Introduction:
Financial shortage is defined as deficiency or scarcity of money due to unemployment, inflation rate,
etc,. A lot of people are struggling with this kind of problem, but the researcher will be focusing this study
on the Academic Performance of the students. This research titled, Financial Shortage about Academic
Performance of Grade 10 Luciano Students, was chosen to be conducted by the researchers to know or
identify if financial shortage about students' academic performance. Financial shortage can affect the mental
and physical health of a student. According to Holiday Wynes, (2014), a student's financial position will
affect their commitment to learning which will affect their academic performance. Meanwhile, through
financial shortage some students weren’t able to pursue studies and it causes a large amount of drop out in
some schools. According to Education Data org. 38% of student dropouts are because of a lack of financial
assistance. Financial deals an important role in the academic performance of students. This is a serious issue
that is needed to be solved or addressed, so it could prevent multiple stages of problems, especially in their
academic performance. However, most students have to struggle to make ends meet as they come from
unprivileged families. Students are having difficulties or a hard time in doing decisions about whether to
spend money for food or other essential needs; and other have to go through health issues that took toll on
their financial situations (Perman, 2019).
Nowadays, a lot of researchers are being able to make study about financial shortage in our community,
but then some of those studies are still lack of solutions or answers. Thus, the researchers of this study was
encouraged to look for and give an another point of view of the same topic. Currently, this particular
problem or topic is very common in our society or in our country, as of today, the citizens in our country are
experiencing inflation rate or the increase prices of goods or products. Meanwhile, the respondents of this
research could be also affected or experiencing financial shortage, and the researchers were about to identify
the effects of this particular problem to the students, and also to identify how the respondents overcome
financial shortage upon their academic performance. Some financial shortage are due to lack of knowledge
on how to manage money for expenditures. On the other hand, some families are not aware of knowing or
identifying financial priorities, in that case students of families are suffering from financial shortage and it
affect their studies or academic performance. According to Dang and Aballus, (2015) education is a high-
cost social service, therefore insufficient financial support will be a problem for students to enhance
themselves in academics that leads to poor academic performance.
“Poverty must not be a bar to learning, and learning must be an escape from poverty”. These phrase
was spoken by President Lyndon B. Johnson in his “Great Society” speech of 1964 (Johnson, 1963–64).
Nowadays, poverty is prevalent especially in the Philippines, and students are one of the most affected by
this. Some of them weren’t able to continue school due to financial stability or financial shortage. But the
words that was been said by President Lyndon, people should critically think about it, that poverty must not
be a hindrance from learning. And government must focus to poor families through giving them chance to
learn in school. Furthermore, due to inflation and trade war, it had made most of country facing recession
and increases the cases of students facing financial shortage. Though there is no tuition for every students
studying in public high schools, there are still incidental expenses, such as projects and some obligatory
contribution to the school. Even the foods and clothing for the family is a big burden to students came from
poor families. Therefore, the researchers had come up to conduct this particular research problem, to identify
and know if financial shortage do really affect the students academic performance.

Foreign Literature
Norzalan Sarina Yusuf and Fatima Mohamed Hamoud Al-Majdhoub (2020), Financial problems are a vital issue for
everyone, especially students. Most students have to struggle to make ends meet as they come from underprivileged
families. Thus students have to make difficult decisions whether to spend money on food or other essential needs; and
others have to go through health issues that took a toll on their financial situations (Perman, 2019). With the lack of
financial, hence students faced financial problems to adapt to the high cost of living. Financial is a severe issue that
lingers among university students and might affect their academic performance. They also added, financial problems
lead to various problems that will eventually affect the students academic performance. Another way financial
problems could affect the students' academic performance is stated by Widener (2017), in order to overcome the
financial problems, most students make a decision of having to work part-time and even working for a long horse,
which takes away their time focusing on their academics. Hence, having a part-time job leads to a lack of studying,
taking less credit hours and also poor attendance resulting in their poor academic performance. This can be supported
by a study from Widener (2017). It found that students who are financially depressed had lower grades and enrolled in
fewer credit hours. Most students are involved in part-time jobs given by universities or local companies.
Asri et al. (2017), the students who come from underprivileged socioeconomic status families are often
constrained by problems such as needing to work to help their families, incapable of buying learning materials that
will ultimately impact their academic performance. According to Perman (2019), CNBC journalist, stated that having
a part-time job during the study takes a greater impact on low-income students, whereby approximately 6 million
students took a part-time job, and most of them are women, Blacks and Latinos. By juggling between jobs and
academics, some students have to struggle to overcome and manage their financial problems.
Aidan Kang (2022), Several studies prove that financial problems affect the cognitive abilities of college students
and likely lead to poor academic performances. Students who don’t have to worry about money tend to perform better
and are more likely to finish their studies, while those with financial stress perform poorly and drop out of school.
This is why it’s become a necessity for colleges to hold financial literacy classes for their students. A study of student
financial wellness at Ohio State University found that over 70% of students have financial stress because they’re
scared of not meeting their tuition costs and monthly expenses. It becomes more of a problem considering that many
college students lack food and accommodation security students are struggling financially. Also, it’s worth mentioning
too that many universities and colleges are struggling financially because of a decline in enrollment and operational
deficits. This is mostly because most students are struggling financially.
Local literature
Pedrosa. Dachs, Maia, Andrade and Carvalho (2006), were able to find out that students coming from
disadvantaged backgrounds, (educational and socioeconomic) have a higher relative performance than their
counterparts. This can be considered a phenomenon that the authors named "educational resilience”.
Due to a lack of resources, many students struggle to reach the same academic achievement levels as
students not living in poverty. Meanwhile, academic performance is more focused on the scores and
percentage of marks which are not indicative of the actual and real-life abilities or potentials of a certain
student (Delano-Qriaran. 2016).
Esguerra et Al (2019), there are 8 factors that affect the student's academic performance, and one of it the
family income. It also stated that the parents that have higher income, are more likely for the students to
show good performance in studies. Furthermore, Only 18 percent of Filipinos considered themselves as
"triumphant" financially (Diola, 2015) And in that case, daily survival where such circumstances occur,
people tend to stop studying and just work for daily living. They don't matter about degree anymore, as long
as to overcome poverty (Salma, 2016)
Cardaña. Delequiña, Atabay. Goloron and Catbag's (2018-2019) research findings, Financial Shortage is
considered as one of the common problems faced by the majority of students, that affect their Academic
Performance. Researchers had recommended students to save money. through putting it in savings account,
and or managing their daily expenses, this strategy can help students future.
Financial Situation in the Philippines According to figures from the National Statistics Office of the Philippines,
unemployment stands at 7.6%, and underemployment at 19.8% (July 2009 figures). These figures do not tell the full
story. The definition of employment includes 10.5% of workers as? Unpaid family workers? And many jobs provide a
salary that is barely enough to survive on (National Statistics Office). The 2006 poverty incidence rate for the
Philippines is 32.9% of the population (National Statistical Coordination Board). The Philippines is falling behind its
regional neighbors of Malaysia, Vietnam, Korea and Indonesia when it comes to economic growth. While the other
nations are moving forward as Newly Industrialized Countries, the Philippines has a population growth approximately
2% per annum, meaning the number of poor could rapidly increase (CIA World Fact book). Another problem is the
unequal distribution of wealth in the Philippines. A small number of rich families living in the major cities control the
majority of the wealth, while people in rural areas are getting poorer. In 2006, the richest 10% of families earned more
than the poorest 70% of families combined (National Statistics Office, 2003 and 2006 Family Income and Expenditure
Survey, Final Results). Even more telling is the fact that the ten richest families earned as much as the poorest nine
million families, making up half the Filipino population.
