                          Introduction
Background of the Study
Music has shaped cultures and societies around the world,
passed down from generation to generation. It has the power to alter
one’s mood, change perceptions and inspire change. While everyone has
a personal relationship with music, its effect in the culture around
us may not be immediately apparent. So,how does music affect modern
culture and society? The impact of music in society is broad and
deeply ingrained in our history. To demonstrate how deeply our lives
are affected by music lets delve into the sociological effects of
music and how it affects culture.
The music is a form of art that expresses emotions and feelings
of people. It is an auditory experience that can create mood or evoke
emotions. The music can also be used to communicate with others but
can be defined differently, typically classified by genre, period and
culture.
Music has always been an integral part of Filipino culture and
society. The country is known for its vibrant music scene, which is
made of various genres such as pop, rock, hip-hop,and traditional
Filipino music.Music is not just a form of entertainment in the
Philippines but also a medium of expression and social commentary. It
reflects the country’s diverse cultural heritage and its people’s
experiences and struggles.
                                              2
In the recent years, the music industry in the Philippines has
grown exponentially, with many local artists achieving international
recognition. This growth has been accompanied by a significant
increase in music consumption, particularly among young
Filipinos.Music is now easily accessible through various platforms
such as streaming services and social media, making it an even more
integral part of everyday life.

Statement of the Problem
The statement of the problem of this research paper is to
examine the effect of music in Filipino Culture and Consumer
Behavior n San Roque,Northern Samar.Specifically, the paper aims to
explore the various genres of music that are popular in the country
and their impact in different aspects of Filipino culture in terms
of Playing instruments,festival/dances,and Genres of
music.Additionally, the research seeks to address the gap in
knowledge regarding the role of music in shaping Filipino culture
and consumer behavior and to provide a comprehensive understanding
of its impact.

Theoretical Framework
Music theory
This theory allows musicians, producers, composers ad
instrumentalists the ability to understand the language of
music.Laying a musical foundation with this terminology and
vocabulary will help you collaborate with colleagues, build
confidence in your music making skills and help you understand the
basics of the music you want to create.According to Rothstein (2020)
“to composers, producers, musicians, and instrumentalists the
development of each line in every lyrics of songs is very important
since it rooted based in their feelings, emotions and experiences
they have encountered from present or in past times” which aims to
share us their story which we can relate too.Through this method
they can share their skills in making music, helps them to boost
confidence and overcome every problems. In a simple manner a normal
people who loves and listening to music also uses it too in building
their self-esteem and cope up with those challenges in life,
together in being an inspirer to create their own by learning basics
of music.
Functionalist Theory
This theory focuses on the contribution the music industry
makes to society overall.Music is a functional way to communicate
                                                              6
feelings and beliefs to many different cultures and communities
(Kelley S., 2014).The distribution of music globally not focuses
only about giving entertainment and about emotions and feelings of
artists but it also provides intrinsic things also background of
particular community coupled with its beliefs and cultures.According
to functionalist perspective of sociology, each aspect of society is
interdependent and contributes to society’s stability and
functioning as a whole.
Institutional Theory
This theory aims to explain the basic premise that suggests that an
organization’s tendency toward conformity with predominant norms,
traditions and social influences in their internal and external
environments will lead to homogeneity among organizations in their
structures and practices.(Carpenter, V. & Feroz E., 2001) The term
“institution” includes customs, social habits, laws, way of living,
and mode of thinking. As an institution everyone’s openness to the
influence of modern times is necessary for better change. By a song
artwork with the title of a certain country/nation/community we find
out what is the status of it, including the norms, traditions they
are celebrating, following social influences, laws they obeyed,
habits and what kind of living they treasure.Every humanbeing has
their own style of living so it is important to know how they act
and survive to this kind of living that matters as becoming part of
society and institutions.

                       Review of Related Literature
Foreign Literature
Music has been studied extensively in the context of its effect on
human behavior and emotions.Several studies have shown that music
can have a profound impact on people’s attitudes, beliefs and
behaviors. For instance, research has demonstrated that “music can
affect mood, memory, and cognitive processing(Thoma
et.al.,2013).Music has also been shown to have therapeutic effects,
with some studies showing that “it can reduce stress and anxiety
levels”(Chanda and Levitin, 2013).
                                                       8
In the context and culture of society, music has been shown to
play a significant role in shaping people’s identities and
experiences.Music can serves as a medium of expression, allowing
individuals to communicate their thoughts and feelings about social
and political issues.Moreover,”hip-hop music has been used as a
platform for social commentary and political activism in many
countries”, including the Philippines (Widodo and Heriawan, 2020).
Music can also serves as a form of cultural preservation,
helping to maintain and promote traditional values and
beliefs.Traditional Filipino music,additionally,has been “an
important part of the country’s cultural heritage, reflecting its
unique history and traditions” (Garcia,2018).

Local Studies
Music education embraces so many programs like
electives, required, live classroom music, humanities and integrated
components.Furthermore, the umbrella term would be too broad and
meaningless.Among many the definition, considered here is from the
perspective from of an envisaged good music education program which
is,”one that improves a student’s ability to discriminate,
understand and respond meaningfully to music expressive of worthy
human feelings” (Mark, 2013,p. 246).
Therefore, music education context would be understood in terms
of the environment that supports the learning music, the quality of
the program, use of technology and facilities that go along with
it.These would involve the nature of the music classrooms and their
                                                             9
proximity to other buildings as well as the stock of music
instruments and their condition (Abril & Gault, 2008).Generally, the
learning environment, school facilities and their state play an
important role in motivating learners to participate in any learning
activity.Lyons(2001) observed that the power of influence is so
great that it exceeds family factors, socio-status, behavior and
frequency of availability at school put together.
Man is a social being needing the social environment (culture)
and all factors in it such as the neighborhood, friends, siblings to
reach that complete life based companionship and interaction. With
all these socializing agents at play in one’s life, it follows that
an individual is its product thereof.Consequently, behavior exhibited
by everyone at a various times of our lives and circumstances
reveals what kind of social interplay on went through. For instance,
a student may not choose music as a subject because its value was
never emphasized in the family and the opposite is true.
It should be said however that very few studies have been
conducted in the socio-cultural influence to participation in music,
perhaps because of the complexity of culture as it varies from
society to society and from generation to generation (O’Neill,
2001).Due to the scarcity in literature particularly in this
variable socio-cultural factors, the researcher was prompted to
undertake this study in order to help bridge the gaps
identified.Below are some of the social-cultural factors drawn from
a vast list to help understand how they determine students’
participation in high school music programs.
                                                                             10
Assumptions of the Study
The Music has a possible effects to the Filipino culture and
Consumer Behavior, hence,by those following research and studies it
was illustrated that proven its existence. Many of us who consume and
listening to our favorite music has several opinions or explanations
of its good uses in daily lives. In this way the researcher widen
their knowledge about this topic which emphasize the effective usage
of music in Filipino culture and Consumer Behavior. The statements of
this theories are mostly related to this study with the same
objectives that are focus on the development and creating good
relationship between the Effects of Music in Filipino Culture and

Sources and other Sources of Data
The researcher will use books, journals, unprinted data
from the internet and some opinion of respected people and
professionals as source of data for this study.
Statistical Tool Used
The researcher will tabulate the data which will be
gathered. Two forms of analysis will be used; the first form
is the Arithmetic mean to test the hypothesis.
a. For percentage computation is:
                                                        15

                                        n
          Where:
            % = percentage
f = number of respondents for every item
n = total number of respondents
The next form of data analysis is the Arithmetic mean used
to test the hypothesis.

This formula is used to test the significance of
correlation coefficient of this study. To determine the
reliability of the research instrument, the researcher will
use the Pearson’s R.
   Where:
R = the Pearson product moment coefficient of correlation
   N = respondents
∑ xy = the sum of the product of x and y
   ( ∑ x ) (∑ y ) = the product of the sum of ( ∑ x ) and the sum of (∑ y )
