Notes - Transformation (Enlargement)

This document provides instructions for enlarging 2D shapes through enlargement, which is a transformation that changes the size of a shape by a scale factor while maintaining similarity. It outlines the steps to enlarge a shape as: 1) identify vertices and scale factor, 2) represent vertex positions as vectors from the center of enlargement, 3) multiply the vectors by the scale factor, and 4) use the results to determine the new positions of the enlarged vertices. Examples demonstrate applying the steps to enlarge different shapes.

Lesson Objective Steps-To-Success

Enlarge a 2D shape by a scale factor (+) [1] Identify the vertices and the scale factor
[2] Count the steps from the centre of enlargement to
one of the vertices
[3] Multiply by the scale factor (+)
[4] Count the steps from the centre of enlargement
using the new vector
[5] Repeat the steps for all vertices
[6] Make sure the shape is enlarged.

Recap

Evaluate the following vectors:

3 ( 23) 6 (−12) 5 (−5

−7 )

- An enlargement changes the size of the shape to give similar image.

- For enlargement, it always has a centre of enlargement and a scale factor.
- To do enlargement, use Vector’s Scalar Multiplication (refer to starter question).

Note: You can draw the ‘rays’ to make sure that your image is on the line

What do you notice with the object and the image of the above examples?

What does the scale factor represent? You can use your own words to explain, as long as you
understand.
