A Narrative Report on Coastal Clean-Up Drive Activity
Last Febuary 18, 2023, an event called Coastal Clean-up Drive
Activity was held at Tondo, Barangay Washington, Surigao City and
participated by various students coming from the Criminology Department,
Custom Department, Education Department and BSBA Department and this
event is part of our Second Semester in Community Extension Services
(CES) guided by our subject teacher Mrs. Arjane Altizen. The clean-up
operation was in a friendly activity, the students observed the usual health
and safety protocols wearing face mask and gloves.
The clean-up starts around 6:00 to 9:00 o'clock in the morning.
Volunteers picked up trash along the shoreline and were able to collect
wastes which consisted of biodegradable, non-biodegradable and residual
wastes. Trash where also collected from nearby. At least 4 hours of cleaning
we gathered about 116 sacks of trash and that is good for now.
The activity ends well and it was another achievement which shows
the cooperation and enthusiasm of the students together with the help of
Barangay officials and the coordinator of the Community Extension Services.
PHOTO DOCUMENTATION
BEFORE
Figure 1. As we went to the area were we conducted our clean-up drive
activity, we observed that there are really lots of wastes which we can say
that can result to several effects such as bad impact on human health, harm
to animals and particularly to the environment. The area was surrounded by
mixed garbage thrown away by the people living in that area. It consists of
various garbage;s such as plastics, cellophane's, woods, unused blankets and
more. As you can also see in these figures, the drainage canal was almost
filled with garbage’s and it does have a bad smell. So the students then start
the said activity.
DURING
Figure 2. The participating students were divided to the assigned work area
then start the activity by picking since the garbage was everywhere. Some
were assigned to the drainage canal and shoreline. Each student brings their
own sack in which the garbage they collected will be put. As to health
protocols, students were required to wear face masks and gloves to ensure
their safety.
The area is so dirty, and the drainage canal are covered with trashes. And we
are having a hard time cleaning the area due to the large amount of garbage's
in the surroundings. We segregate the trashes we collected, all the plastic
bottles, and all the biodegradable and non-biodegradable.
We cleaned the drainage canal in order for the water to flow freely without
being blocked by some garbage. In this case, overflowing of waters will also
be prevented if a sudden rain will occur. Also, we are having a hard time on
pulling up the blankets and other fabric that were beneath the sand. However,
we successfully made it by helping and supporting each other as a team.
We really had a great time in doing this activity, even though the weather
that time is not so good because it was raining the whole time while we are
cleaning, but it doesn’t stop us from doing what we intended to do. It was so
tiring yet fulfilling. All the hard works are all paid off. Because as we can
see the result after we clean the area we can say that there’s a big difference,
from dirty to clean.
AFTER
Figure 3. When the area was cleaned and cleared, the students were told to
get their full sacks and put it to where it is easy for the garbage truck to
collect. Since we had a great cooperation with the barangay officials, the
garbage will be take care by them, they say. The unity of the students makes
the activity easy and was done quickly. Their contribution will surely have a
great impact, not just to the community but also to the marine life.
The Coastal Clean-Up Drive Activity has given us the opportunity to
become a more productive individual. It’s such a great privilege for us to be
part of this activity, because we are able to experience how to protect and
care for our environment by simply cleaning our surroundings. And because
of unity and perseverance we make it to achieve our goal. And it serve as a
lesson for us to care for our environment, because if we continue on
destroying our natural resources, time will come that there will be a
phenomenon that will occur in our environment like typhoon or floods, our
environment cannot protect us anymore because it is already damage. And it
is our source of food for survival so we really need to care and protect our
environment for us to survive.
