Sermon of The Apostle Peter

Peter gave an effective sermon after receiving the Holy Spirit at Pentecost that led to thousands converting. He spoke loudly so all could hear, addressed doubts that the disciples were drunk by quoting scripture, and preached about Jesus' resurrection and the need to repent and be baptized in his name. His message centered on Christ and calling people to repentance through faith in Jesus for the forgiveness of sins. Many in the audience were pricked in their hearts and asked what they should do, to which Peter replied they must repent and be baptized to receive the Holy Spirit.

THE SERMON OF PETER.

In this lesson we shall see how Apostle Peter used the knowledge of preaching after the

baptism of the Holy Spirit. How did he be able to preach that way which brought about

incredible results.

Peter stood up to preach, this was to impress people to listen to him. He used his voice to

proclaim the message appropriately so that everybody heard and understood. The bible says, The

bible says, But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye

men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my

words. Acts 2:14, KJV.

As we have studied we also have to be in good appearance before the audience and use

the loud voice enough to make them hear simply.

The scriptures say, people around apostles thought that they were drunk. Apostle Peter

used their doubts as the bridge to deliver the desired message; their questions were answered

appropriately to make them know that it was not drunkardness.

Apostle Peter answered, “For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the

third hour of the day. But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to

pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and

your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall

dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my

Spirit; and they shall prophesy: And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth

beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke: The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the

moon into blood, before the great and notable day of the Lord come.” Acts 2:15-20, KJV.

He talked directly to them proving them using the word of God. As preachers today we

have to clear the doubts of people using the word of God. Apostle Peter referred the bible

prophecy to assure people that they were filled with the Holy Spirit. He was actualizing his

sermons.

Apostle Peter used the attention of people as opportunity to tell them the truth, he

preached about the pouring of the Holy Spirit and the sign of the end time. As preachers we have

to use effectively the opportunities that God gives us to deliver His word to people.

Again Apostle Peter explained to men that they had to call upon the name of the Lord to

be saved. They were to be saved because of transgression and now he made it clear that Jesus

was the man through which we are saved. As we are preachers also we have to explain to people

about the transgression of the law of God and by we which we are under doom, to escape it we

have to repent and believe in Jesus Christ. We have to make people understand why they need

Christ for their salvation. He reproved people and called them for repentance because they had

crucified their savior.

He told people that Jesus had been resurrected to prove it he used reminded them about

King David who spoke about the coming of Messiah in the end time. Every sermon should be

supported by the Holy Scriptures, present and the past events. Apostle Peter did not comfirm

himself that he was an apostle by speaking his own words and command people to do it but he

used the scriptures to prove his sermon’s truth.

In Peter’s sermon, Jesus Christ was the center of the message as now we need to make

Christ the need of the people. Profane words and meaningless speeches should be put away.

The response of the audience was that, they realized they were in danger of perishing,

danger of corruption, and now they wanted to know what to do. The bible says, “Now when they

heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles,

Men and brethren, what shall we do? Acts 2:37.

Peter explained the action to do for the inquiring minds, he said, “Then Peter said unto

them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of

sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” Acts 2:38.

We have to explain the need of people, not leaving them in questions, the solution for

their guilty condition should be put clear. And the solution is found in Jesus Christ. The

testimony says, “To these the gospel must be proclaimed. They were to be called to repentance.

The wonderful truth that through Christ alone could remission of sins be obtained, was to be

made plain.” Acts of Apostles, p. 31.

God needs us to preach the message of repentance. “The Lord desires His servants

today to preach the old gospel doctrine, sorrow for sin, repentance, and confession. We want old-

fashioned sermons, old-fashioned customs, old-fashioned fathers and mothers in Israel. The

sinner must be labored for, perseveringly, earnestly, wisely, until he shall see that he is a

transgressor of God's law, and shall exercise repentance toward God and faith toward the Lord

Jesus Christ.” Manuscript 82, 1894.
