NOTES
Lesson 1 – HAIR COLORING
I - Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
1. Understand the fundaments of hair coloring
2. Analyze the condition of hair and scalp before hair coloring
3. Prepare the tools and materials used in hair coloring
4. Perform skin test and patch test
5. Discuss hair coloring applications
6. Apply coloring products on hair
7. Identify occupational health and safety standards; and
8. Enumerate post – service activities

II – Study these Terms


o Allergy – abnormal reaction of a body to a substance.
o Barrier Cream – a cream used to protect skin from contacts with hazardous products.
o Base Color – client’s natural hair color
o Complementary Colors – any two colors situated directly across from each other on the color wheel.
o Cortex – middle layer of the shaft.
o Cuticle – the other layer of the hair shaft.
o Dermis – thick layer of fibrous and elastic tissue that gives the skin its flexibility and strength.
o Disulfide Bonds – sulfur link of two amino acids.
o Elasticity Test – a test where a strand of a hair is stretch up to check its elasticity.
o Epidermis – outer layer of the skin that is thin, tough, and protects the internal organ of the body; prevents
bacteria, viruses, and other foreign substance from entering the body.
o Hydrogen Peroxide – an agent used for oxidizing when coloring the hair.
o Incompatibility Test – a test done to check for hair substance, chemical minerals, and salts that could have an
adverse reaction to the hair when a new chemical is applied on.
o Medulla – the center part of the hair shaft.
o Melanin – coloring pigment of the hair.
o Patch Test – a test used to check the allergy or sensitivity to the mixture of the products.
o Permanent Color – the color containing molecules that penetrate the cuticle and are absorbed into the cortex.
o Pigment – color matter of the hair.
o Porosity Test – ability to absorb moisture.
o Semi-Permanent Hair Color – color molecules deposited in the hair cuticle or under the open cuticle; hair color
that will lighten each time the hair is shampooed.
o Strand Test – a test used to monitor the color development.
o Virgin Hair – hair that has not been chemically treated or bleached.
