Revision 2-3

If an airplane is consuming 95 pounds of fuel per hour at a cruising altitude of 6,500 feet and
the groundspeed is 173 knots, how much fuel is required to travel 450 NM?
Time = Distance / Groundspeed
Time = 450 NM / 173 knots = 2.60 hours
Fuel required = Fuel consumption rate x Time
Fuel required = 95 pounds/hour x 2.60 hours = 247 pounds

If an airplane is consuming 12.5 gallons of fuel per hour at a cruising altitude of 8,500 feet
and the groundspeed is 145 knots, how much fuel is required to travel 435 NM?
Time = Distance / Groundspeed
Time = 435 NM / 145 knots = 3.00 hours
Fuel required = Fuel consumption rate x Time
Fuel required = 12.5 gallons/hour x 3.00 hours = 37.5 gallons

GIVEN:
True course: 105°.
True heading: 085°.
True airspeed: 95 kts.
Groundspeed: 87 kts.
Determine the wind direction and speed.
By using E6B
020° and 32 knots.

GIVEN:
Distance of course: 9 mi.
Distance flown: 95 mi.
Distance to fly: 125 mi.
To converge at the destination, the total correction angle would be
9/95*60= 5.68
9/125*60= 4.32
5.68 + 4.32= 10°.
An airplane departs an airport under the following conditions:
Airport elevation: 1000 ft.
Cruise altitude: 9,500 ft.
Rate of climb: 500 ft/min.
Average true airspeed: 135 kts.
True course: 215°
Average wind velocity: 290° at 20 kts.
Variation: 3°W.
Deviation: -2°.
Average fuel consumption: 13 gal/hr.
Determine the approximate time, compass heading, distance, and fuel consumed during the
climb.
9500 - 1000= 8500, 8500/500 = 17 minutes.
(13 / 60) * 17 = 3.68 gallons.

By using E6B to find heading = (223).

Compass heading 223 + 3 - 2 = 224.

By using E6B to find groundspeed = (128 kt).

(128/60) * 17 = 36.26 NM

GIVEN:
Wind: 175° at 20 kts.
Distance: 135 NM.
True course: 075°.
True airspeed: 80 kts.
Fuel consumption: 105 lb/hr.
Determine the time en route and fuel consumption.
By using E6B to find groundspeed = (81 kt).
(135/81) * 60 = 100 minutes = 1 hr and 40 minutes.
(135/81) * 105 = 175 Ib.
An airplane descends to an airport under the following conditions:
Cruising altitude: 10,500 ft.
Airport elevation: 1,700 ft.
Descends to: 1,000 ft AGL.
Rate of descent: 600 ft/min.
Average true airspeed: 135 kts.
True course: 263°.
Average wind velocity: 330° at 30 kts.
Variation: 7°E.
Deviation: +3°
Average fuel consumption: 11.5 gal/hr
Determine the approximate time, compass heading, distance, and fuel consumed during the
descent.
10,500 - 1,700 - (1,000 of AGL) = 7,800.
7,800/600 = 13 minutes.

(13*11.5)/ 60 = 2.49 gallons.

By using E6B to find heading = (275).

Compass heading 275 + 3 - 7 = 271.

By using E6B to find groundspeed = (120 kt).

(120/60) * 13 = 26 NM

When checking the course senstivity of a VOR receiver, how many degrees should the OBS
be rotated to move the CDI from the center to the last dot on either side.
10° to 12°

When usine VOT to makes VOR receiver check, the CDI should be centered and the OBS
should indicate that the aircraft is on the..................radial?
360 radial.
If the heading is 070°M, 068°C and 072°T the variation and deviation are?
MH = 070°M
CH = 068°C
TH = 072°T

Variation = MH - TH
Variation = 070°M - 072°C
Variation = -2°

Deviation = MH - CH
Deviation = 070°M - 068°T
Deviation = 2°W

A pilot is flying on a heading of 358°C. Variation is +2° and deviation is 4°W. If drift is 3°P the
aircraft track is:
First, we need to convert the heading to magnetic heading:
MH = TH + Variation
MH = 358°C + 2°
MH = 360°M

Next, we need to correct for deviation:

CH = MH + Deviation
CH = 360°M - 4°W
CH = 356°M

Finally, we need to correct for drift:

Track = CH + Drift
Track = 356°M + 3°P
Track = 359°
You fly from 36°30'N to 51°10'N along the Greenwich meridian. You will cover a distance, in
nm, of:
Distance = 60 x Latitude Difference

Given:
Starting latitude = 36°30'N
Ending latitude = 51°10'N

Latitude difference = Ending latitude - Starting latitude

Latitude difference = (51 + 10/60) - (36 + 30/60)
Latitude difference = 14°40'

Distance = 60 x Latitude difference

Distance = 60 x 14°40'
Distance = 60 x 14.67
Distance = 880.2 nm (rounded to one decimal place)

Heading 074°T, TAS 230 kts, track 066°T, groundspeed 242 kts. What is the wind velocity?
Heading 074°T, TAS 230 kts, track 066°T, groundspeed 242 kts. What is the wind velocity?
Groundspeed = True Airspeed + Headwind Component
or
Groundspeed = True Airspeed - Tailwind Component

Given:
Heading = 074°T
TAS = 230 kts.
Track = 066°T
Groundspeed = 242 kts

First, we need to calculate the heading and groundspeed components:

Headwind Component = TAS x sin(Track - Heading)
Groundspeed Component = TAS x cos(Track - Heading)

Headwind Component = 230 x sin(066°T - 074°T)

Headwind Component = -33.8 kts

Groundspeed Component = 230 x cos(066°T - 074°T)

Groundspeed Component = 206.5 kts

Next, we can use the formula to calculate the wind velocity:

Wind Velocity = Groundspeed - True Airspeed
Wind Velocity = Groundspeed - (TAS - Headwind Component)
Wind Velocity = 242 - (230 - (-33.8))
Wind Velocity = 242 - 230 + 33.8
Wind Velocity = 45.8 kts
