Distance Relay Testing Guide

This document discusses distance relay testing capabilities in the Omicron test software. It allows users to: 1) Define distance zones and test points manually or import them from relay settings files. 2) Perform shot tests at predefined test points to check zone reaches and trip times. 3) Conduct check tests that verify zone boundaries by testing at tolerance limits. 4) Run search tests that automatically find exact zone boundaries using a bisection search method.

Distance

> Dedicated test module for tests in the impedance plane for distance relay
characteristics
> Several ways to set up the test parameters:
> Manual distance zone definition
> RIO import of distance parameters
> XRIO converter*) (per relay type) mapping relay parameters to zone definition
> Import filter (generic XML or per relay type) filling XRIO data with actual relay
data

*) Stand-alone or contained in a PTL test template –

Manual distance zone definition

> If you cannot import RIO (XRIO) data from the actual relay, you can simply
create your own characteristics

XRIO

> XRIO files (extended Relay Interface by OMICRON) can be exported from
SIEMENS DIGSI, Schneider electric and from ABB PCM 600
> This creates a file with the relay settings for the OMICRON test software

Zones created from XRIO Converter

> Load the PTL template or XRIO Converter for your relay under test:
> All relevant relay parameters are defined

> Import the relay settings with the related import filter
> The relay parameters are filled with the relay setting values
> The PTL template test modules are linked to the actual settings

> Click in the graph, add the test points into the table. An automatic test is
performed and the trip time is assessed.

Definition of test points

> Define test points relative to zones.

> Relative shots give more generic tests. It can be quickly applied to another
relay without changing the test point settings.

Check test (Advanced Distance)

> Tests are performed on the tolerance borders

> The test is considered to be ”OK”, if trip times inside and outside the zone
are correct. The exact border is somewhere between lower and upper
tolerance
> Fast and effective

Search test (Advanced Distance)

> Automatically find the exact zone boundaries by placing search lines. The
test is carried out with a minimum of shots using the bisection method.
