life situations in my field of study and give me a practical perspective of my theoretical
knowledge from school. Chapter one of this report covered information about the SIWES
programme by ITF (Industrial Training Fund) and also the organisational chart and history of
my place of SIWES. Chapter two covers the entire activities I was involved in, equipment and
tools I encountered in the course of my 4 month programme. Chapter three covered summary,
conclusion and recommendations and the report concluded with references.

CHAPTER ONE
1.0 Introduction
The Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a mandatory
training for all students of higher institutions of learning to put in practice the
theoretical aspect of what they have learnt before graduation. The programme is
mainly designed to prepare students towards the challenges they will meet in the
future when given the opportunity to work.
It is aimed at exposing students to machines and equipment, professional work
methods and ways of safe-guarding the work areas and industries.
SIWES was established in the year 1973/1974 and was introduced to acquaint
students with the skills of handling employers. The industrial training fund (ITF)
solely founded the scheme during it formation years. But as the financial
involvement become unbearable to them, it withdraws from the scheme in 1979 to
both the national University commission (NUC) and the National board for
technological education (NBTE).
Later the federal Government in November 1984 inverted the management and
implementation of the SIWES programme to the ITF again, and it was effectively
taken over by ITF in July 1985 with the funding solely borne by the federal
government.
SIWES (Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme) is a scheme for the
duration of sixteen weeks (4 months) for polytechnics and twenty-four weeks (6
months) for universities. It is usually done in the first year (ND 1) in the
polytechnics and in the third year in universities depending on the institutions.

The effective management of Student’s Industrial Work Experience Scheme
(SIWES) has been as a result of the cooperation and well played roles of the
Federal government, ITF and supervising agencies.
Roles of the Federal Government
Federal government being the major party in the establishment of SIWES, has ever
since been involved in the management of SIWES. Some of the roles played are:
i. To make it mandatory for all ministries, companies and parastatals to
offer places of attachment for students in accordance with the provision
of Decree No 47 of 1971 as amended in 1990.
ii. To provide necessary and adequate funds to ITF through the Federal
ministries of industries.
1.1 Roles of Industrial Training Fund (ITF)
i. Provide logistics and materials needed to administer the scheme
ii. Supervise students through its Area Offices.
1.2 Aim and Objectives of SIWES
(a) To prepare student for their industrial work and situations they will meet
after graduation.
(b) For the student to acquire the theoretical aspect of they learnt in the class
room and put them into practical.
(c) SIWES build student moral and standard in order to fit in the modern
technology and equipment installed in the world organization today.
(d) If the students are practically involved in the scheme, the journey of their
academic is said to be complete, if not, it will be half way done.

(e) It also disciplines students and help them to gain experience and ensure
peaceful co-existence in real life involving practical in their programmes
1.3 Achievements Recorded By the Scheme
The technical reports on SIWES so far have shown that, the programme is
indeed a means of practicalising all works done or learnt during the student’s
theoretical aspect of their course of study. And some of the achievements
recorded by the scheme are as follows:
1. The scheme has helped the students in performing well after their course of
study as they experience what is written practically in the class room.
2. The scheme has also recorded success on how to maintain peace and human
relation among students of various institutions.
3. Student acquires vocational and desirable habit for work which is essential
to any successful occupation.

CHAPTER TWO
2.0 Resumption and Orientation
I was introduced to the department and various staff that I would be working
with /reporting to. Schedules of attendance, rules and regulations as well as my
duties were outlined to me.
2.1 Things Learnt/Done and Observed
This chapter outlines all the activities that were carried out as well as the
orientations/lectures had in the course of the four (4) months of training.
Below are the activities I carried out in this department.
Enlightened on proper studio behaviour
Taught about the basics of communication
News monitoring and reporting
Taught the basics of mass communication
Issuing of assignments
We were taught how to fill our log books
We went out for interview on the security in the state
Learnt the difference between a reporter and journalist
Learnt the difference between news guardians, newswriting and news
reporting
We were taught the basics of interviewing
Observation of news casting in the studio
Attendance of general meetings.
Taught about the basics of the microphone, its types and its uses
Learnt about the basics of editing and its uses.

Taught about the operation of equipment in the studio
Taught about the basics of news.
Learnt about the basics of radio
Carried out news writing.
We were taken to the music studio and learnt about sound check and
observation.
We learnt about the qualities of a good journalist
We were taught about jingles and how they can be produced.

2.3 Problems Encountered
Despite the intense and interesting learning experience, I was faced with some
challenges as follows:
1. Transportation from my home to my place of attachment cost a lot.
2. Students were not given total access to some very important information
which would have made this report richer.
3. Some of the activities were a bit to physical for me to be able to properly
cope

3.0 Summary, Conclusion and Recommendation
3.1 Summary
It is true that Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme has been a tremendous
help to students and has recorded a great deal of man power development that led
to the greater productivity in both private and public sector of the nation’s
economy.
This evidence shows that, the program has helped the students with needed
experience which they are likely to face after graduation. The industrial work
attachments have created a lot of impact in the area of boosting the knowledge and
working experience for every student that undergo this exercise before the
program.
3.2 Conclusion
My experience during the past 4 months have indeed been stressful and
challenging but I have, in the process, become better in my field of study and have
indeed learnt a lot from the staff and students of the department in general.
3.3 Recommendations
It is however recommended that:
i. More provisions should be made towards the support of internship of
students,
ii. The institution must confirm that each student partakes in the industrial
training programme by making sure that they pay every student a visit
before the end of the programme.
