abilities are the primary means of communication in any language. It is one of the most
prevalent ways to obtain information, whether for enjoyment or for research. Readers who
read a lot can expand their knowledge. According to Akyol (2007, p.15), reading is a process
in which the reader attempts to understand a book and generates new meaning depending on
what he or she has already read. It can assist students learn new things by reading a lot.
Reading is frequently the primary goal of students in nations where English is taught as a
foreign language. According to Ahmad, Al-Shboul, Nordin, Rahman, Burhan, and Madarsha
(2013), the most important for obtaining modern knowledge is reading. It is a fundamental
receptive talent.
In the other hand, a college student especially in non-EFL students frequently exhibits
stress, uneasiness, or anxiety when reading. According to Shri (2010), anxiety is a subjective
sensation generated by a variety of autonomic and somatic sensations such as unease,
apprehension, anticipation, or apprehensive concern. Based on the previous concept of
anxiety, it represents learners' reaction to learning something. As a result, an anxiety reaction
has significantly hampered students' ability to engage successfully in reading anxiety.
Anxiety is a common emotional, reasonable, and anticipated response to a real or possible
threat (Shri, 2010). As a result of this condition, the individual perceives himself/herself as
incapable of doing the assignment, as well as anxiety and panic of losing attention.
Much of the research focuses on talks about listening, speaking, and writing (Horwitz
et al., 1986). Reading has received little attention. It is commonly known that people in
Indonesia have a low level of reading interest. Several international and national surveys
reported on it, one of which was reported by the United Nations Educational Scientific and
Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2012. Reading anxiety in L2 is challenging, according
to Liu and Samimy (2012), because it is influenced by a complex combination of inextricably
related linguistic and non-linguistic elements. As a result, it cannot be denied that students
have a poor interest in reading for some reasons. First, there is a lack of reading motivation.
Students at the university level are most likely to face this issue when they are required to
study a complex textbook that is unappealing to them since motivation helps them to pay
attention and absorb the text both intellectually and emotionally. If they desire to read a book
but don't know what the book is about, they will become unmotivated. Students cannot read
comprehensively unless they are motivated. Based on the explanation above, it is clear that
anxiety is one of the most common challenges that students have when reading in English.
