Session 6: Who is God as the Holy Spirit
Learning objective:
● To understand what it means when the Holy Spirit hovers
● To know the Hebrew and Greek names for the Spirit of God
● To understand the role of the Holy Spirit in Christ’s work of salvation
Genesis 1:2 - The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep.
And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
What does the term “hovering” mean?
● Covering
● Protection
● The second character we are introduced to is the Spirit of God
● The Spirit of God hovers over what hasn’t been formed or made yet similar to how a
mother hen hovers over her eggs
● Why does the mother hen hover? As a sign of protection from predators or intruders
What does the Spirit of God mean in Hebrew and Greek?
● The Hebrew name for Spirit is ‘Ruach’
● The Greek name for Spirit is ‘Pneuma’
● ‘Ruach’ and ‘Pneuma’ mean wind, breath, or mind
Genesis 2:7 - then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into
his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.
● This shows us that without the Spirit of God Adam wouldn’t have become a living
creature, so without the Holy Spirit we are dead.
● Also, Adam was not fully formed without the Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit accompanies
the birth of someone or something like the birth of Jesus Christ
Luke 1:35 - And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the
power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called
holy—the Son of God.
● The Holy Spirit also helps in the new birth of every person that chooses to follow
Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is like a virgin because He is pure and innocent
(without sin)
● John 14:26 shows us that the Holy Spirit helps in the work that Christ has already done,
and that a special event that follows on after the resurrection of Jesus Christ is the
sending down of the Holy Spirit.
● The resurrection of Jesus Christ is when the seed comes out of the ground as a Vine
with branches on it. Colossians 3:1 - Since you have been raised to new life with Christ,
set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s
right hand.
● So when Jesus Christ raised Himself from the grave, He raised anyone who chooses to
follow Him. The Holy Spirit is the One that helps us to be branches attached to the Vine
(Jesus Christ) and look like Him.
Lastly, the Holy Spirit is a covering as a form of protection from intruders (like the role of the
mother hen):
● In scientific experiments, lids are used to cover a chemical reaction taking place in a
beaker to avoid contamination with anything in the air. This is similar to how the Holy
Spirit is the seal of our salvation - Ephesians 1:13 - In him you also, when you heard the
word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the
promised Holy Spirit,
● This clearly shows us that the Holy Spirit’s role is to help preserve the work of holiness
that Jesus Christ started through his death on the cross
