husband, wife and five children. The head of this family is Yaakup Bin Ahmad, and his wife
is Ryedah Binti Sahari. We have done the interview with the mrs Ryedah because her
husband is not in a good condition to be interview. Mrs ryedah and her family has been live
in Patau-Patau 2 village almost 18 years. All their children still go to school as the first child
study at Industrial Training Institute. As for the rest still in secondary, primary and
kindergarden school.
Mrs ryedah is housewife but sometimes she sells food from surplus of sea catch and her
husband works as fisherman but nowdays her husband helps his younger brother to repair
their parent’s house. It is because her husband has problem with his shoulder so he can not
work hard like going to the sea and taking break from work.
The house that they live right now is built from the wood of a military house that has
been abandoned for a long time. The condition of their house is not in a good shape. due to
their house being over the sea and exposed to strong windy weather, their house almost
collapsed. they face serious damage such as leaking ceilings and pillars that bear the weight
of their houses are quite unstable. Because of that their house cannot bear too much burden.
Mrs Ryedah said that on Eid al-Fitr they will go to the hall to celebrate the festival to avoid
the arrival of guests to her house because the house is not strong enough to accommodate
many people at one time. They also face water problems such as low water pressure due to
the use of water from petronas gas stations. recently they faced an electrical problem where
the main electricity meter in their house caught fire and cause their house do not have
electricity for few days. Luckily this problem was solved by her husband's younger brother.
Not only that, but an electric pole near their house also collapsed and fell on their house. this
causes them to temporarily move to a nearby family place.
The family income in uncertain. Mrs ryedah state that sometimes they can get rm1000
per months but in past three months, to get this amount of money is very difficult because the
problem that they face. For school allowed, it be said that half using their money that from
their saving, but other half they get financial assistance. They do not have own vehicle, so
they must pay their children transportation such as fee to the people who sent their child. so
far, her husband's medical costs are covered by herself which amounts to rm100.
They get help from various departments from the government. The government
department is the Community Welfare Department, E-kasih, Malaysian Fisheries
Development Authority. The help given is every month. The assistance provided by the
community welfare department is in the form of money and repairs to their homes. As for e-
kasih, aid is given in the form of money, food, and necessities. Next, the Malaysian Fisheries
Development Authority provides allowance assistance to fishermen. the help their children
receive is from Baitulmal.
Their hope to get out from the poverty is the government takes seriously the problems
faced by fishermen and the plight of fishermen's families. in addition to giving proper
assistance and not cutting the amount of assistance given to them. Also hope as parents to see
their children study higher and get a good job to help them get out of this poverty and help
their to life comfortable life unlike now.
