In this revision, the following modifications have been made: a) Material to be used in the manufacture of fittings have been made more specific; 1b) A-clause on ‘terminology’ has been added; c) Provisions on ‘chamfering’ have been included; a) Amendments issued have been suitably incorporated; ©) An Attempt has been made to align the provisions of this standard with ISO 49- 1983 ‘Malleable cast iron fittings threaded to ISO 7/1°, issued by the International Organization for Standardization ( ISO ); 1. SCOPE 1.1 This standard covers requirements for follow- ing types of malleable cast iron pipe fittings threaded in accordance with IS : 554-1975 for ‘general purposes for the transmission of fluid and gas upto the limit of pressure and temperature specified in 1.3: a) Elbows induding twin elbows, union elbows and side outlet elbows, b) Tees including pitcher tees and side outlet tees, ¢) Crosses, ‘Dimensions for pipe threads where pressure tight Joint re requted oo tke threads ( swendrabion) £) All the ten parts have been merged into ‘one standard. General requirements have been dealt within Section 1 of the standard and the specific requirements of the various ficings have been given in Sections 2 to 10; an g) Values have been given in SI Units only. 0.3 It may be noted that the dimensions specified in this standard are only those that are essential for interchangeability. r dimensions are left to the discretion of the manufacturer depending on the end use of the fittings. In order to assist the manufacturer to supply the exact requirements, purchaser may furnish full details, such as service Pressure, temperature and other particulars relat- ing to the end use of the fittings. 0.4 Illustrations used jout this standard are diagrammatical, that is, the form of reinforce- ment and the design of the female ends, have ‘been shown for the purpose of illustration only. 4) Bends including long sweep bends and return bends, €) Sockets, £) Bushing and hexagon nipples, g) Backnuts, h) Caps and plugs, and i) Unior 1.2 Dimensions which are not included in the standard are left to the discretion of the manufac turer depending on the end use of the fittings. 1.3 These fittings shall be suitable for working pressure of up to 1 MPa in the case of water and up to 0-7 in the case of steam, air, gas and oil at a temperature not exceeding 100°C. 18 1 1879 . 1987 SECTION 1 GENERAL 2. The out- side diameter of the test piece is measured over the points 45 degree off the mould joints. The test piece shall be placed on the equipment as shown in Fig. 5 (a hand vice may be used in place ), and shall be compressed gradually at the rate of 17 to 20 mm/min until the amount of compression reaches 5 percent of the original out- side diameter for fittings of size design: below, and 3 percent of the original fittings above size designation 2. LOT B-1.1 All the malleable cast iron pij fittings of the same type and manufactured from the same cast of metal shall be grouped together to form a. lot. B.2, SELECTION OF SAMPLES B-2.1 Sample Size of Visual and Dimension- al Characteristics — Those cast iron fittings which are complicated in design shall be indivi- dually examined for visual characteristics, such as reinforcement, threads and finish. For other cast iron fittings, the visual examination shall be done on sample ‘pieces. The visual examination shall include verification for material, freedom from surface defects, finish and spanuer sizes (wherever applicable). After completing the visual examina- tion, the fittings shall be inspected for dimensions including tolerances, short dimensions and mass for 100 pieces. The sample sizes and criteria for acceptance of the lot for these characteristics are given in Table B-l. B-2.2 Scale of Sampling for Repeat Pressure ‘Tests — If the lot has been successfully tested for visual and dimensional characteristics, sample fitt- ings from each lot shall be selected at random for conducting repeat pressure test. ‘The sample sizes find eriteda Tor acceptance of lot in respect of these characteristics are given in Table B-2. If the number of defective pieces ‘exceeds the acceptance number, the lot shall be rejected and if agreed upon may be resubmitted after necessary reprocessing of the material. In respect of tests for repeat pressure, the Jot shall be accep- ted if the number of defective fittings in the first sample is less than or equal to acceptance number for the first stage and shall be rejected if the number of defective fittings is equal to or greater than the rejection number. If the number lies be- tween acceptance and rejection number of the first sample, a second sample shall be tested and the combined total number of defectives in both the samples shall be compared with the acceptance number for the second stage, The lot shall be ‘accepted at the second stage if the cumulative number of defectives does not exceed the corres: ponding acceptance number.
